"A child screamed, waking up the entire village." He picked up the piece of cloth and the frayed ribbon dangling from the bush. "Although every home had sharpened weapons, seeing swords pressed against their children's necks, no adult dared to use their own blades. Instead, they watched as the soldiers of Eversun poured oil onto their homes."
"They didn't try to fight back at all?"
"A few had tried at first, but for every person that attempted to fight back, a child's head rolled onto the floor. This used to be a tightly-knit village, and seeing the blood of any child was like witnessing that of their own. The soldiers had promised that no other child needed to die that night if all the adults obeyed their commands."
"So they stood still as the torches were lit, taking desperate last glances at their children across a wall of blazing fire." Daphne finished the tale for him, her heart sinking as she anticipated what happened next.
