Chapter 16: Nazis Closing In

It took longer to get the location of the female spy from the monks at the monastery than Lieutenant Herman Schmidt had expected. Perhaps some of that had been his fault. He would admit that. The Nazis were always coming up with new tortuous ways of getting people to talk. It took him a while to decide on which of these new methods to employ.

In the end, he decided to mix water with electricity. They fought it for a while, but eventually one of the monks talked. He learned that the woman and her two friends had been taken away in a cart.

His young victim, hanging by his hands with electricity being applied to his body, also revealed that the younger man had been shot. The other had been a terribly old man, so he suspected the one that had been shot was Volker.
