Imran Series by Ibn_e_Safi

The "Imran Series" by Ibn-e-Safi is a renowned collection of Urdu spy novels, centered around the character Ali Imran, a secret agent working for the secret service of an unnamed country. The series, started in the early 1950s, blends elements of mystery, adventure, and humor, creating a unique and captivating narrative style. Ali Imran, the protagonist, is portrayed as a deceptively goofy and frivolous character, often underestimated by his adversaries due to his seemingly inept behavior. However, beneath this facade lies a brilliant and cunning mind, making him an exceptional detective and spy. Imran operates under various aliases and employs an eclectic team of assistants to tackle criminal masterminds, thwart espionage plots, and unravel complex mysteries. The series features a rich array of recurring characters, including Imran's loyal sidekicks like Joseph Mugonda, a strongman with a gentle heart, and the beautiful yet deadly Julia. Each novel introduces readers to new villains and intricate plots, keeping the stories fresh and engaging. The blend of action, intrigue, and humor, along with Safi's vivid and witty writing, has earned the "Imran Series" a cherished place in South Asian literature, continuing to captivate readers across generations. Disclaimer: I'm not the writer of this series. The original writer was actually "Asrar Ahmed" and he wrote this beautiful series of novels by the alias of "Ibn-e-Safi" (1928-1980). The original series was in Urdu language. I'm a big fan of "Ibn-e-Safi" and "Imran Series". I wanted to bring this series to global readers, so I am translating it into English and putting it on this large platform.

Eyes in the darkness_1

The night was dark... and whirlwinds of black clouds were swirling in the sky. Captain Fayyaz's motorcycle was slicing through the darkness, slipping on the slick road. Imran was staring around like an owl from the carrier. His lips were pursed, and his nostrils were flaring. Suddenly, he tapped Fayyaz on the shoulder and said:

"It is certain that someone has made a copy of the key of One-Eye's Father."

"Hmm! But why?"

"I will tell you after asking."

"From whom?"

"From the boundless blue sky, the star-filled night, the gently moving cold airs... goodness me... from the winds!"

Fayyaz said nothing! Imran kept muttering, "But the key to the martyr's grave sweeper!... Acquiring it must have been relatively easy... Anyway, we need to find out the history of this building. Perhaps we have reached its vicinity. Stop the motorcycle."

Fayyaz stopped the motorcycle.

"Turn off the engine."

Fayyaz turned off the engine. Imran took the motorcycle from his hands and hid it in a bush.

"What exactly do you want to do?" Fayyaz asked.

"I wonder why you keep taking me along." Imran replied.

"The murder... that took place in this building."

"Don't say murder, say accident."

"Accident!... What do you mean?" Fayyaz asked in surprise.

"For the meaning, see Ghiyas-ul-Lughat(a dictionary), page 112... By the way, I remember Begum Para on page 112. Begum Para requires Amrit Dhara, otherwise, it's like David's clean-shaven head."

Fayyaz was annoyed and stayed silent.

Both of them slowly moved towards the building. They first circled the entire building and then stopped near the main entrance.

"Oh." Imran murmured softly, "This isn't locked."

"How did you see it... I can't see anything," Fayyaz said.

"Because you're not an owl," Imran replied. "Move aside."

They moved away from there and came to the back of the house. Imran was looking upwards. The wall was quite high... He took a torch out of his pocket and started shining light on the wall.

"Can you bear my weight?" he asked Fayyaz.

"I don't understand."

"To explain to you, I would need a proper blackboard and chalk. I mean to say, I want to go up."

"Why? Do you think someone is inside?" Fayyaz asked.

"No, I just intend to fool around. Come on, sit down. I'll stand on your shoulders and..."

"But the wall is still very high."

"Man, don't argue pointlessly," Imran said, getting annoyed. "Otherwise, I'm going back."

Reluctantly, Fayyaz sat down at the base of the wall.

"Hey, take off your shoes," Fayyaz said.

"Don't run off with them," Imran said and took off his shoes, then stood on Fayyaz's shoulders.

"Okay, now stand up."

Fayyaz slowly stood up... Imran's hand reached the transom window! In the next moment, he was climbing the wall like a monkey... Fayyaz watched him in amazement, mouth agape. He wondered whether Imran was a man or a demon. Was this the same fool who sometimes seemed as harmless as an earthworm?

Using the transom windows, Imran climbed over and descended to the other side. He stood pressed against the wall for a few moments, then slowly began moving towards the direction from which several footsteps could be heard.

It didn't take him long to realize that the unknown men were in the same room where he had seen the corpse. The door to the room was closed from the inside, but a faint yellow light from a candle was seeping through the doors. Besides that, the hallway was completely dark.

Imran, clinging to the wall, slowly moved towards the door, but suddenly his gaze lifted towards the martyr's grave, whose tombstone was raised. There was a slight light between the tombstone and the floor, and in that gap, two terrifying eyes were staring into the darkness.

Imran stopped in his tracks, staring at the grave... Suddenly, a scream came from the grave. It was either a scream or the sound of a female monkey whose neck had been grabbed by a dog.

Imran leaped into the adjacent room! He knew what the reaction to that scream would be for those in the other room! Standing in the doorway, he was looking towards the grave. The tombstone was still raised, and those terrifying eyes were still shooting sparks. With the second scream, the door of the adjacent room opened, and another scream was heard, different from the first. Probably, it was one of those unknown men.

"Ghost, ghost!" someone said in a trembling voice, and then it seemed as if several people were running towards the main door.

A little while later, a groan was heard. The tombstone had been adjusted back.

Imran lay on the ground, panting, as he slowly made his way towards the main door, occasionally glancing back towards the grave, but the tombstone remained undisturbed.

The main door was closed from the outside. After making sure everything was alright, Imran returned.

The door to the room with the corpse was open. But now darkness reigned there. Imran closed the door softly and took out a torch. But as soon as he turned on the light...

"Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." He murmured softly, "May God forgive you too."

He was in the same place where he had seen a corpse before. Another body lay there... It had three wounds on its back, from which blood was flowing onto the floor. Imran bent down to look. It was a well-dressed and quite handsome young man, possibly from an upper-class society.

"Today, it's their turn to go." Imran said in a casual tone, straightening up. In his hand was a piece of paper that he had carefully retrieved from the dead man's pocket.

For a few moments, he looked at it in the light of the torch. Then, with a meaningful gesture, he put it in the inner pocket of his coat. The condition of the rest of the room was the same as he had seen last time. There was no noticeable difference.
