Eseranka smirked. "That assessment would be correct. Lord Osric got most of his wealth from trade and collecting. At that time, the Bearer Culture hadn't really taken over the Continent as much, so he was able to amass a reasonable amount of money within a short amount of time."

The ascendor came to a smooth stop, and the doors slid open with a soft chime. Eseranka stepped out, followed by Spheris and Lirael.

This corridor was a bit different — more polished, more prestigious. The walls were decorated with melburn and the same marble stones on the ground. Soft, ambient lighting gave a warmer glow, illuminating the polished floors that reflected their steps.

The floor looked more important, there were fewer doors and windows, and fewer student Bearers passing by.
