Only the most pathetic fall to the bottom of the abyss, but every legend has crawled their way up from that very place. ... Damien is a death row prisoner. As he counts down his last days, to his surprise, he is bought by the Sigma company. The Sigma company brought Damien and a few others up from the brink of death, only to toss them down once again. Now Damien and his new less than agreeable companions must fight increasingly ghastly monsters for their freedom and immediate survival. After they clear labs by the skin of their teeth, the Sigma company gives them strange injections. To Damien’s shock, these injections gave them superpowers he could only dream of. This was his chance for freedom, for all of them to start anew. Only problem? There was more to these injections than any of them could imagine. Was this really a chance for freedom? Or was it a one-way ticket to Hell?
The air in the room suddenly grew heavy. A giant creature had forcefully torn apart the gate. The claws that it used were pitch black, with countless veins bulging out that were similarly black as well.
As the gate was forcefully peeled back, it revealed the face of the creature. It had red eyes, while its teeth and gums were fully revealed, as it did not have any lips to cover it. To top it all off, it had two horns protruding out of its head, just like what demons were said to have.
It let out another roar, while the gates creaked ominously. Damien shook his head and forced himself to focus on the two giants that were still among them. The one that Killian had dealt with looked like it was going to bleed out soon. Though it was still able to move around, he figured trying to deal with it now was a waste of time.
As for the other one, while it was more or less crippled, the thing looked quite far from death. With that in mind, Damien rushed towards it, ignoring the crippling pressure he felt from the creature breaking down the gate.
It was quite easy to get on the giant's back, after which Damien directly plunged the katana through the giant's head. Large amounts of disgusting thick black blood spewed out, but there was no time to focus on that.
The giant below him began struggling rather intensely, but it was hard to do so when it really only had one arm it could move around freely. Nonetheless, it swung around with that arm indiscriminately.
Though Adonis was shocked, he was still able to wake up soon enough and get out of the way. With that, the monster wasn't really able to attack anyone and began slowly bleeding to death.
However, the other giant also had to be dealt with too.
The creature had broken through the majority of the gate and would be able to get through more of it just a few moments later as well. Upon peeling back the door, it revealed some of its body, which was composed of what looked like a large mass of black sludge.
That wasn't to say that the bodies of the normal creatures weren't like that as well, but in this case, it actually looked like flowing viscous liquid.
Damien took his attention off the creature and focused on the other giant. It clearly seemed like it had difficulty moving around, probably because its injury was pretty bad. However, it seemed to be moving with a clear goal in mind.
It was gradually making its way toward Killian, who was currently crumpled up in a ball after being slammed into the wall. Damien called out to Adonis.
"Help him out!"
Adonis furrowed his brows but nodded. After a second of hesitation, he tightened his grip on his katana and pulled it back. Then, he launched it forth making it almost seem like he fired a bullet.
With a clear bang, the katana slammed into the side of the monster's head, causing it to tilt to one side. However, it still wasn't enough. Damien frowned when he saw this. The giant was more or less good as dead, but it was still struggling to its very last breath.
Doing more damage to it probably wouldn't help much, so...
"Killian! Move your ass!"
Hearing that, Killian seemed to shake off some of the daze he had felt. Looking up, he saw the giant, which caused his eyelid to twitch.
The monster reached towards him, but with a painful groan, he sprung off to the side, much to his body's dismay.
It was at this moment that the gates were fully smashed through, letting the star of the show enter.
It would turn out that the thing actually had four arms as opposed to two. It just didn't end up using them to break down the gates. As for its body, it actually looked relatively humanoid, though at first glance it seemed as though it was covered in a thick layer of black sludge.
Yet when one had a few moments to look, they would realize that sludge was actually directly part of the creature, like the skin of a human.
Both Damien and Killian were caught up with a giant, thus having their own problems to deal with. Though all they really had to do was stall out for a little while and they would end up dying, they couldn't act recklessly as they would end up crushed by the giants' death throes.
Zenos cursed under his breath as he fiddled around with his sniper rifle. After missing twice, he pushed something on the sniper rifle which disengaged the empty magazine. He then desperately reached into the backpack for the other one almost like he was a severe drug addict with some stuff inside one of the pockets.
At the same time, Adonis took the light machine gun off of his back before pointing it toward the monster with a frown. He was sweating slightly, and just from the look on his face, it was fairly clear he didn't have faith that the bullets would be able to do much.
"This is completely fucked!"
With those words, he pulled on the trigger, releasing a large number of bullets, all of which hit simply because of the big target. But he ended up stopping not too long after. Not because he had run out of bullets. In fact, he had basically just begun firing.
It was because while the bullets penetrated through the thing's body, the tiny holes would mend almost immediately.
Adonis set the light machine gun down after realizing it was useless in this scenario.
"Shit!"
Zenos saw all of this and felt his heart drop, but he decided to put faith in his sniper rifle that was able to kill so many other big bad things before.
The creature rushed forth, opening its mouth to let out another roar. As it did so, what looked like black blood was gradually spilling out from its mouth.
Zenos took in a deep breath, calming down his nerves as he hurriedly put the magazine back into the rifle and aimed right at its head. His eyes widened all the way and became bloodshot.
Then, he pulled the trigger.
With a clear bang, a bright flash of light came out of the muzzle, and the large caliber bullet slammed straight into the demonic creature's head. The force was clearly there, as its head was thrown back, and the creature ended up stumbling backward.
Zenos gradually let out a breath, feeling relief that the shot hit.
Yet, right as it seemed as though the demonic creature would end up falling on its back, it just stopped. Then, a few moments later, it gradually lifted itself back up. Quite a bit of black blood was spilling out from its forehead, but it was still very much alive, and it was even angrier than before.
Seeing this, Zenos' expression distorted greatly. When he took a closer look at the wound, he saw that despite how strong his gun should've been, the bullet hole was relatively small.
The corner of Zenos' lip twitched.
"What the fuck is this..."
Killian jumped up, dodging over a giant's arm, which slammed against the wall. From there, the giant attempted to raise its other hand, but shortly after it did, the giant collapsed. The same thing happened on Kairos' side.
Killian's gaze diverted towards the demonic creature that was staring them all down and frowned rather intensely.
"Do bullets not work on this damn thing?"
Adonis, who had retrieved his katana, held it out as he slowly backed up.
"It seems that way."
Zenos smiled bitterly.
"You seem to be implying that melee weapons are effective."
Damien let out a dry chuckle.
"Well, it doesn't seem like we have many other choices now do we?"
That was when each of the four arms of the creature suddenly extended outwards, one to each person. Each of the arms seemed to have a mind of its own, rushing forth like a wolf.
Essentially everyone was surprised, but that didn't mean they were caught off guard. All of them had already gotten used to this kind of lifestyle.
Kairos, Killian, and Adonis all blocked it with their blades while Zenos held his sniper rifle out in front of him. Successive slams rang out one after another, and all four of them ended up getting thrown backward.
It turned out that this thing was several times stronger than even the giant.
Damien coughed up blood as he stumbled.
Killian cursed several times.
"I... tried to cut through its arm, but I could hardly do it. We have to run away."
Damien took another look at the creature, and his eyes narrowed further.
"...Shit. We have to fight it."
After getting a closer look, he realized that there was a black box inside its chest.
The research results they needed were embedded in the body of that thing.
