And he wouldn’t be very good at it even if he tried.” He sighed and fell onto the bed, looking up at the ceiling. “No, he was on the up and up. It’s that senator who was no good. He got the money, the grant, but, somehow, seven million of it wound up elsewhere, namely to that lab up in the mountains. But what were they doing up there and how does it relate to you?”

The hairs on my neck stood up. I had to tread lightly here. I mean, what could I tell him that wouldn’t potentially get him into trouble or reveal my secret identity? Maybe in a month or two, or six, I’d fill him in. Maybe when I knew that he and I were in it for the long haul. Maybe then I’d tell him. But not yet, not until I was sure we’d work out. This shit was clearly dangerous enough; telling him any more than what he already knew was like aiming a gun his way and praying it didn’t go off.
