Chapter 46: Coal Digger (Part 4)

Jay - "So, are you joining us here?"

Cameron - "Yeah, Jay, you know what he has been studying."

Mitchell - "Yeah, I gotta tell you, I am a little worried about C.J. Hightower, right with a bad ankle. I wonder how he is going to run his corner routes."

Ryan - "Too bad you won't get to see it today as Hightower's out."

Mitchell - "What."

Jay - "Yeah, he is out injured."

Mitchell - "Then who will run the corner routes?"

Ryan - "I will tell you who won't be Billings."

Jay and Cameron start to laugh while Alex makes a polite smile.

Cameron - "That's low."

Cameron continues seeing Mitchell not getting the joke, "You see, he is in jail."

Jay - "Wow, Ryan, you are on fire. I was just about to say that."

Ryan, on the inside, "'cause I stole your joke."

A play starts taking place in the game.

Cameron - "Double tight end, it's gonna be a quarterback roll-out to the left."

Jay interrupts, "No, they are going to run it."

Ryan - "No, he is correct. He's got the slot. In the end zone! And that's a Touchdown!"

Jay - "Awwah."

Mitchell claps, saying, "You know, maybe they should have considered blitzing."

Jay - "Blitzing wouldn't have helped them. Get outta here."

Mitchell gets frustrated and leaves.

Cameron - "Oh ghosh blitzing hahehe."

Commentary starts -

Mitchell and Cameron are seen sitting on their couch.

Mitchell - "So, my interest in football concluded as shortly

and dramatically as the climax of the west side story."

"If you didn't guess yet, I am a musical theater fan."

Cameron waves his hands and says, "Suprise."

Mitchell looks at Cameron, and V Cameron looks away.

Commentary end

We are taken back to the kitchen, where Gloria is confronting Claire.

Gloria - "Okay, the truth sometimes feel like you don't like me."

Phil - "Wow, powerful, powerful stuff. Claire? Tell us

how that makes you feel."

Claire looks straight at Phil and says, "Right now, I feel a lot of anger."

Phil backs out and says, "No, don't tell me. Tell her."

Claire looks at Gloria and says, "Gloria, right now, I am angry at Phil."

Phil - "Come on, let's respect the process."

Claire - "Gloria, I don't know why you think I don't like you."

Gloria - "It's just that sometimes when you see me, you make that face."

Claire - "What face?"

Gloria - "Like this."

Gloria looks up, closes her lips, and looks like she can't be bothered anymore. It looks like an elitist looking down on the poor as they can't be bothered. (I will insert an image)

Claire - "I do not make a face like that."

Mitchell walks in and says, "Oh my god, that is so Claire."

Claire - "Mitchell!."

Phil standing in a corner, spoke, "She does that with everyone. It's just her face."

Claire looks back at Phil, shutting him up.

Gloria - "From the beginning, I feel like Manny and I are not welcome in this family."

Claire - "That's crazy."

Gloria - "No, it's not so crazy. It's how I feel."

Mitchell grabs a plate full of food and awkwardly exits the kitchen.

Claire sighs and speaks, "I am sorry. If you feel that way."

"I really am because I have tried everything to make you feel comfortable with us since the moment I met you."

Gloria - "You think it's all in my head?"

Claire - "No. Kind- I don't know, but I have to say, we really love

having you and Manny be a part of our family."

Gloria - "Really?"

Claire - "Really, so don't be so defensive."

Gloria - "I do that, don't I?"

Everyone starts chuckling.

Phil walks over with his arms open, "I am feeling a hug."

Claire and Gloria then hug it out.

Phil - "I was thinking group hug, but this is fine."

Haley suddenly passes by while on her phone, "I did be there if I could. Oh, my God. They are hugging."

Claire leaves the hug and says, "Haley get off the phone."

Mitchell, in the background, is seen pouring a drink from his glass.

Cameron, Jay, and Ryan come from behind to confront him.

Cameron - "Where did you go?"

Mitchell - "You heard him. He said, Get outta here."

Jay - "Oh, my God. You're such a girl."

Ryan - "Come on, Mitchell, it was just a small comment. He didn't mean it right, Jay."

Jay - "Of course not."

Mitchell - "Look, dad, I was coming to get a beer anyways. By the way, nice apology."

Jay - "Nice beer."

Cameron and Mitchell then take a seat at the kitchen counter. While Jay goes to grab a plate. While Ryan is left standing alone, pouring himself Fanta into a plastic glass.

Alex soon comes into the kitchen, stands next to Ryan, and asks him to pour her a glass.

(Come on, Fanta, hit me up. This is a perfect place to do product placement. Jokes aside, I noticed the show had an orange bottle on the table, so I called it Fanta.)

Manny and Luke soon arrive in the dining room with smiles.

Phil heads towards them and says, "Hey, there are my little roustabouts. Look like you patched things up pretty well, huh."

Manny and luke simultaneously "Yeah."

Phil then goes around and puts his hands on their shoulders before continuing, "Ah, we can learn so much from the children. Bet it seems kind of silly now. What were you even fighting about, huh?"

Ryan immediately interrupts and says, "Nothing. They were fighting about nothing."

"I am hungry. Is anyone else? Let's eat."

Phil - "Come on, wait a minute. It can't be that bad. Let them speak."

Claire - "Yeah, Ryan, let them speak."

Ryan whispered in a low tone that only Alex could hear, "Well, it is your funeral."

Luke - " I made fun of his accent."

Gloria replied in a heavy accent, "What accent?."

Everyone chuckles.

Manny - "I made fun of him for having the same thing for lunch every day."

Everyone once again chuckles.

Luke - " I made fun of him because his mom used to dig coal."

The whole room instantly becomes pin-drop silent.

Gloria - "What?"

Manny - "He said you were a coal digger.

Phil - "Okay, I think we can move on." and pushes both the children away.

Gloria - "Who said I was a coal digger?"

Luke - "That's what..."

Ryan immediately covers Luke's mouth.

Ryan - "I think we will end it there."

Gloria left the kitchen and headed for Ryan.

Gloria - "Ryan, remove your hand from his mouth."

Luke - "Let me talk, let me talk."

Gloria then removes Ryan's hand and asks, "So, who told you I was a coal digger?"

Luke - "That's what my mom told me."

Alex asked Ryan, "What's a coal digger?"

Phil - "Sweetheart, he heard it wrong. It's "gold digger."

Haley, who was sitting on the counter still on the phone, spoke, "I am going to have to call you back."

Claire - "I really do not.... think that I, remember ever saying that."

Luke - "Well, you said it in the car, at Christmas, in the Mexican restaurant..."

Phil covers Luke's mouth.
