Tales of an Otherworlder

As the school building was burning down, Winsor couldn't help but think back on how everything went wrong. It was during the last lesson when a sudden quake hit the school and the labs exploded into flames. His last class was not so far from them and they quickly tried to evacuate as the school manual said when the guys he thought to be his best friend suddenly tripped his foot. Everyone was panicking and they were too scared for their lives with all the smoke and flames spreading to notice one of the average kids fall amidst the chaos. He sprained his foot and failed to stand up immediately. "Flock, the hell? Its not time for this, help me up!" "Tsch," Flock said as he scornfully looked down at Win and proceeded to throw his heavy bag at his head and knocked him out. After that, he couldn't remember much and woke up to the whole room ablaze and the room filled with toxic black smoke. Due to his coughing, he couldn't tell if it was him or the building that was shaking violently. In his coughing fit, he didn't realize the roof cracking and falling down towards him. It was at that moment that a floating screen showed up in front of him, --- Welcome to the magical world of Ornia --- Crash!

New life?

Winsor couldn't believe that the doctor he was staring at at the moment was actually a human. The closer he looked the more he could notice some abnormal features. His long ears weren't props or some costume but were actually real. The man though looking middle aged, sounded much older than his looks would suggest.

"Calm down I'm sure you must be confused right now. You were in an accident and we managed to heal you to full health," the doctor said as he turned to get him a glass of water. He wasn't very tall but still stood a bit taller than average at about 6ft.

Winsor also realised that even though he knew what the doctor was saying, he could really recognise the language they were speaking. He was trying to wrap his head around the situation when he thought of something.

'Maybe its a world of Elves? Or maybe some kind of Elf kingdom or something?' as he touched his ears and noticed they were also long but not as pointed as the doctor's. He was starting to wonder what a world of elves would be like and if they had magic like the screen he had seen earlier had mentioned.

In many RPGs he had played elves were a beautiful race that loved nature and had affinities towards nature, wind and life. They made great healers and archers but also often had excellent mages but not as many as the humans due to their relatively small population size. If he was also an elf, that meant he could also live much longer than he could have in his previous life.

POV Doctor

As Winsor was on a tangent over thinking his current situation, the doctor looked at him with his out stretched hand with a glass of water. He was wondering if the boy in front of him was really ok since he had barely said any words and was acting strange.

He was a healer in the town of Rarden which was in the northern region of the Praxis kingdom. The boy he was treating was one of the many poeple that were involved in accident when the Earl's son was casting third class magic and it went out of control and flew towards the town. The town isn't small and is closer to a small city with its tall walls to keep the people inside safe.

The spell cast by the Earl's son was a long range one and it destroyed a few houses and leveled them all. Thankfully, some of them were empty but there were a few with people in them. The people were angry at the Earl for his son's carelessness and some merchants even decided to cut business ties in fear for their safety.

Magic had five classes with third magic being exclusive to the average mage that had tens of years of experience in both combat and studies. The Earl's son had neither and had bought the spell of a wandering merchant. He and his friends decided to cast that spell together which made it possible to cast magic above their current ability. Since they were all novice mages, the spell didn't take long before flying out of control.

The boy in front of him was one of the victims of the spell that hit about 5 houses. He was the only one that survived in his house since all the others that were in there with him either died before they could get help or died in the infirmary. Most of the people that had been in the other houses were rather unscathed but they were sent to the lord's mansion anyway and later presumed dead for some reason.

The doctor sighed at all this madness and placed the glass down on the table beside the bed. The boy who looked no older than 8 was still seated quietly with a myriad of expressions on his face. First it was fear and shock then it turned to confusion and finally a tinge of hope and maybe excitement.

"There was an accident that caused a spell to hit your house. It caused it to collapse and sadly it killed your family, I'm sorry for your loss" the doctor said expecting the boy to break down in tears yet he just turned to him with a confused look on his face.

He felt pity for this little boy that couldn't even understand what just happened to him. He couldn't imagine this kid that had a loving family just yesterday would have to go to the grueling streets or the overcrowded orphanages.

"I don't know if you remember but your name is Keith Basileus, we managed to salvage a few of your belongings. from your house" the doctor explained to the boy, half suspecting partial memory loss.

"Keith? huh, " the boy said softly. The doctor heard it and it made him sure that the boy had lost part of his memory.

"Yes, your name is Keith, we tried searching for relatives but couldn't find any so you'll basically have a new life from now on," the doctor responded to the boy. "Don't worry though, the city lord, Earl Grant Rarden is going to help you. "

He continued to explain how the whole incident was due to the Earl's son who had already been punished, and how his house and family were destroyed. He expected anger and tears but none of them came from the little boy that eerily just stared at him as though he was just telling a story.

"Either way the Earl should be here soon, I understand you must be confused and sad but please show respect to him, he has quite the ... personality." the doctor said finally without realising that the nurse he had sent out had just returned.

"Quite the personality huh? What do you mean by that Doctor Threen? Anything you'd like to tell me" said an older looking man that had just entered. He was wearing an impressive looking suit with a red coat decorated with golden ornaments. He had auburn hair with strands of grey running through it but his ears looked like those of a normal human.

"Earl Grant, oh, I didn't see you there, haha, I meant to say you have an amazing personality, yes very amazing" The doctor said while panicking. Threen knew that the lord was rather strange and heard rumors of screams escaping his manor at night time. He really didn't want those screams to be his.

"Well enough of that, we'll get back to it later," Earl Grant said to Threen who was trying to lie to save himself. He didn't really care but just wanted to tease the doctor but this didn't show on his face as it was stone cold.

"Is he the only one?" Earl Grant asked while approaching the bed with the boy in it.

"Yes, unfortunately his family died and the rest were already sent to you. I'm sorry you had to come all the way here." Threen responded while pulling himself together and accepting his fate.

"What a tragedy, well it can't be helped. Hello Keith, as this doctor has already told you, I'm Earl Grant Rarden. Nice to meet you" Earl Grant said while looking into the boy's eyes that had irises that looked more like a yellow orange.

POV Winsor

He stared at the man who had just walked in and introduced himself as an Earl. He and the nurse had normal ears meaning that this couldn't be an Elven world but maybe the area had many of them. This put an end to his earlier tangent since he now did not know what to expect.

"Hello Earl Rarden, its a pleasure to meet you too" Winsor replied. After the doctor's explanation, he realised that he was in a tough position since he didn't have a home or anyone to take care of him. As the doctor was explaining he took the liberty of exploring his body subtly so that others didn't notice. He was glad he was still a guy with his third leg still where it was supposed to be but it and his hands were much smaller. He came to the conclusion that he was either really small or just young but settled with him being young since his voice was not as deep as it was in his previous life.

"I still don't really understand what's going on but the doctor said you'll help me right?" He asked expectantly the Earl in hopes that he would at least get some money to survive and pay off the doctor.
