Chapter 17: Slaves Are Common in This World?

Morning came, and when Louis woke up, he saw Fen stacked on top of Jay, snoozing of peacefully. "Weird," he thought, how can they still look so exhausted after a good night's sleep? He also found a couple of silver coins on the desktop. "They must have done something," thought Louis. He really wanted to wake up Jay and ask, but seeing him fast asleep, Louis couldn't make himself to wake Jay up. He finished his own breakfast and checked backed on the two. Fen had changed position and was now using Jay as a massive hug pillow. Louis proceeded to go on with his day, careful not to wake the duo up. After taking a steamy shower, the duo were still asleep, so Louis decided to try and improve on his breathing.

His unique way of casting by using music caused him to heavily rely on his lung capacity, if he couldn't circulate air fast enough, he could easily run out of breath. And in a fast pace fight, it is essential to move while casting. The only ways that he could cast at the moment were by singing or by using his soul weapon. He tried to cast spells by clapping, but the efficiency of the usage of mana and the power of the spell were very bad, thus making clapping unviable. After training his lungs for approximately three hours, Fen and Jay finally woke up. With a stretch and loud yawn, Jay said, "Is it time for lunch?" With his sleepy eyes, he saw a smiling Louis that was emitting fierce killing intent. "Where were you and Fen out last night?" asked Louis, with daggers shooting from his eyes. Jay sobered up immediately, "I took him out on a hunt." he said, with a shaking voice. With a smile, Louis said sarcasticly, "Why wasn't I invited on your "hunting trip"?" Nervously gulping down saliva, Jay replied, "You were asleep, and I didn't want to wake you up." "I let you off the hook this time, but don't you dare sneak out again," said Louis, emitting a powerful aura. Fen was on the sidelines, pretending to enjoy the already cold breakfast. During a slightly awkward lunch Jay told Louis about the entrance exam, they both decided to give it a try. The exam will be held three days later, so they decided to explore the part of the capital they were in. Jay handed the pouch of money to Louis, so that he wouldn't waste all the money he "earned".

Walking down the street, Jay noticed something odd. The past few days, he was to focused on his temporary goals that he failed to notice. On the street, there were humans and demihumans, but oddly enough all the demihumans had either metallic collars on their necks, or small metallic shackles on their ankles. "Appraisal," he casted.

"That sounds terrifying," said Jay telepathically. "Can you free him?" replied Louis, pointing at a panther demihuman. "I could, but I don't see the point in doing that," said Jay. Louis was frustrated with Jay's denial at first, but after second thought, he knew Jay wasn't wrong. The country's laws allowed slavery to exist, so what can he, not even coming from Corinth, have anything to say on the manner. But when the trio walked further into the more shady part of the city, he saw a man stepping and spitting on werewolf slaves. Jay was fine at first, but Fen couldn't sit still while his kind was being bullied. He transformed into his werewolf state, biting the man's feet. Furious, the man ordered his slaves to attack Fen. At first, the werewolves resisted, but the collar was slowly constricting, suffocating them. They had no choice but to attack Fen, who was still biting on to the man's leg. Jay didn't want to interfere with the treatment of slaves, but Fen was his reverse scale.

He concentrated on the mana surrounding the collar, his eyes lit up as he felt the mind link that enabled the user to constrict the collar on will. He casted Telepathy, forcefully creating a mind link with the mind link that already existed. He could feel the man's mind, ordering the collar to shrink. Jay ordered the the collar to expand, the two commands conflicted each other, and it all came down to the battle of sheer will power. But with the added stats of Fortitude from his contracted beasts, how could a normal man possibly compete. The collar loosened up immediately and started to stretch. Jay's Fortitude was so high that the all the collars shattered.

Freed from the enslavement, the werewolves immediately stopped attacking Fen, they instead turned toward the man. Baring fangs that were as sharp as daggers, the two werewolves pounced on the man. Jay quickly grabbed Fen, who was still in a frenzy, with his arm. Feeling Jay's embrace, Fen slowly calmed down, he slowly shapeshifted back into his human form. Jay covered Fen's eyes and ears as the werewolves ripped the man into shreds. Jay and Louis turned away from the gory sight of the man being ripped apart live. After the screaming stopped, Jay turned and saw two werewolves with blood dripping down their claws. The two werewolves seemed to be in a weird state, with killing intent still pouring from their bodies even though the man was already dead. "HOW DARE YOU TAKE ONE OF OUR CHILDREN AS A SLAVE!" said a werewolf, fur bristling with anger. Louis was going to summon his weapon when Jay pulled out the white tooth the chieftain handed him. The two werewolves instantly calmed down, "Sorry for the misunderstanding, demihumans are only treated as a slave in this country," said one werewolf, bowing his head. "It is OK, escape before the guards come," said Jay. Thanking their savior one last time, the werewolves shapeshifted into a human and ran off. About five minute later, guards arrived at the scene. They saw Jay, who was wearing a tattered tunic, kneeling down besides the man's bloody corpse, weeping. "What happened here?" asked a guard, pointing his spear at Jay. "He was ripped apart by those werewolves, the collars somehow malfunctioned," said Jay, between sobs. "Trash demihumans again, killing lowlives, unnecessarily increasing our workload. Why didn't they kill you, killing you would clean one extra lowlife out of this city" snickered a guard, looking at Jay with disdain. They left the scene, laughing as they thought the man that died was someone close to Jay. The guard who laughed at Jay felt a slight tug as he slipped and fell. The other guards laughed at him when they felt a slight tug on their belts. Their belts were all unbuckled at the same time, their pants fell down, exposing them in their underwear. They quickly pulled their pants back up, too embarrassed to find the suspect. They left quickly, afraid that someone had saw them.

After the guards left, Jay burst out in laughter. "I love my new skill," he laughed, almost running out of breath. Fen leaped into Jay's arms from a nearby tree, and Louis walked out from the corner of the street. Louis was once again speechless of his friend's immature behavior, and was surprised of Jay's acting skills. Fen however, looked at Jay in admiration, "Daddy, how did you do that?" asked Fen. "A magician never reveals his tricks," replied Jay, making a cloud of dust explode in a dramatic way as he made a hushing gesture. Louis facepalmed on the sidelines, worried about Fen's future. Being with Jay was certainly not a good influence.

They spent the rest of the day walking around the streets, with Fen trying almost every food they come across. With a full stomach, they got back to the inn. "What a fulfilling day!" exclaimed Jay, sitting down on the couch. Only two days left until the entrance exam, and Jay wasn't going to waste these precious two days.
