The doomsday conspiracy

Robert Bellamy, an agent of the ONI receives a mission on behalf of NSA: to locate the witnesses of the crash of an experimental meteorological balloon in Switzerland, for which he is only given the date, the place where it happened, and the fact that the witnesses were passengers of a bus tour. He is given an unlimited budget but is told he must work strictly under cover. After he finds the first witness, he discovers that the meteorological balloon was actually an alien spaceship. He tracks the witnesses one by one and reports their names to NSA. Without his knowledge, the names of the witnesses are then communicated to the intelligence organizations of their respective countries, and each of them is assassinated shortly after. These actions are coordinated under the name "Operation Doomsday", under the leadership of a figure known only as Janus. Robert's personal history is shown through flashbacks: he rose in the military ranks under the mentorship of Admiral Ralph Whittaker, and during a combat flight in Vietnam his plane was taken down, with Whittaker son's dying in the crash and Robert being badly injured. Doctors declare that he has no chance of survival, but a nurse named Susan convinces them to operate on him and encourages him to keep his fighting spirit. He and Susan fall in love after his recovery and marry. Robert is then recruited to become a spy for ONI, but this job takes over his personal life until Susan divorces him and marries a business tycoon named Monte Banks, while Robert isolates himself and dedicates even more to his work. In a conversation with the last witness, he mentions to Robert an additional one, a woman whom he hadn't seen in the bus. When Robert tries to contact the other bus passengers to corroborate this information, he finds out that all of them are dead. He deduces that this is an international effort since they died in different countries, and he also concludes that the final step of the operation would be his own death to eliminate all knowledge about the alien ship. He then goes into hiding right as Janus sends an instruction to kill him. Robert goes for help to Li, one of his friends who lives in Paris. Li explains to him about Operation Doomsday, revealing that aliens have been in communication with the governments of Earth for a while, demanding a stop of industrial pollution to save the Earth's environment, before revealing that he is a member of the operation and shooting Robert. Robert wins the fight and kills him, but he is badly wounded and realizes that he will eventually be killed unless he negotiates. The mysterious last witness is revealed to be an alien that survived the crash of the spaceship and disguised herself as a woman. She contacts Robert through a piece of the spaceship that he got from one of the witnesses, and they arrange to meet back in Switzerland where the ship crashed. Robert also calls NSA and asks to meet Janus there. In the final confrontation, Janus is revealed to be Admiral Whittaker, Robert's mentor. He also confesses that he sabotaged Robert's marriage to keep him at ONI, and eventually decided to have him killed for not being committed enough to his job. Monte Banks is revealed to be part of the Doomsday conspiracy, as he owns many industries that would lose money if they weren't able to pollute. Both are abducted by the aliens, who task Robert with the mission of spreading environmental awareness on Earth.

There is a lot to be said about this novel. The story is incredibly good, it is somehow humorous despite having a very dark and gruesome tone and plot. The main character is very strange, somehow not having an exact personality other than detached. He is occasionally generous and kind, and at others incredibly cold-hearted and cruel. The author is an incredible writer. The novel is written beautifully and quite intelligently. The only words I have to say are excellent and ingenious.

I've been reading free stuff on Webnovel for a couple of months now, but never thought to make an account until I read this. I had to review it. I came upon this totally by random and it quickly went from "okay this is kinda neat" to "why can't I stop reading, do I hate myself?" Anyways I guess I should start with the basic premise. To sum it up this story is told in the first person by what is, as far as I can tell, basically an immortal wizard/druid raised by coyotes. He's done something horrible (possibly destroyed the world?) and the whole book is a collection of short stories talking about his past, who he is and why he thinks the way he does. Doesn't sound too unique on paper, I get it, you see these kinds of books a dime a dozen here. But what sets it apart is...well, this isn't really about the fantasy. The protagonist views the world and himself through a jaded lens and the story really reflects that, emphasizes it even. And the writing is probably better than like 90% of the stuff I've seen on this website. The author makes great use of metaphor and analogy to make the MCs thoughts and feelings, while sometimes barbaric and outlandish, highlight how scummy people and life can be. After the first two chapters your basically thrown into a series of mostly unrelated, self-contained stories featuring a new cast of characters that help to serve develop the MCs philosophy. And even though you don't really see these characters outside their story (aside from the protagonist) the time spent with them really makes them feel real...which is all the more tragic, mostly, and leads me to my next point. The story is dark. If the book cover wasn't obvious enough, things get real twisted real fast. Most of the chapters end horribly, but in a good way. It works to build on the tragedy of the writing and get the themes and messages across, but very rarely do things end well in this book. This also kinda helps to make the protag feel more grounded. You get the sense that he's this borderline god-like being, but in reality he displays a sense of fear and powerlessness as he contemplates the mistakes he's made and people he's lost. I know I'm not really doing a good job selling this but...I just gotta say it's very unique. I'd call it fantasy-meets-philosophy in the best possible way. Each chapter made me think a little bit more about myself and what it means to be human. For example, my favorite (that's been uploaded so far) chapter "The Miss" made me think about "what does mercy REALLY mean?" All in all, what I can say is the writing is really good and the story is by far one of the more unique ones I've read online. If you're looking for something totally different from your typical fantasy novel, give this a spin. I'm pretty excited to see where this one goes and how it all ties into the overarching narrative. Pros: -Great writing quality -Unique, if hard to understand, protagonist -Thought provoking stories -Great use of vocabulary Cons: -Subject matter gets very mature (Not necessarily a con, but some of the events in the story even made ME feel uncomfortable) -Difficult to understand beginning -Chapters can be fairly long

It might have slow updates but this novel can be considered a hidden gem in some ways. I was just browsing through novels when I discovered this and I really like it. This novel has really good writing and more importantly a very interesting plot (at least for me). The basic idea which the author is trying to convey is what caught my eye as it reminded me of my own work. But the writing, atmosphere and concept is all completely different. And it's brilliant. "A fantasy novel that explores the true ugliness of humans while also setting a beautiful plot" that is how I'd summarize this novel. Please give it a try. The chapters might be long but it's very nice. Personally I loved it and will try to keep up with updates! (Since the author is new on Webnovel, as a fellow author I've left a few suggestions for them, hope they'll consider some of them!)
