Katherine was quite dissatisfied, thinking she didn't need anyone to guide her, but in the end, for reasons she couldn't understand, she still grabbed the bucket and went outside.
Soon, the sound of scrubbing came from the doorway.
After a long while, she finally spoke up again.
"I can't get it clean!"
"That's paint, of course, it won't come off."
"Then why did you ask me to clean it?"
"Who knew you'd be so obedient?"
This time, Katherine was truly angry, angrily throwing the cleaning tools on the ground. But remembering that this was her probation task, she reluctantly picked up the brush again.
Her reaction puzzled Randy.
Why was she being so submissive all of a sudden? Shouldn't she have stormed off in a rage?
Thinking about the old nun they had encountered yesterday, Randy wondered if that was the reason.
No wonder the church had grown so large—it was because the faithful were so devoted.
Of course, the old nun's piety was largely due to using faith as a tool for profit.
"Katherine, your behavior just now has won my approval."
"Really?"
The young nun was instantly overjoyed, even showing a look of relief.
Randy saw this and immediately confirmed that she was here with an agenda.
An evil idea sprouted in Randy's mind.
"Yes, I rejected you so decisively before, and today I made things difficult for you, but you still sincerely offered me help, without expecting anything in return. You had no ulterior motive, just a desire to guide a lost soul like me."
These words made Katherine's smile turn slightly ashamed.
Her enthusiasm was more about becoming a full-fledged member as soon as possible.
But having such a strong purpose really went against the essence of spreading the faith—it even bordered on excessive flattery.
Someone else might have shamelessly ignored their own faults, but Katherine was different. She held the highest regard for the church and its teachings and wouldn't allow any blasphemy.
"I'm ashamed."
She lowered her head without offering any further explanation and silently continued scrubbing the graffiti from the door.
This only confirmed she had a guilty conscience, but her positive attitude in admitting her fault also impressed Randy.
This was how a true believer should behave. Look at his own subordinates—either monsters, recluses, or a bunch of misfits chasing after a cult.
Randy grew more determined to poach her from the church.
As Katherine was cleaning the door, she suddenly shivered inexplicably. She looked up at the house, and there was Randy, staring at her intently.
"What is it?" Katherine tightened her clothes.
"Nothing. You're doing a good job cleaning, Katherine. I can see that you're someone with pure faith, and a loving heart."
As Randy spoke, he got up and walked toward the kitchen.
Katherine also stood up, though it felt like a cliché. Her instincts told her that being praised by Randy was not necessarily a good thing.
"If there's something you need to say, I'll definitely help if I can."
Katherine guessed it might have something to do with his ruined home. As a minority and an orphan, Randy's life must have been tough. Maybe his parents had left behind a huge debt, and the house was destroyed by debt collectors?
But that didn't make sense either—why would debt collectors call someone a demon?
While she was lost in thought, Randy came back with a small glass jar in his hand, containing several seeds.
"These are lotus seeds, left to me by my parents. But unfortunately, I don't have the time or energy to take care of them."
Randy showed a sorrowful, regretful, and guilty expression.
"I'd like to ask you to plant them in the convent. I think if it's you, you can surely care for them and let them bloom in a place of faith. I'll visit often to see them."
Hearing this, Katherine's face tensed, as if a heavy responsibility had been placed on her shoulders.
She quickly took the glass jar.
"Don't worry, I'll take good care of them! But are there any special things I should be mindful of with these flowers?"
"I knew I wasn't wrong about you."
Randy nodded in satisfaction and then listed the care instructions for the flowers. In fact, it was quite simple; they didn't even need much watering or fertilizing and could grow well on their own.
Katherine listened attentively but was also puzzled. If they were so easy to grow, why didn't he plant them himself?
It was as if he read her thoughts, and Randy explained, "I may not have much time to care for them in the future. Flowers, like people, need attention and communication. It won't take up much of your time, and the church's chanting will help them grow stronger."
Katherine finally nodded.
"Rest assured, I'll take good care of them, and I'll invite you to the convent to see them when they bloom!"
Randy smiled and nodded, then changed the subject.
"Thank you so much. I'd love to chat more with you, like last time on the train."
Katherine immediately tightened her clothes. "You'd better not get any ideas about me. I'm a nun!"
Technically, a nun is a woman devoted to serving God.
"Don't worry, I just want to have a normal conversation. I still have many questions about this world, and I'll need someone like you to help me understand them."
The moment to shatter her faith would come soon enough.
As someone on the path of evil, Randy had many dark methods at his disposal.
Katherine smiled. "Alright, see you next time, then."
For some reason, Randy ended the conversation abruptly, and Katherine hadn't even realized she hadn't accomplished what she came for.
Randy escorted her to the door, but suddenly, he felt a surge of magical energy.
He immediately turned his gaze next door.
"What's wrong?"
Katherine was curious, but her mouth soon formed an "O."
The ground was trembling, as if an earthquake had struck.
The street's power lines suddenly exploded and fell, and the house next to Carrie's began to visibly shake.
"Run, it's an earthquake!" Katherine shouted in shock.
"Get to the street!" Randy ordered before rushing toward Carrie's house.
Katherine realized something too. "Yes! sister Margaret's house!"
She wanted to follow, but a large tree beside Carrie's house suddenly fell, blocking her path. She could only watch as Randy kicked open the door and ran into Carrie's house.
