Chapter 4: School day and Meeting the Cullens
Well, I can say living as a normal human was probably something I had been looking for all these years cause boy it's relaxing.
I mean, no constant guard, no scavenging for meals, no stealing shops for food and parts to fix my bike, which now by the way I got it fixed for free curtesy of Jacob as a meeting gift. In my books, I was living the good life.
Currently, I am catching up on Junior level courses so I don't look like a total idiot when I go back to school. One good thing about being a werewolf was that to cope with all the additional and enhanced senses we naturally get, our brains have expanded allowing more synapses to fire in the brain giving us superhuman processing power,
(A/N I did High school Biology like three years ago so all this is from my ass)
Therefore, also having a superhuman memory. When Charlie gave me the exams and saw how I aced them with not even a day of studying, he was silent and just looked at Bella, who also smart, but not as smart as a werewolf.
Speaking of Bella, the week that I've been staying here has allowed me to get to know her a lot better. She's more of an introvert and klutz kind of girl but once you get to know her, she becomes a great friend. It also helped we had similar hobbies of reading and music though I can't help but say her taste in music didn't go with my taste but to each their own I guess.
Anyways, it was the day before we were supposed to go to school. Charlie already took the liberty of enrolling us into Forks Highschool after he finished grading my papers , and not surprisingly, I got in without a hinch. Bella also got in so there was no issue there.
The only issue I had was that I literally had no clothes, or anything for that matter except the bike and helmet to my name. The clothes situation had to be made due with Charlie's until the weekend where we would go shopping cause although Charlie was built for a human, his size was a 'little' to small for werewolf standards. As for pens and notebooks, Charlie gave me some unused pens and printer paper for me to use in the meantime.
As I was studying, Bella came into my room after a knock and saw me studying.
"Derek, don't you get bored looking a textbooks all day? At least read some novels book brain."
Bella joked as she just threw a packet of cookies at me and I caught them without looking up from the textbook. After I finished reading the last sentence, I closed the textbook and replied to the cookie thrower.
"Unlike you Bella, I have to catch up on at least 4 years of course material in a week, plus some extra so I don't wast my time with studying where I could be off snacking on cookies, oh yeah, and don't throw my cookie, what if they break?"
One thing I found out after moving in here is that Forks has a local company that makes cookies and you wouldn't imagine the flavour I experienced when I tried them out. Since then, a packet has always been on me all times.
Another thing was that in regards to my past, I just told Bella after my parents died, my foster family moved around too much for me to actually Lear anything before they were also killed, so I moved here.
She questioned me at first saying why didn't he come here but I just replied I didn't know I had extended family and now here we are.
"Ok nerd, I won't disturb your date with the textbook, looks like that ladies at our new school are going to have tough competition."
She sarcastically before leaving my room.
I just rolled my eyes and continued studying the next textbook I had aside on my table. I munched on some cookies as I kept turning the pages, absorbing the information on them as the clock ticks.

The next day.
Bella and I finished getting ready for school and said bye to a Charlie before going outside and beside our respective rides. I parked my bike in the driveway of the house next to Bella's truck.
The outfit I was wearing was very similar to my everyday fit, considering I still haven't gone clothes shopping. I was wearing one of Charlie's plain white T-shirts as my old one was too dirty to use. On my legs I wore Black jeans as I washed those at least cause his pants don't fit me. Finishing off I wore my signature leather jacket. My dad always wore one so I guessed the habit passed down as I also like wearing them.
Anyway, I put on my helmet and mounted my bike. Bella's entered her car and started her engine. She waited for me to pull out which I did after I started my engines. Once I pulled out, I started driving in the direction of the school that a Charlie showed us the other day. Bella was right behind me with her orange truck as we made our way towards school.
I obviously arrived first considering what I was riding and that I pulled too much ahead, almost pulling 10 km/h above the speed limit. There were already a lot of students at the parking lot, so once they saw the unfamiliar bike, they were curious and wanted to see who it was. I just parked my bike in an empty place and 5 mins later, Bella came in with her truck. She parked in the space next to me and got out of the orange monstrosity. I dismounted my bike and took off my helmet.
The surrounding students gasped, probably at our good looks. I didn't mention it, but to a a normal high schooler, Bella was like a swan in a flock of geese, she just stood out. I probably didn't notice cause 1, she was family and it would be weird if I looked that way at her and 2, I was waiting on my imprint, wherever she was.
Me on the other hand, I just gave off bad boy delinquent energy which was considered hot to some girls? I don't know. I only know what type of vibes I was giving thanks to Bella who asked why I dressed like that.
