Chapter 28

“That’s why you’re…Okay, never mind. Not my business.” Kurt slanted a look at Shadow. “He as well-behaved as he seems?”

“Yes, sir, as long as he doesn’t think you’re a threat to us,” Guy said. “So’s Ghost”

“What, you got a puppy in your backpack?”

Guy shook his head as he opened the pack to let Ghost out.

“Oh, Kurt, she looks just like our Cinders did.” Velma waggled her fingers at Ghost, which was all the invitation the kitten needed to jump into her lap.

“How many kids do you have?” Dani asked.

“Two, and they’re not kids. Not anymore. Our daughter lives in LA, Kurt Junior’s in Atlanta.” Velma sighed, shaking her head. “We haven’t seen them since the pandemic hit.”

“Not in person, anyway,” Kurt added. “We do the Zoom thing but it’s not the same. Still, it’s better than nothing. I got a question, speaking of the Covid. Are you kids healthy? A lot of the homeless are catching the crap and some of them are dying since there’s no way they can afford a doctor, or a hospital.”
