Chapter 45: Taking Down the Beast

“If he’s in his office, he might try to escape through the dungeons,” I said to Captain Carson as we headed down the hall.

“If there’s a way out, there’s a way in,” he said.

I nodded. “Around back there’s a basement bulkhead. We’ll keep him from leaving.” I motioned to Ash.

“Right,” Carson said. He peeled off with Zinnia and the other detectives. They headed for the back door.

“You really think he’s still in there?” Ash asked. “There’s no way he didn’t hear all this.”

I sniffed just outside the door of Caleb’s office. “I’m sure of it,” I said.

Ash nodded. He held his arm out to keep me back and kicked in the office door. Ash ran in and I followed. Caleb was struggling with the closet door that led down to the dungeon, his arms full of files and folders of his research.

He groaned when he saw us and rolled his eyes.

“You’re not going anywhere,” I said, slamming the office door closed behind us.
