The muddy road was progressively getting worse. More than once, they’d gone into a low spot and Erika had to gun the motor to keep from getting stuck. If she drove too slowly, they would bog down, but if she drove too fast, they risked a crash. Keeping the truck between the trees that lined each side of the lane was becoming next to impossible.
They came to a dip in the road, and she had to stand on the accelerator before the truck finally grabbed enough traction to get out of the muck. It shot forward just as Remy Dubois cried out.
Erika’s first thought was that he spotted Germans that were about to open fire on them.
She looked away from the road to find that he was pointing and what he was pointing at was even more of a shock to her system than if they had come across a German patrol.
“Do you see it?” Remy asked.
The old man could barely contain his excitement. “A wolf. Another wolf! I’ve not seen one around here and now two in as many days!”
