These shadowy creatures gave chase relentlessly, their voices echoing with a chilling cadence. "Get him away from you! Don't let him breach your defenses! He'll only bring pain! Stay away from him! You don't need him here! He'll hurt you time and time again! Enough is enough! Don't trust him, or you'll suffer once more!"
Stunned, I managed to shout over the gusts of wind, "What are these creatures?"
Burying her face in my chest, she whispered fearfully, "They are the guardians of my heart. The moment they sensed I might allow you into its deepest recesses, they emerged to eliminate you."
"But why?" I pressed, trying to maximize our distance from the beasts.
"They fear you'll hurt me even more."
"I won't, I promise!"
