Episode 28

That evening, Dan called Florence and asked her if her mother Mrs. Rose Ogola was at home. He wanted to meet with her to tell her that he was in love with her daughter and he was willing to marry her if she would give her the chance. They went with Joel to Florence's home to see her mother. When they arrived, she welcomed them and game them some tea. Then Dan started talking to her.

"Mother, I am sorry for visiting you at this time of the day but I knew it would be difficult to find you at home early in the day. I have come to confess something to you and to ask you for another thing in return. Your daughter and I have been seeing each other for a while now and we have developed some unexplainable feelings for each other. I am deeply in love with your daughter and she told me she is in love with me too though I can't be sure about that. I know this is a lot to request but I am begging you to let me take your daughter away from you as my wife. She is the woman of my life and I would wish to live with her for the rest of my life, be it in sorrow or in happiness." Dan said to Florence's mother."My son, I don't know where all this is coming from but I saw it coming, I saw how you were looking at my daughter the last time you were here and I even told her that you were in love with her. What you have done today is something even my husband didn't do, most men marry their wives without seeking permission and blessing from their parents. I am proud of you for that. But my daughter still has her own dreams to achieve, she has to go back to school and be someone like you. In this world of today a woman without something of her own is regarded useless in marriages and I can't let my daughter face that in her life. She has to go to college. I am not saying you can't marry her, that is a decision only her, should make but I only want the best for her. I don't want her to be like me. I think you are a good man and you are free to take my daughter if she allows you to do that, I can't make that decision for any of you, but just make sure she becomes a better woman in the future." Mrs. Rose Ogola allowed Dan to marry her daughter. Dan thanked Mrs. Rose and promised her that he would take good care of her and do everything he could to make sure Florence gets a better life and be a respected woman in the near future. They then drove back home.

The following day, Dan was to take Florence to his father in the hospital, he woke up in the morning then made a phone call to her and asked her to prepare herself. At around 10 in the morning, they left home with Joel. They picked Florence in Ndori town then proceeded to Aga Khan hospital in Kisumu where his father was receiving treatment. When they arrived, Joel remained in the car while Dan and Florence got into the hospital and went straight to the executive ward on the second floor where his father was admitted.

They got in and found his father being attended by a doctor so they waited outside seated on an executive two-seater couch which was near the door. The doctor finished up and left and as soon as he left the room then they got in. "Hello Dad, how are you doing today?" Dan greeted him."I am fine son, who is this beautiful woman?" His Dad asked. "Dad, this is Florence, my girlfriend, Florence, meet my Dad, Prof. Ojwang, it's too bad you are meeting him in a hospital." Dan introduced the two. "Pleasure meeting you sir, it's an honor, Dan has been talking a lot about you. I now see why." Florence said, although she lied because Dan never talks about his family, maybe he just wanted Prof. Ojwang to feel better. "Pleasure to finally meet you too my daughter, so you are the woman who made my son run out of a wedding he planned leaving other people in tears? Hehehehe, I think I can now understand why." Prof. Ojwang was a very funny old man. "Now Dad, this the woman I was talking about, you told me to go think about it and decide on what to do and I did that, and now this is the decision I have made, I want to be with her, Dad. She is the woman who makes me happy and she means the world to me. I have not proposed to her yet and I am about to do that just now. If she accepts then I would like you to give us your blessings." Dan took a drinking straw, folded it over into a small rounded ring-like shape then knelt in front of Florence, he looked up at her eyes. "Florence Nduta, will you marry me?" Dan asked her holding the folded straw in his hands.

Florence started blushing, trying to hide her eyes using her hands, then she gathered the courage and replied. "Yes, my answer is yes." She replied. Dan put the folded drinking straw on her fourth finger of the left hand as a symbol of engagement. The folded straw was even wider than Florence's finger. After giving her the 'engagement ring' they moved close

to the bed where his father was and knelt down, Prof.Joel touched both of their heads and prayed to God to give then a happy life. That was the begging of their new journey of life. After receiving the blessing from their father, they left and strolled around town until five in the evening, then they left for home. Dan left Florence at Ndori town and continued with their journey back home.

