On the first day of his holiday, taking advantage of the good weather, Hu Yang packed a backpack and brought along Gengar, Roselia, and Cramorant for a walking tour. The closest route to Kanaz City would be through Petalburg Woods, but since it was currently closed, he had to take a longer detour.
A passenger car adorned with Torchic designs traveled smoothly along the asphalt road. The onboard music played a gentle piano tune, creating a harmonious atmosphere among the passengers. People who didn't know each other chatted softly with smiles on their faces. Conversations revolved around Pokémon, the recent Alliance tournament, and the yearning for adventures.
However, Hu Yang couldn't enjoy the cheerful atmosphere at all. He slumped in his seat, looking out the window with a forlorn expression. Unfortunately, his young body seemed to be prone to motion sickness.
"It's been a while since I've been in a car," he thought helplessly.
Unbeknownst to his fellow passengers, Hu Yang was carrying on a conversation with Gengar, who was not bound by a Poké Ball. Gengar asked him if he was feeling unwell, to which Hu Yang candidly replied that he felt like vomiting.
Gengar, seemingly taken aback, questioned, "You're not feeling well?" It was puzzled by this dramatic change from its previous lively and playful self.
"Are all humans this fragile?" Gengar inquired.
Before Hu Yang could respond, a considerate girl offered him an orange, suggesting it might help alleviate his discomfort. Although he initially declined, the girl wasn't offended. She then curiously inquired who he had been speaking to earlier.
Hu Yang, realizing his slip, remembered that Gengar was invisible to others. To cover for his mistake, he remarked that he was conversing with a mischievous ghost.
Gengar was displeased with this characterization, declaring, "Hmph, yesterday I was called cute, and today I'm a nasty ghost. You humans are so fickle!"
To prove he wasn't talking to himself, Hu Yang had Gengar materialize for a brief moment. The girl's eyes lit up at the sight of Gengar, recognizing it as a Pokémon Trainer's companion.
The remainder of the journey saw the girl engaging in a pleasant conversation with Gengar, allowing Hu Yang to rest and overcome his motion sickness.
Upon arrival in Kanaz City, Hu Yang felt invigorated by the fresh air and the bustling surroundings. Compared to Petalburg City, Kanaz City was notably larger and had a lot to offer in terms of attractions.
Kanaz City's unique location was of interest, bordered to the east by the Rusturf Tunnel, to the south by Petalburg Woods, and to the north by the ore-rich Meteor Falls. It was also home to significant locations like Devon Corporation and a Rock-type Gym, making it one of the most popular cities in the Hoenn Region.
As much as Hu Yang wished to explore Kanaz City, his primary objective was to catch a passenger ship, so he proceeded to the harbor.
Once on board the ship, he and Gengar lay down on the deck, watching as the coastline receded into the distance. The sight of the sparkling sea and the Pokémon swimming below the surface brought tranquility to the moment.
It wasn't long before a fellow passenger, a nobleman in a tuxedo, approached him, admiring the well-bred Roselia by his side. He went so far as to propose a trade of his Delcatty for Hu Yang's Roselia, a proposition which Hu Yang swiftly declined.
The nobleman expressed his desire to have a Roselia and mentioned the difficulties he had faced in evolving a Budew into one. Hu Yang explained that Roselia's pre-evolution, Budew, was relatively common and suggested that he could catch one for himself. However, the nobleman revealed his impatience, stating that it took too long for them to evolve.
Hu Yang noticed the nobleman's demeanor towards his Delcatty and deduced that not everyone saw Pokémon as companions. It was clear that the nobleman treated Delcatty more like a possession than a friend.
Hu Yang soon disembarked from the ship and inhaled the refreshing sea air. The pleasant journey, coupled with the fresh breeze, made him feel more alive than ever.
Once on the passenger ship, he and Gengar watched as the shoreline gradually disappeared until all that remained was the vast expanse of the sea, adorned with the occasional sighting of Water-type Pokémon.
Shortly after, a well-dressed nobleman approached Hu Yang and complimented his Roselia. The nobleman even proposed a trade, offering his Delcatty for Hu Yang's Roselia. Hu Yang, who valued the bond with his Pokémon, immediately declined the offer.
The nobleman revealed his long-standing desire for a Roselia and the challenges he faced in evolving a Budew. Hu Yang suggested that he catch a Budew in the wild and train it, but the nobleman explained that he had no patience for such a lengthy process.
Observing the nobleman's aloof attitude toward his Delcatty, Hu Yang realized that not everyone shared the same deep connection with their Pokémon. Some trainers saw them as mere tools or status symbols rather than cherished companions.
As he continued his journey, Hu Yang disembarked from the ship, relishing the invigorating sea breeze. The vastness of the sea and the presence of Water-type Pokémon below the surface provided a sense of wonder and excitement.
Gengar, having emerged from its Poké Ball, was equally captivated by the ocean. As the ship sailed further into the horizon, both Hu Yang and Gengar contemplated the adventures that lay ahead in Naipuru Gym.
