Well-Composed

When Emery finished having lunch with Catherine Sage, it was already 5 in the evening.

They weren't supposed to eat this late but Emery fell asleep after Catherine urged her to have some sleep. When she woke up, it was already past 4 p.m. and she also realized that Catherine Sage was with her all the time though she haven't had lunch either. Then they both ate after that.

"I think my brother will almost be home now," Emery said to Catherine who was now sitting opposite her in the living room. "Dad is mostly late but Jason always makes sure to come home on time for dinner so that I won't be eating alone."

She deliberately paused and smiled when she continued, "You're right before, Miss Sage. My brother is indeed a great person. Without him, I don't know how I will cope with my illness and all."

"I understand," Catherine Sage muttered and narrowed her eyes at Emery's legs. "I'm glad that you're getting better." She chuckled and continued, "As an athlete, I keep on thinking that some exercise will surely help you recover faster, be it physical or mental."

"Exercise?" Emery asked, wondering what kind of exercise was Catherine talking about.

Catherine Sage nodded. "Don't you think it would be great to learn some skills to defend yourself?" She glanced at Emery's legs once again and cautiously added, "I believe that the details of your accident are still not known. Just in case, you can learn to protect yourself."

Somehow, the idea excited Emery Hayes. "That's great!" she suddenly exclaimed, taking Catherine by surprise.

"You like it?" Surprisement was still written all over Catherine's face. "I know that my company provides security to both your mansion and all company buildings of Hayes Group. I can assure you that they are the best but... there are often times when we have to step up for ourselves. I just thought that it might be helpful to you. That's why I'm bringing this up."

"I'm curious, Miss Sage," Emery suddenly said. "How did you end up doing judo? You were so great when I watched you that day and I think that if you compete at the international level, you will still do well."

The National Champion flashed a bright smile when she heard Emery. "When I was just a small girl, my father established Sage Security. I still remember how I often went with him to watch the new recruits being trained to become top-level guards. I think that was how my interest started.

"When I watch them being trained, I always thought that it's cool and I even ended up learning some skills. Then I soon picked up judo." Catherine briefly narrowed her eyes and continued, "About competing at the international level... I often dreamed of it since I was a child. But to do that, I have to spend a lot of time in the National Training Center and I can't do that."

Since she was a child? Emery was feeling quite perplexed. "When you were younger, work still didn't bother you. Why can't you do it?"

"When my mother passed away, I was just 2," Catherine Sage told Emery. "That's why I have a very close bond with my father and since I was young, my father's health is never stable. He only has me and I don't want him to be alone."

"Wow! You're such a good daughter, Miss Sage." Emery Hayes's respect for Catherine surged even higher.

She put aside her dream just to stay beside her father?

"I'm only doing my duty as a daughter," Catherine said to her. "People often said that there is no familial love among members of a rich family but... I think both your family and mine prove that wrong. Don't you think so?"

Emery was too eager to nod in approval. Nevertheless, she promptly let out a sigh. "Both my father and brother are so caring that at times, I even feel like I'm a burden to them. I always make them worried."

"Aren't you only 22?" Catherine rhetorically asked her with a chuckle. "You're still at university and you're the youngest in the family. I dare to say that no matter how old you are, you will still be a child in the eyes of your father and brother."

"Do you really think that?" Emery frowned, but before she could say more words, she noticed her brother standing at the living room's entrance. "Jason, you're already back?"

Hearing the name, Catherine Sage hurriedly shifted her gaze in the direction where Emery was looking. Then she saw Jason Hayes standing there. The Vice-Chairman was holding his coat in his left arm while his right hand was in his pocket. Not to mention that he was intently gazing at her!

When Jason Hayes walked towards Catherine, the latter rose from her seat.

"It's been a while, Mr. Hayes," she greeted him with a little smile on her face.

"It is, Miss Sage." The Vice-Chairman's gaze briefly swept his younger sister and turned back to Catherine. "Are you here to visit Emery?"

"Oh," Catherine looked at Emery who was simply nodding at her, and said, "There is some situation and I gave Emery a ride back home. I was waiting for you or the Chairman to come home before I could leave."

Some situation? She even drove Emery home and also waited for him or his father to come home?

Jason Hayes could instantly guess that something had happened and he quickly looked at his sister and observed her.

"I'll tell you later," Emery chimed in when she noticed the undeniable concern in her brother's eyes. "I'm fine now."

Putting aside the concern she witnessed, Emery was surprised by how well-composed her brother was!

It's Jason's first time seeing Catherine again in two weeks and the latter even came to their family mansion for the second time. However, Jason was quite calm and he didn't even appear to be surprised.

Didn't he wait to hear something from her in the past two weeks?
