And that right there was his overwhelming fear. That he would never find someone willing to look past it, and he’d get stuck in this constant cycle of telling people and getting dumped, telling people and getting dumped, and always hoping the next one would be different. And he was terrified that Jude was just the beginning of that cycle.

“Some relationships won’t be,” Aunt Kerry admitted quietly, “but most are worth the bad bits because you get so many good things out of them, too. Look at Maggie and your dad. She doesn’t regret that relationship for a moment, because she got you. And no matter how much of an idiot your father turned out to be, your mum wouldn’t have had you without him. Natasha or Anton.”

Anton swallowed hard, and ground the heel of his hand against his eye. He’d told Ellen once that he’d lucked out and failed hard at the same time. His dad royally fucking sucked, but Mum and Aunt Kerry were like the jackpot.