Bella was immediately shy and awkward when she noticed people staring at her, which weirdly gave me an instinct to protect. So, as a responsible friend, I just led her to the building while giving her an encouraging look towards her. She was grateful for what I had done and was immediately happy again. Truth be told, it was also my first time with so many people around my age so I was a little nervous, but I got used to it quickly as it wasn't as scary as what I had been through.
As we entered the building, my wolf senses picked on someone heading toward us so I looked in that direction and there I could see an Asian looking kid coming towards us. I was on guard in case he pulled something but it was not a high probability considering where we were.
"You're…Isabella Swan and Derek Hale, the new kids! Hi, I'm Eric, the eyes and ears of this place. Anything you need; tour guide, lunch date…. shoulder to cry on?
Eric said while eyeing Bella after making the last comment.
I looked at Bella and she seemed uncomfortable so I stepped in.
"Thanks, but no thanks. We have classes to get to so we'll seek you out if we need anything, alright?"
I said in a threatening tone which made the poor kid in front of me back away in fear a little bit and nodded frantically.
"Y-yeah sure, s-s-see you around!"
He stutters before running away in fright.
"You didn't have to do that you know?"
Bella said as she looked at me but I could see the gratefulness in her eyes.
"Yeah yeah, alright, but you still owe me cookies after all the help I gave you this morning."
I said before going to my first class, which on my schedule was Math.
Going down the school hallways was a novel experience for me who was practically homeschooled for all my schooling career. I mean, you sure as heck don't find yourself walking down an isle with lockers plating the walls as students rush to their next classes.
There was also the fact that practically all the girls were swooning when they saw my appearance. Some of these girls did look pretty, but as they weren't my imprint or didn't have much to take notice of, I just gave them a polite smile as I headed to class.
I finally found my class which I walked in to find almost all the students there except a few empty desks. I walked in and the teacher quickly took notice of me as he walked over to me with a wide smile.
"Ahh, good to see you! You must be Derek Hale right? Welcome to class, I'm Mr. Varner and I will be your math teacher for the remaining of the semester. If you need any help don't hesitate to ask me."
Introduced Mr. Varner as he gestured for me to take a seat.
"Ah thanks teach, and yeah I'll ask if anything pops up."
I thanked him and tried to search for an empty desk.
By now, everyone's attention was on me. I saw curious looks as well as infatuated looks as well as some fearful looks? Was my appearance that scary? Anyway I scanned the room for a desk and I found a pleasant surprise.
I saw the kid who I asked for directions sitting with an empty desk next to him. Seeing someone I recognized, I made my way towards that desk and sat next to him.
"Hey, nice to see you again. Thanks again for the directions you gave me last time."
I said as I extended my hand out for a hand shake.
The kid just looked at me and replied.
"Sorry, do I know you? I would remember if I met a cool looking dude like you but I'm pulling blanks here."
He said as he gave me a scrutinizing look.
I was confused for a second, then remembered that when I asked him for directions the other day, I had my helmet still on so he didn't get a look at my face.
"My bad, I was the guy you gave directions to the other day, the one with the bike going to the police station."
I informed him.
He looked surprised then came to a realization as he could now recognize the leather jacket I was wearing.
"Ah, It's you! The Biker dude who was new around here! I remember now, how was the thing at the police station by the way? Any problems?"
He asked curiously as he started to pull out his notebook as Mr. Varner was getting ready to start the lesson.
"There was no problem at all. I just had to get to my relatives place and I didn't know the address so I went there to get it."
I said giving a simple answer as I also proceeded to take out my stack of papers.
For the rest of the period, the teacher taught the class as me and the kid, who I found out his name was Mike Newton, started to talk and make friends with each other. He was a cool kid, a little pervy but normal none the less as we whispered as the teacher thought the lesson. I was lying attention at first, but then got bored as I already learned the material on my own and he was going at a snails pace. So I talked to Mike who also seemed not to pay attention as either he learned the material or he was just not paying attention.
Anyway, the bell rang and I went to my next class which was PE. Coincidentally, Mike also had the same PE class as me so we went to the change room together to change into our gym clothes. As I talked more with Mike, I found out more of his hobbies. He was a movie nerd but was not good with horror films as he shivered while talking about them. I also found out that his parents owned an sporting goods company and he worked part time there to earn some extra cash.
Honestly, I was jealous he already had a job to earn some cash so I just casually asked if I could work there as well and it surprised me when he said he'll ask his folks. I was thankful and we talked about more things as we were changing into our gym wear. He asked me why I moved into Forks and I just told him I'm living with my uncle while not delving too deep into the situation with my parents. I didn't want to bring a human into the supernatural fray so I just cut it off there. He seemed to understand something was going on and left it there.
After we finished changing, we headed to the gymnasium for class. When the two of us arrived, the boys already ready flocked toward us and started playing around with Mike. Apparently, he was one of the most popular kids in the grade so he had a lot of friends.
