So painful were those moments When the earth shook and the seas rose How cheerful life could stand still As though everything was killed All the happiness gone once for all That seemed to me a painful fall Everything I knew wiped away All I could hear was the deafening silence All I could feel was emptiness As if everything was shrouded in darkness All I could hear was my sister crying in madness Adapted from Farah Sherazi's Destruction, Death and Decay.

Chapter 25: How to Level Up

Betty and Raziel walked back to the Vice-Admiral's apartment. They met the Vice-Admiral sitting on the couch in the sitting room.

Vice-Admiral Rowland turned to look at them. He stared at Raziel's head for a few seconds before turning away, "Pack your bags, we're going to the capital tomorrow."

He stood up from his chair and walked to his room, "Follow me, Raziel."

Raziel was scared. The last time the Vice-Admiral asked him to follow him, the result was very unpleasant. He followed behind the Vice-Admiral, he didn't have much of a choice.

They both walked into the Vice-Admiral's room and Raziel closed the door behind. He stood at the door and watched Vice-Admiral Rowland sit on his bed. There was a desk at the far corner of the room with a computer on it but it was switched off, it had a chair in front of it.

Vice-Admiral smoothed the edge of his bed cover and said, "I made some inquiries about cosmic superhumans. Your method of advancement is different from us. In fact, all of you from the main pathways have different method of advancing.

"Your own method involves using your cosmic fire to cook the brain of whatever you're using to advance and eating it. For humans, it's better to use someone on the same level as yours or someone stronger. Never use someone weaker than you. If you're using someone stronger, know your limits. Don't refine all their energy at once.

"You people have it a lot worse than us. Remember, before you attempt to advance at all, you have to be at the peak of your level. When you're at the peak of your level, you'll know. Refining another source of energy is to only give you the boost you need to level up. Refining another source of energy also gives you the corresponding knowledge.

"Fighting helps to refine your powers and push you to the peak of your level. The only way you can get to the peak of your level is through battles.

"Also choose your battles wisely. If you get wounded, I can't help you. Healing potions cost a fortune and they hardly work for very severe injuries. A healing potion cost one thousand dollars and you can only use it once.

"Betty may be able to help you when you're injured, but do you think she'll waste her powers on you? Healing people would cost her energy she would rather save."

Raziel was thinking of how to avoid using humans to advance. He barely listened to the rest of Vice-Admiral Rowland's words. It was hard enough blending someone's head in a magical blender to turn it into a liquid potion and swallowing it. Whatever caused the emergence of Mojo seemed to hate humans. How the fuck was he going to cook a human brain and eat it? He decided to hunt only animals for his advancement. Killing a human was one thing, eating their brain is a different thing entirely.

Vice-Admiral Rowland could guess what was going on in Raziel's mind. He chuckled, "You may not want to kill other human for your advancement but they sure as hell would kill you.

"Look at this base for example, every soldier here won't hesitate to hand you over to the government at the slightest chance."

Vice-Admiral Rowland pointed to his desk, "There's a file on that table. Go through it."

Raziel walked up to the desk and picked up the file. He perused it. There was a picture of a girl in it who looked to be in her early twenties. Her name was Maca Zahir. There was no other information. He looked at Vice-Admiral Rowland for clarification.

Vice-Admiral Rowland explained, "That's the niece of the President of this country. She's a very elusive figure. I have no information about her. I only know she exists and she's the President's favourite. I want you to use any means possible and find out everything about her."

Raziel nodded, "But why do you want to know more about her?"

Vice-Admiral Rowland's hands crackled with lightning, "Are you questioning my orders?"

Raziel instantly fell to the ground and apologised, "I dare not sir." As his face was facing the ground, he thought to himself; it was only a matter of time. When he becomes powerful, he'll make him pay. He decided he must pretend to fear the Vice-Admiral and obey all his orders till he breaks free from his grasp.

Vice-Admiral Rowland was happy his punishment a few days ago worked, "She's currently in the capital. She's the only weakness of the President but nobody has dared touch her even though they know about her. I want to know why nobody has made a move against her."
