Chapter 11: Safe Guard

“Yes?” Veronika leaned in closer like she was afraid to miss a word.

“I’m not sure,” Lucy finally blurted out. Veronika cocked her head in confusion.

“What? How can you not be sure? You either like someone or you don’t,” Veronika replied. She sounded frustrated. Lucy sighed. She had never been a very good liar, and she was even worse at trying to be evasive.

“Okay, I do like someone, but you have to promise that you won’t tell anyone anything at all! I’m not sure this is… okay,” Lucy admitted.

Veronika propped herself more firmly up on her elbows and listened intently. “I promise, Lucy.”

Lucy could feel her nerves race and the tension building.

“I think I am really falling for Celeste.”

Veronika’s eyes widened, and she sat back with an unreadable expression. She was silent long enough to cause Lucy to panic momentarily.
