Chapter 18: Hunting is Too Much for a Lazy Man!

Morning came, and Fen was brimming with energy. He jumped up and down on Jay, waking him up. "Alright, alright you little energetic furball, I will take you out on a trip so calm down," said a sleepy Jay, yawning as he softly pushed Fen off him. After finishing their breakfast, Jay, Louis, and Fen headed out into the outskirts of the city. The guards this time couldn't care enough, they let the trio pass without even batting an eye.

Jay contacted Wen via mind link, and in about a couple of minutes Wen appeared. Wen, two meters tall in height and a thick muscular bones, had rotten flesh hanging on to its body. Even though his flesh was all rotten, he didn't have a putrid smell, instead a weird sensation which can only be described as the feeling of pure death could be felt around him. He emitted a deathly aura, withering away life around him. Wen was careful not to put Louis or Fen under his aura's influence, but controlly it was not easy. Fen's fur bristled under the uncomfortable pressure. Feeling the lingering feeling of death around him, Jay looked at Wen surprised. The feeling of death was too powerful to be naturally emitted, so it must be a new Passive skill. And judging from the fact that he was covered in the aura of death, he knew Wen didn't have the means to control it yet. So Jay activated Telekinesis, creating mental barrier around Louis and Fen. He let a small amount of the aura seep in, exposing them to very tiny amounts in order to get them to get used to the aura.

They set off, with Fen leading the way using his shapeshifted wolf snout to track any signs of prey. Fen could smell tons of different scents of different animals. But when they closed in on the prey, Wen's aura would leak out, scaring away the prey. However, Fen was not at all frustrated, he believed that the prey that would get frightened of the aura were not worthy of being hunted. They kept searching around the woods, hoping to come across something worth tracking and taking down. They came across a clearing, with signs of a bloody battle. "Yesterday," said Fen, as he sniffed the clotted blood. Jay could feel the vitality contained in the already dried blood, such power could only come from a peak lieutenant-grade grade monster or perhaps even a colonel graded one. Such powerful creatures intrigued Jay, and the thought of two of these monsters fighting managed to make his blood boil. Jay was lost in his own thoughts until he heard Fen bark. Jay went into full blown alert as he focused on what Fen was barking at, but he only saw trees and bushes with no signs of any beasts. "What are you barking at?" asked Jay. "I picked up a scent, very strong one!" said Fen, as he wagged his tail that somehow appeared due to joy. Seeing Fen's excitement, Jay couldn't help but also felt quite pumped up. He looked forwards to slaying, or perhaps better, taming a strong beast. Fen and Jay started to follow the scent, completely leaving Louis and Wen behind. Louis sighed as he tried to catch up with the two, but with the two's somehow increased speed, he couldn't even if he wanted to. Seeing that Louis couldn't keep up with the fast pace, Wen signaled Louis to hop on his back. Carrying Louis on his back, Wen started to speed up, catching up on Jay and Fen in no time. They arrived at a more sandy and arid part of the forest, almost reassembling a desert. "Weird, the scent ends here," said Fen, who was a little bit sad because the trail ended here. "It's OK," said Louis as he started to hum a tune. Louis started to pick up on a trail, following it to a small sand dune. Right before they got close to the small hill, Louis stopped them. "Inside the dune, I can't sense it's size," said Louis.

"There is only one way to find out," said Jay as a feather appeared on his hand. He always conjured a Feather of Curses when he had excess mana, so feathers containing half his mana were not a luxury he could not use. He controlled the feather telepathically, igniting it on the sand dune. The whole sand dune shook, as it revealed a large serpent, with two chicken-like feet and wings sprouting behind its back. "Appraisal," casted Jay.

The snake charged forwards, with every flap of its wings giving it a speed boost. It charged at Wen, who it deemed to be the most dangerous to to the deathly aura surrounding him. The three meter snake rammed into the undead head on, sinking its fangs into the Wendigo. Wen slammed his elbow into the side of the snake's jaws, stunning it. But to Wen's surprise, the other side of the serpent came around and lashed out at Wen again. Wen could feel his strength drain slowly due to the snake's venom, but thanks to Wen being a undead, it was no big deal. Wen activated Touch of Undead, and a tug-of-war of strength began. What strength Wen lost would be sucked back by his touch, and at a much faster rate. The snake knew it couldn't win against the undead, so when Wen relaxed a bit, it swung it's powerful head right into Wen's abdomen, knocking Wen back. It immediately sprang towards Jay who looked like an easy target. Big mistake, it slammed onto the ground as if it hit an invisible wall. It felt like thousands of chains were wrapping around it, tearing it apart. "This really drains my mana and my willpower," thought Jay, as he imagined thick metal chains constricting the snake. Fen didn't want to miss out on the action, so he activated his skill, Bestial mode. His pupils turned into long fiery slits, staring at the bondaged serpent. He rushed forwards, slashing the snake with his daggers. Unfortunately, the poor quality of the dagger's tip proved to be unable to pierce the tough scales of the serpent. So instead of aiming at the heart, Fen slashed upwards, tearing through the serpent's wings. The snake writhed in agony as it looked at Fen in hatred. Wen grabbed hold onto the serpent's front head and bit into it. It sank its fangs into the snake's head, then activated Devour, the snake tried to escape by swinging its body. It could feel its whole body being suctioned in by a strong force, tearing through its muscle fiber and tissues. After a whole minute, a that was left of the snake was it's scaly skin and skeleton. Jay picked up the scaly skin of the serpent and tried to tear it with all his strength. It didn't even bulge, it was light and robust. When Jay tried to stab it with Fen's dagger, it not only failed to pierce it, the tightness of the scales managed to disperse the force. "This is good for making armor," thought Jay, as he began to gather the resources. Wen was sitting down, digesting the power he just gained from devouring the snake. Wen's rotten flesh seemed to heal a little bit, covering up some parts of it's exposed bones. Fen was happily munching on the raw wings of the serpent, satisfied of the course of events. Louis was watching on the sidelines, on the look out for anything that could stalk them. Finishing collecting the loot, Jay stood up as he wiped the sweat of his forehead. "This is too much work, I want to head back to the inn," said Jay.

Feel free to suggest any monsters you would like to see Jay, Louis, or even Arthur and Connor encounter next.
