The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

Fritoria lashed out with another spell. Only this time her mana wasn't able to enter the area of control I'd created. Wyatt's dragon body had grown to be nearly double it's original size. I was in pain, but I could still move. I shot toward her with my massive jaws open.

Clamping down on nothing but air. Fritoria had already moved out of range of my attack. My wings twitched in irritation as I turned to follow her dodge. I wouldn't be able to shapeshift while my body was bursting with the collective added power of three dragon kin. Therefore shrinking to fit into the space behind the pillars was out of the question for the time being, but who said I needed to shrink to get behind the pillars?

I whipped my tail around with enough force to obliterate all of them in a single swing. Ethan's blue scales flashed in the corner of my vision as he rushed into the tunnel to stop the lizardmen from rushing to the priestesses aid. Savannah rose from the ground them. Testing her own hybrid body cautiously. Her red scales glinting in the dim light.

Black streaks on the scales seemed to give her red scales more of shine. Her clothes were mostly destroyed by the transformation, but the difference in her strength was amazing to behold as she rushed to aid Ethan. Each of them were able to take on a lizardman one on one, and Ethan actually seemed to have his opponent on the run. The priestess attempted to attack me with another spell. I struck at the weak points in her mana, and broke her spell before it could fully form.

I growled at her. My teeth vibrated against each other. A reverberating feeling I was more accustomed to then the quiet growl Wyatt was normally capable of. I dragged my talons through the hard rock a few times as I prepared to launch a barrage of attacks at her. I was about to move much faster then this body was used to.

My heart rate picked up with each drag. It was almost impossible to stay still while increasing my heart rate in such a manner so the simple motion worked two fold for me. The priestess seemed to recognize what I was doing, and she honestly looked worried about it. We were sparing partners when I was still fairly young. She probably recognized that I was getting ready to do something.

Had she been in her original dragon body I wouldn't have stood a chance, but in this stolen body of hers she didn't stand a chance. She might have equaled Wyatt's strength before, but now she didn't stand a chance. My control of mana made it impossible for her to launch a magical attack. I knew that much. I just needed to outpace her, and my overwhelming physical power would crush her like a bug.

I pushed off the stone floor with my full strength leaving behind gouges where the talons on my hind legs dug in. Everything except for me was moving so slow that it seemed to be in slow motion. I slammed my talons down into the priestess while she was still trying to move away. Cutting one of her arms off, and drawing fleshy bleeding lines through flesh, and bone. Opening her chest like a bad can opener.

Blood poured from her body in a slow torrent as I slashed again with the other hand. Bones broke, and the gaping wounds on her chest became nothing more then a chest full of mince meat with random fragments of bone left behind. Her struggling heart beat, and attempts to breath were now visible for all to see. I turned, and picked up Jax as he struggled to get to his feet. The cave was shaking, and the stone cracked as the shockwave from such a large creature moving so fast hit the unstable walls.

This was one of the reasons I preferred to move slower. I rushed through all the lizards rushing down the tunnel at full speed. Ethan, and Savannah both sensed my movement, and borrowed my power to keep up as I rushed up the tunnel. My speed far outdid what any normal creature my size would be able to do. I disliked how big the priestess had probably insisted the tunnels should be.

She really had been trying to recreate the dragon race here. How distasteful. The number of lizardmen at the entrance of the temple told me that they really did worship that horrid creature. We wouldn't be able to fight them all with the spell beginning to fade. I could feel that Jax had already fallen out of sync with my power, and was beginning to revert back to being an ordinary human bonded.

He'd been somewhat useless in this fight since he'd spent most of the spell trying to fight the transformation, and the rest of it just trying to stay on his feet. I was already starting to shrink back down. Ethan was still resonating with my power well. He would last a while longer. Savannah might last another five minutes.

There was no point in hiding what I'd done down there.

*"I have killed your priestess," I snorted matter of fact, "She was no messenger of the gods, and proved to be too weak to oppose a mere mortal creature like myself."

The silence that followed was deafening. The lizardmen started dropping their spears one by one, and taking a knee.

*"We acknowledge your strength great one," a lizardman with wings thumped his chest.

I smirked slowly. I'd thought they might react this way. Their society seemed to be formed around dragon values so strength ruled above all. Spoils go to the victor. I chuckled to myself.

*"How best can we serve you?" the winged lizardman continued.

*"The truly strong require no servants," I flicked my tail in a self satisfied manner, "I would however like to request that you learn to coexist with the human settlement. They are my allies, and I would prefer for them to be treated well when I leave this world."