After messing around with his friends, he started to introduce me to the gang.
"Hey guys, this is the new kid who came in this morning, Derek Hale. Derek, these are my friends since I started high-school."
"Cool, nice to meet you guys, I'm new here so I hope you guys can show me some of the attractions here."
I said as I extended my hand for a hand shake.
"Yeah l, no problem dude we got you. Anyways, I heard from the girls there was a super hot dude that transferred today and looking at you, I can see why they would flock to you, oh I'm Tyler by the way, nice to meet you."
Tyler jokingly said as he shook my hand while he complimented my looks.
While I'm not gay, it was nice hearing someone say you look good. The lot of us just hung around waiting for the teacher to come when just then, the girls started to come in the gym. I could see why some of the human males liked gym class as the gym wear hugged their bodies and accentuated their curves. They were pretty, but they weren't my type or imprint so I just gave them a glance and continued talking with the group. I couldn't say it they didn't have an affect on all of us as Mike and Tyler looked at them for a while while the other guys were more or less the same. I sighed as I no knew that these guys were just horny teenagers. I mean I am too but it works differently for werewolves.
I just sat down and waited for the teacher when a familiar figure walked through the doors.
Bella walked through the doors a little timidly and scanned the room. When she saw me, she formed a big smile and came over to me, which was at the corner of the room sitting on a wooden team bench. She sat next to me and started talking.
"Derek! I didn't know we had the same gym class? Thank god I have someone I know in my least favourite subject."
Bella said as she sighed in relief. It seemed that the week of bonding really solidified my image as a reliable friend for her somehow, I mean, do people really make friends this fast? Well, considering I made a friend in first period says something about the issue of friend making.
Anyway, before I can reply, the teacher walked in and started the class. I stood up and went with my friends while telling Bella we'll talk more at lunch, which was right after gym. I walked to my group of friends and the teacher started explaining the class.
Apparently, today was a sport rotation with boys starting on basketball while the girls did volleyball. Mike and the gang went to the basketball court half of the gym while the girls went to the other half where they started to set up the net. I just went to the basketball hoop and reminisced when me and the neighbourhood kids played soccer or basketball when I was still living in that small town. Sidetracked, Mark and the others brought the ball and started divi'ing up the teams. I was put in a team with Taylor and some other kids while Mike was on the other team. Waiting for the Rock Paper Scissors for the ball Taylor and Mike were doing to end, I gazed over to the girls side to see how Bella was doing. As usual, she was timid and I could see she was nervous from the way her legs were shaking and not going into the ready position that I read about in a book. While I was looking, Taylor had won the possession and our team started with the ball.
The game quickly started as Taylor passed the ball to one our teammates as he dribbled the ball while the other team were trying to block him. Once he was blocked, he passed the ball to our teammate only to be intercepted by the other team. I, with my very limited experience in basket ball just stood by the enemy net so if the ball comes to me, I can shoot and hope to score. As the game was getting intense in the middle of the court, I looked over to the volleyball side and saw they were getting intense as well. Bella was like a lost duck and didn't know what was going on. I saw the ball coming towards her and she just swatted away like a bug. Luckily one of her teammates received the ball and the ball was put into play once more. The game once again got heated and the ball once again came towards her. She swatted it again and this time it hit the back of Mike's head, ouch. She quickly ran over to him to apologize while the respective groups continued with their game. I couldn't be bothered to check the situation as the ball was headed right for my face. I nonchalantly palmed the ball with one hand and while on the roll, jumped over the guy who was defending me and dunked the ball.
When I landed, the court was speechless for a while until my team cheered so loudly that the girl group also wanted to know what was going on. My team ran to me to ask questions like how could I dunk and if I wanted to join the basketball team. I could also tell the girls were even hornier than before cause I could smell the list oozing off of them, which frankly, was one of the worst things about super scent, you practically smell everything. Bella and Mike, as well as a third girl who I didn't know that was with them also saw the now crowd around me and went back to their respective teams.
Just like that, gym class went on for another 30 mins until it was the end of class. We all changed back to our regular clothes and started to head off for lunch, which was obviously in the cafeteria.
Because Mike and Bella knew each other from the incident in gym class, we three headed off to the cafeteria together.
"Hey Bella, I know you don't like sports, but you don't have to swat the ball away like a bug , you could have given poor Miley here a concussion."
I joked as Bella rolled her eyes while Mike just chuckled as he paid no mind to the earlier incident.
"Well book brain, you know me and sports don't mix but enough about me, what about you? How can you dunk so well?"
Bella asked curiously as she never saw a real life dunk in person and I just pulled one off effortlessly.