At around 7.30 pm, Dan received a phone call from a new number. It was Mrs. Rose Ogola, Florence's mother. Florence had not reached home and her mother was worried but that was strange. Her number was not going through, so she decided to call Dan to confirm if he was still with her. Dan told her that they dropped her off in town at around a quarter to seven just the way he used to do it on other days. Florence could not be found, and her phone was unreachable too. Nobody knew where she was, but maybe someone knew. Dan was so stressed. Even if it was a matter of looking for her, he had no idea where he could start his search from. Dan had a high school friend who was working in an IT firm and an anonymous hacker by the name Benadinea Kapkoyo. Kapkoyo is a computer guru who would truck and access a victim's phone from anywhere even if it's offline provided its battery is connected. He called Kapkoyo and asked her if she could help him truck the phone. Florence's phone had an inbuilt phone battery so there was no way someone would remove it if in any case she was kidnapped.

Kapkoyo accepted to help and told him to send the phone number or IMEI of the phone if he could get one. Dan called Mrs. Rose back and he asked her to read for him the phone IMEI number which was written on the box it came with. Dan sent to Kapkoyo both the phone number and the IMEI, within five minutes Kapkoyo sent him the location of the phone through google map. Dan couldn't believe the coordinates of the location Kapkoyo sent to him, it was his grandfather's old warehouse which was just some meters away from their home. The warehouse was not operational and only his parents had the keys to it.

Dan ran to their Servant quarters and explained to Joel what was going on. His mother was not at home at that time. He took Joel and Tony to accompany him to the warehouse since he also feared for his life. When they arrived they found the warehouse closed and they could not get in. But the signal was even closer. He decided to call his father to ask him for the keys because breaking the steel doors was something which was next to impossible, if not madness. They went to the back door and opened it slowly because they didn't want the person(s) inside to get distracted with anything.

Dan was having a gun in his hands, he surprised everyone because no one has ever seen him with a gun, not even Joel or his sister Lisa. "Dan, what is that in your hand? You mean you have a gun? For how long have you been keeping this from me?" Lisa asked him. "Sshhh…. Shut up, we will talk about this later." Dan replied. They got in and moved slowly without anyone noticing. When they reached the center of the room, they found three people, two of them were standing talking to each other. Chris and Mrs. Mary, Dan's mother were standing while Florence was tied on a chair, she was having some minor injuries on her head. "Mum, what are you doing?" Dan shouted. Mrs. Mary was shocked, she didn't know how the four got inside the room, she also had no idea how they knew she was holding Florence inside there. She was also holding a gun on her hand. "Son,..., Lisa, how did you get inside here? How did you even find me?" She asked back. "Mum what are you doing here with a gun? Why is that lady tied on a chair?" Lisa asked her mother.

"My daughter, this is the lady who destroyed our son, she is the lady who destroyed our relationship with Rev. Ngesa's family, she destroyed everything I worked so hard to acquire and now, she has to pay for all of it." Mrs. Mary said, pointed the gun at Florence. "Mother, the lady you are talking about, her name is Florence, and she is the love of my life. She didn't do anything wrong, she didn't destroy our wedding with Sarah, I did, I was the one who ran out of the church that day, so I am begging you to let Florence go, if somebody has to pay for what happened on that day, then it has to be me, Florence has nothing to do with this. So please stop pointing that gun at her, point it at me." Dan said to his mother."She is the cause of everything, you would have married Sarah, but because of her that didn't happen, you chose her over Sarah. She must just die today." Mrs. Mary cocked her gun.

Florence was now crying, no one apart from Dan was able to help her at that time. Dan had to choose between his mother and his girlfriend. That was the hardest decision but he had to make it and make it faster."Mum stoop!!!" Dan shouted at her mother, pointing a gun at her."Son, are you pointing a gun at me? Then shoot me, shoot me now." Mrs. Mary shouted back."Mum don't make me do this please, I love you mother, please don't make me do this to you." Dan cocked his gun. "Shoot me, son, let's see if you will shoot your ownmother because of this pig. Shoot me right now." Dan could not shoot his mother, he didn't have that courage to do it."Mrs. Mary shot Florence in the chest then ran outside. Chris followed her, they got into their car then drove away at super speed. Dan couldn't run after them leaving Florence to die. She was bleeding badly. Joel ran back home to bring the car. They had to rush with her to the hospital before she bled to death, they couldn't take her to the nearby hospital because of her status, they had to rush her to Kisumu for emergency surgery. They tried everything but they could not stop the bleeding, Florence lost consciousness on their way because she had lost too much blood. They took her to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu. Nurses at the hospital took her and rushed her to the OR (Operating Room) for an emergency operation. The surgeon arrived with a team of residents to do the emergency operation. The surgeon who arrived was Sarah. The woman whom Dan refused to marry…
