He returned. I looked up at him. “Best not to get the coffee from me, sir; I tend to screw up the orders. The oat bars I do pretty well with, though, only occasionally mixing them up with the apricot kind.”

He sucked in his breath. “You…you couldn’t possibly have heard that,” he said as he plopped back down in his chair. “It’s a trick. It has to be a trick.”

“No, sir,” I replied. “I can also hear your heart right now. It’s beating awfully fast. Too much caffeine in your diet, perhaps?” I took a deep whiff. “You had a hamburger for lunch. Fries as well.” I sniffed again. “A Coke on the side. Barbeque potato chips.” I tsked him and wagged my finger his way. “Not very healthy, if you ask me.”

His eyes went wide. “I don’t like this game anymore, Lucas.”

I rose. I placed my hands on his desk. I leaned in as the smile all at once left my face. “This is no game, sir. You’re only one of a few people who know my true identity.”
