It was Davinder.

“Hi,” I answered in a breath. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, yeah,” he said softly. “Noah’s safe in his hotel room.”

“Did you guys talk a little on the way?”

“We did.”

“And?”

“Things are better, but I needed to hear your voice one last time before I went to sleep.”

I crept back to my bedroom and lay down. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Nothing. I just want to listen to you breathe and know that you’re not too far away.”

“Okay…sure.” I shut my eyes, making myself comfortable on the pillows. “I won’t hang up until you fall asleep.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to, Davinder.”

He’d been lonely for too long. I didn’t want him to be lonely anymore.

Not ever again.
