The Cons

One hundred years after superpowers have become commonplace, generations have seemingly adopted and lived in a chaotic superhuman society run by heroes and villains. In said society, countless heroes strive to climb to rise to old legends, but this isn't their story. Instead, we are here to shine a light on the literal worst of the worst, a team of criminals, outcasts, and misfits that struggle to survive in this mad world. After all, when you're already at the bottom, it makes sense to focus only on The Cons.

Into the Fire Part 1

My parents have always told me that the best way to get ahead is to have a cool one. After all, you can't get anything done if you're freaking out all over the place, right? This is why when I woke up, I didn't feel any fear. Instead, all I did feel was a terrible, resounding headache that left my vision blurry.

It took a few minutes, but when the blurring finally ended, I found myself in the center of a dark, dank, unfamiliar room that would probably be creepy to most people. Once the headache subsided, my body got met with a whole new sensation. Biting cold attacked my brittle bones as soon enough; my teeth were chattering faster than a heartbeat. I tried getting out of the chair I was on, but I quickly found myself zip-tied to it.

"Looks like you're all prepped and ready now," a mysterious voice said from the shadows.

At that moment, darkness started to take form as if they were moving with a mind of their own. It took me a second to realize that these shadows were a man that soon grew a more distinct shape. He was a bit of a strongman, easily six feet tall with a bulky frame to match.

However, I couldn't get a good look at him, for he got clad in complete gray camo, with dark tinted goggles, a white mask, and hood to match. However, the most concerning thing he had was that same "d" badge as Taurus, with this one, in particular, having a bronze color scheme. Overall the guy gave off a serious and grim vibe, but still, it was rude to assume the worst based on appearances.

"Hello, my name is Fury; what's yours?"

"My name doesn't matter, same for yours. The only thing we need to know is the where," the man said in a colder tone than the very room.

Realizing what he meant, my anxiety started to bubble like a stew. But before I could even get the pot boiling, I focused my energy somewhere else, mainly my breathing. Slow and steady wins the race, right? So once I calmed down, I decided to come clean with the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

"I would like to tell you that information, mister; honestly, I don't like to steal, but if I do, I don't think you're going to treat us very well, and I don't want to upset the others either. Maybe if we all talk, we can do some kind of negotat-."

"You don't understand, girl; it doesn't matter if you didn't want to do it; you did it, so at least do us all a favor and accept the consequences because I know I will," he said as he revealed a small arsenal of blades, batons, tasers, and bombs.

My breathing automatically grew all the more rapid at sight. I swear I could feel "it" starting to come into view. But I still kept going with the bargaining. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, right? I mean, if the quote came from a guy named Zen, it can't be untrue, right?

"Please, sir, you don't want to do this; I'm begging you," I said fearfully.

"You can't beg now, girl, you reap what you sow, you steal from our kind, then you'll have to bear his fangs," he said as he struck me with the stun baton!"

And as I felt the volts rampage across my body, I shed tears. Not from the pain but from the sadness of what I was about to do. Because in this society filled with superpowers and superhumans, my power fated me to have a fury unending, reluctantly siding me with the worst of the worst. The Cons want the same thing as I, a haven where we never have to hurt anyone again. But, unfortunately, this won't be one of those days.

All at once, my body surged with unfathomable power, forcing itself to grow twice its size while arming itself with long black claws and primal fangs. With all my will, I tried to hold back the tidal wave of emotion, hoping this time I can save someone, but in the end, I failed like all the other times because I can't even save myself.
