Truth

The fog again appeared after the bas started moving. I looked at Cheryl and held her hand. After a few minutes ride the bus stopped. And as always the driver got off. I couldn’t move, I was having a low key anxiety attack. I didn’t know what to expect. I stood up still holding Cheryl’s hand and we walked out of the bus. She had closed her eyes and didn’t want to open them. The fog was still dense until the bus drove away. All this time Cheryl didn’t want to open her eyes. “just tell me to open my eyes when the face or whatever tells us the riddle. I looked at what was in front of us, let go of her hand and said “I don’t think this time it’s gonna be a riddle”. “What?”, She said and opened her eyes. “what is this!” she shouted.

In front of us was a giant gate with a symbol that looked like some kind of a Series of circles with a stickman running in the middle. As we stood there waiting for something to happen someone on top of the gate appeared from the other side he was blurry but turns out it was a she by the sound of her voice. “hello there, let what your feels be your drive so that you can follow when I arrive, the time you have will show itself, well good luck” she said while returning back to the other side. “ Did you get that?”, Cheryl asked. “yea, what now”, I answered. As I started backing up too see whether I could see the upper side clearly the door suddenly screeched open. It was dusty and as soon as the dust cleared we started walking in. It was now clear, it was a maze. “it’s a maze”, Cheryl said while looking around. “or a labyrinth”, I added. The door behind us shut and blew a cloud of dust again. There was still no opening and we walked for a distance to finally find it. To the walls were made of concrete and had big cracks but were still hard enough to try break them. The opening was a left turn and it was getting kind of scary. “well, and let the nerve reckoning begin”, I said hysterically. After the left turn we came to the first point where we had to choose a turn. “what now”, Cheryl asked. If it wasn’t a serious situation as it was, I would have suggested a good old rock paper scissors to determine what turn to take. But it was a life and death situation so we had to think.

“wait the lady said something about following something?”, Cheryl said while snapping her fingers to remember. “yea, she said we should let our feels be the drive so that we can follow whatever arrives.”, I answered. As we stood there I heard something , a smooth hissing sound. “do you hear that”, I whispered. She stopped snapping and moving and got completely quite. She shook her head and pointed to the left. The hissing sound was coming from the left turn. She gestured be me to follow her which I did because why not and I had no idea why. As we turned left the right opening rumbled shut. “of course, she meant we should use our senses to follow the wind”, Cheryl said while smiling. “well this is gonna be easy”, I said smiling. “yes, but the wrong move and we take the wrong turn and we vet trapped or squished or whatever in here”, she said ambitiously. “got it”, I said as I followed her. The turn was a distant walk, so I took this opportunity to get to know her. “so how are you so good at puzzles and riddles?”, I asked. She looked up and around and said “ my dad used to love them, he used to um, come with tons of books about them and we would solve them together”. “wow and here I am thinking that you worked at a puzzle and riddle store”, I said sarcastically. “wow!” she said rather with an attitude. “what?”, I asked.

“I can’t believe I’ve lived next to you for over four years now and this is the longest conversation we’ve had”, she said. I couldn’t tell her I didn’t like her, “ well we never have the chance, I mean with me and the early mornings to go to work and the late nights, no Wonder”. She stopped and looked right at me with a judgmental smile, “funny because we always take the same bus to work and for some reason every time I see you in the elevator you always to coincidentally be talking on your phone”. It was becoming clear to me that my efforts of ignoring her had been compromised. “what are you saying Cheryl”, I asked while giving a subtle grin. “am saying it’s suspicious that every time I see you, you don’t see me and or you are on your phone or listening to loud music or staring out the window in the bus”, she said as she smiled while walking. I had always been annoyed by her but I was starting to think I was the one with the problem. But as I was about to defend myself with a load of lies we reached the next turns. So like earlier we got dead silent and listened. But there was nothing for a while. “have you heard anything?”, I whispered. “no, not yet”, she whispered back. We listened again but nothing.

Maybe it already blew but we didn’t hear anything, I thought. But as I was asking myself questions we heard something but it wasn’t the wind. Way up in the sky behind us was a murder of crows. They were cawing so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves talk. “we won’t hear the sound of the wind”, Cheryl shouted. But it hit me, hearing is just one of the five senses and we already used it. So I stood at the middle of the turns pulled out one my hairs and held it up. “what are you doing?”, Cheryl shouted. I kept quite for a minute and stopped. “follow me”, I shouted while taking a right turn. “wait, are you sure about this?”, she asked. “trust me!”, I replied as she followed me. As soon as we made the turn the crows disappeared and the left turn suddenly opened from below and rumbled shut. “whoa, but how did you know?”, Cheryl asked. I explained to her what I had discovered and she wanted to come up with a system. “so we’ve used the sense of hearing and seeing, so we’re left with smell, taste and touch, it doesn’t make sense how are we supposed to taste or touch or smell the wind?”. I had watched a lot of movies and science documentaries and it was about time I took advantage of that knowledge.