"I don't know, maybe I'm naturally gifted?" I just gave a vague response not hinting anything superhuman.
She just shrugged as we enter red the cafeteria and went to get our food. It was a classic buffet style as I've read about where you pick your own food and sit down and eat. I just shrugged as me and Bella got ourselves a sandwich and a yogurt while Mike got himself a Pepsi and a burrito. Mike was popular, so we just followed him to the table as I saw a familiar Asian kid talking to another person and the girl from gym class. When we reached the table, Mike pulled out the chair for Bella while I grabbed another chair from an unused table and sat down. I could tell Mike had the hots for Bella from his subtle glances and the gesture he did right now but I didn't know what to do. Obviously, I treated Bella as family and saw her as a sister but I didn't know how she viewed me and plus I had no right to interfere in her romance life, so I said nothing.
Mike started talking to Eric while I saw him visibly flinch when he looked at me. I just gave him a friendly smile. Mike sat on the chair, not before Tyler came in, pecked Bella on the cheek and pulled Mikes chair from under him making him fall before running away laughing. Mike, visibly pissed ran after him while Bella was still feeling uncomfortable from that kiss. I looked at her worryingly but when she gave me a reassured smile, I knew it was ok. The girl next to me, who Bella told me was Jessica, started to talk to us.
"Haha, oh my god, it's like first grade all over again, you guys are the shining new toy. I don't think I've introduced myself, I'm Jessica."
Jessica introduced herself as she looked at me like every other girl in this school does, full of lust, great.
"I'm Derek, Bella's cousin, a pleasure."
I introduced as she looked surprised.
"You're Bella's cousin? So does that mean you're from Arizona as well?
She asked, genuinely curious this time.
"No, I'm from Canada, I moved down here only recently."
I replied and before she could ask another question, another girl with a camera came in and snapped a picture of me and Bella, surprising us both. Eric, as usual looked scared at what she had done.
"Sorry about that, I needed a candidate for the feature."
The girl said as she looked at Eric confusingly.
"I-I don't think that's a great idea Angela, these guys are new after all, I'll try finding something else."
Eric said and he took it as his cue to leave as he ran somewhere else, probably running away from me. I chucked at that.
"Yeah, I apologize, me and Bella want to ease into school here instead of being front page in the newspaper."
I said trying to erase the awkward atmosphere that was between us.
"That's ok, guess we'll just run another editorial on teen drinking."
Angela said with visible disappointment on her face.
Bella then suggested something about eating and swim team, but I tuned out that conversation as I was starving and couldn't wait to dig in to the sandwich. Just as I was about to bite in, I smelled something that immediately put me on guard as I looked around trying to find the source.
There was no way I could forget the sweet, sickly smell that those leeches possessed.
There were vampires here, and by my nose, more than one.
I was now on guard to the max as I didn't know if it was the Volturi who found me or it was nomads. No matter the case, there were too many humans here and it could be a blood bath or worse, our world exposed if we fought here.
I finally turned my head to the source and I saw 5 pale teenagers coming into the cafeteria. Bella seemed to have noticed them as well as she asked who they were.
Apparently, they were the Cullens, a family that moved in a few years ago from Alaska. Jessica started to list the names of the group as they watched walked in hand in hand with another. Jessica said that they were all together, probably their mate, and said it was weird.
I tuned out that convo as I listened to their quirks and when I saw the blond guy with his pixie looking mate, I could tell that he was resisting the urge to feed on the humans here.
It was a feeling I knew all too well as it was how I was a year ago when I stopped feasting on humans.
I could tell they could hear us with their super hearing as they smirked when we just listed their quirks. When the last one came in, he, like the rest of his family smirked when he heard his quirks that Jessica said and went to join the table with his family. He was observing us as I suddenly felt something probing my mind. I immediately used my spiritual pressure to block the mental invasion before trying to block Bella's mind as well.
I knew that one of the vampires used their blood gift of mind reading and looking at the confusion the pretty boy had, which I learned his name was Edward, it was probably his doing. For some reason, my spiritual pressure didn't cover Bella so I tried again and it failed again. It was impossible for someone to block my pressure.
'Unless they were a shield'
I thought as I looked at Bella again realizing maybe Bella was a shield.
I couldn't think more as the bell rang signifying the end of lunch. I didn't eat my sandwich so I just took it with me as I thought to myself.
'If they're vampires here, then my plans for a peaceful life will have to be changed depending if they feast on humans or are vegetarians. Alaska they said they moved from? Guess I have to call Ben again."
I thought before moving to my next class.
A/N: I didn't get to edit this chapter so just tell me where the mistakes are and I'll try to fix them.
Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I kept rambling in this chapter about the first day and suddenly I had to work all week for this chapter.
Well here you guys go and again sorry for the wait.
