Pierce and Data sat across from the Chief in a dim-lit room, sitting before a pale desk made of quartz.
"I told you. Data and I weren't there. Cam wanted to know why you wanted us to come with you, he ran off, Sophie said that we should go back to the town hall or whatever you call this building, so we did," Pierce repeated for the fifth time.
It had been an hour since the cyclops left the town of Stonewalk and the fire-lit boulder had almost killed Cameron. Since it occurred, the Chief, The Major and the rest of the upper soldiers had begun interviews with citizens who had witnessed it or even heard of it, wanting to get the whole information before sending in the account to the High House on Light Beam Island.
The Chief looked at the two boys sitting across from him. "You both were here, at the Hall?" he clarified.
Pierce and Data both nodded their heads, confirming.
The Chief gave a nod and moved back in the chair. "You both can go. A maid will show you to the parlour," he told the two of them, watching them both stand from the chairs and leave the room. "Where are Cameron and Sophie?" The Chief asked Major Morgenstern.
"They're in your office, Sir. I left them with a first aid kit for Cameron's scratch he received when the boulder nearly hit him. Turns out the boulder may not have hit him but the spear he was holding did," the Major explained to the Chief.
The Chief stood from the chair, walking to lean his hands against the edge of the window, gazing outside to his town. "How long has our kind been praying for 'the one' to come to us, Phillip?" he questioned the Major.
"Since the wizards left, sir," Major Morgenstern replied.
"I remember my father telling me about them. He knew them, worked alongside them, leading them to destroy the monsters," Chief Stonewalker said. "He never would explain what happened. All he said was that they had, like the other species, parted, leaving us to defend ourselves."
The Major blinked, confused at what the Chief was telling him. "Did he never explain? Not even once about why they left and disappeared?" he questioned the Chief, curious to hear the older man's answer.
"He didn't. No one who knew them would explain. It almost looked like they didn't know themselves."
The Major lowered his head, nodding slowly at the Chief's words.
The Chief made his way from the window and past the Major, leading the way to the door of the room. "Time for us to ask the boy and girl," he said, opening the door of the room and walking out with the Major close behind.
Back in the Chief's office, Sophie held Cam's chin, using her other hand to slowly clean the cut above his eyebrow. She was using a cotton swab, lightly swiping the alcohol-drenched swob back and forth.
"This is like deja vu," Cam hissed, the pain of the alcohol in his fresh-cut making him wince. "I feel like we're back home in the treehouse after one of my dad's more drunken outbursts," Cam said with a smile and a wince.
Sophie smiled at Cam, a little laugh leaving her lips. "Only difference is I also don't need to send Pierce and Data out to get you ice packs for your bruises," she joked, making the boy laugh.
"And your uncle isn't threatening to go to my dad with his shotgun."
Both Sophie and Cameron began to laugh from the memories, but it stopped when Sophie had to wipe her tearing eyes.
"Do you miss it?" she questioned Cameron quietly.
Cam jumped off the Chief's desk where he had been sitting, coming to stand alongside Sophie.
"Honestly... This world is what you, Pierce, Data and myself have been dreaming of since we met each other. Since we started our version of the 'Scooby Gang'. For some reason, I feel... ecstatic!" Cam said with a broad smile on his lips.
"Maybe this is what we have dreamed of, but something also isn't right, Cam. The cyclops, Trianon, sounded panicked. She was trying to warn me to go, to get away from the square. The monsters that they've been describing wouldn't do that-" Sophie said only to stop when the sound of the door opening echoed throughout the study. Both of them turned around to see the Major and Chief entering the study, giving the two of them a smile. "Sophie, if you could go with Major Morgenstern for your interview please," The Chief said kindly to her.
Sophie exchanged a look with Cam. "Be careful," she whispered to him before she nodded her head at the Chief and left the study with the Major.
Cam turned to the Chief, a nervous look in his eyes as the Chief smiled at him before he locked the study doors.
"Cam, you and I have a lot to talk about," he says as he watches Cam gulp.
Down the hall, Sophie walked alongside the Major, letting him lead her to the interview room.
She decided in her mind to take the time to look around the Hall; The Hall was a building that seemed to serve as both a town hall and a courthouse to the Paladins. It was a building on the outside that resembled a gothic theme, while inside it felt more like an Edwardian feel. There was red carpet going throughout the middle of each hallway and staircase. The walls and every door were of rich wood. And the very floor beneath the carpet was a richly looking stone.
Finally, the Major stopped his march in front of a door. He used his hand to turn the knob and once pushed it open he gestured for Sophie to go inside first. She took a careful step inside the room, looking around in all directions to make sure it was safe before she made her way to sit at the quartz table. The Major closed the door behind him, making sure to lock it. He made his way to sit in front of Sophie at the table, holding a charcoal pencil in his hand and beneath it was a notepad.
"I'm just going to ask you a few questions about Sophie about what happened outside," he said to her, explaining how this was going to go. "You'll tell me what you can remember, and I'll ask a total of five questions about your statement and then you can go meet your friends down in the parlour."
The Major watched as Sophie nodded her head in understanding, giving her a pleased smile.
"All right, then. Sophie, please begin with when you first spotted the cyclops," Major Morgenstern said, watching her closely.
Sophie went to speak but stopped.
"Sophie..."
