Chapter 29

The kitchen appliances were also older, the counters covered with worn, beige Formica that matched the walls and cabinets. If it hadn’t been for the bright yellow curtains on the windows Guy thought it would have been depressing.

“Now for the basement,” Kurt said, taking them down.

It was obvious from the fake oak paneling and the matching shelves along one wall that it had, as Kurt had told them, been used as a recreation room in the past. Now it served as a storage area for some used chairs, three bed frames with tired-looking mattresses, a table that was missing one leg—and a lot of dust. There was utility room and a small lavatory off the main room.

“Don’t know why we kept that,” Velma said with a shake of her head, pointing to the table. “Nostalgia, I guess. It was our first dining table.”

Kurt rolled his eyes at her then said, “So, what do you think, kids?”

“I think it’s the absolute best,” Dani replied emphatically. “At least compared to where we’ve been crashing.”
