Jane looked at her parents in disbelief. The one who would be most heartbroken and scared in case of a child's accident was her, and she didn't want this. They didn't care about the child's condition, they didn't care about her swollen face from being hit, they didn't care about her dignity, and they demanded that she kneel down?
"Mom—" She exerted all her strength to call Elizabeth, hoping she could persuade Dad, but Elizabeth turned her face away.
She looked at John.
His eyes were cold and indifferent, as if her life and death and honor had nothing to do with him.
Her relatives, her husband...
Indescribable disappointment and pain filled her body.
She stood still, unmoving.
Emma was furious, kicked her knee hard, and she fell to the marble floor with a thud, her knees throbbing with pain.
This was too embarrassing, too shameful.
She tried to stand up, but her shoulders were firmly held down by the kindergarten teacher.
Emma cursed on the side, saying she was a wicked girl who was not worthy of seeing the noble Miss John and should not have hurt her.
She struggled but couldn't break free from the four hands. She couldn't help but tilt her head to look at John. Was he pleased to see her embarrassed and in pain?
Was that why he was so indifferent?
Was that why he turned a blind eye?
She didn't know what had happened. She remembered when she was in the third grade of elementary school, she participated in the Mid-Autumn Festival party and sang on stage. She sang beautifully and many people liked it, but a mischievous boy threw paper balls at her and said she sang horribly.
Later, John found out about this and went to beat up that boy and forced him to apologize to her.
There were many similar incidents like this when they were young.
When they were young, he was most afraid that she would be wronged or bullied. If she even had a hint of tears in her eyes, he would come to comfort her.
These used to be sweet memories.
But now, the sweeter the memory, the more painful it is.
The hospital was bustling with people, and many people stopped to watch this scene.
A young nurse recognized Jane and whispered to her colleague next to her, "Isn't she the singer Jane? Why is she kneeling here?"
"It seems to be related to the child in the emergency room. I heard that she has bad behavior and has probably done something wicked again..."
"Who is the handsome man standing next to her?"
Amid the criticism, the door of the emergency room suddenly opened.
Mark walked out, and John rushed up to him. "How is Jill?"
Mark said with a relaxed face, "She just got a little scared, and there's not even a scratch on her. Don't worry."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this.
The kindergarten teacher who had been holding Jane down relaxed her grip. Jane took advantage of the opportunity to stand up and stumbled to Mark's side. "What about Jack? How is he?"
She was extremely anxious, and her words sounded like they were coming out of a broken speaker. If she hadn't been so close, no one would have been able to hear her.
Mark had just seen her kneeling and glanced at everyone present. "Can't you go in and see for yourself?"
Jane bit her lip and was about to go in when Jack was pushed out. The doctor beside him explained to her, "The child has a mild concussion, a minor fracture in the elbow, and a serious abrasion. He needs to rest for a while."
Jill was unharmed, and Jack was okay. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"Mom and Dad-" Jill was carried out by a nurse, the little girl had stopped crying and stretched out her arms for Jane to hold her. John's face turned cold as he took her from Jane and she turned to look at her.
"Mom, what happened to your face?" Jill spoke without reservation, asking directly.
Jack woke up at this moment and saw Jane's red marks on her face. He recognized them as fresh finger marks.
He sat up fearlessly and asked, "Who hit my mom?"
No one expected that the two young children who had just been scared would both notice the injury on their mother's face, especially the boy. Although he was weak and immature, he had a fierce look, as if he was going to fight anyone who hurt his mother.
Mrs. Land sneered disdainfully, "John, take Jill home."
John carried Jill out.
Jill lay on John's shoulder, looking at her mother standing by the hospital bed. She didn't know where she was wronged, tears streaming down her face, drop by drop, falling on the man's broad shoulder.
John glanced at her and felt his heart break.
After they left, the kindergarten staff followed suit.
Emma Elizabeth didn't leave in a hurry. Instead, she followed Jane and her son into the ward.
"He's not John's kid, but he talks like he's so right. Where did you learn to raise him like this?" Emma questioned in the ward.
Jane was angry when she heard this in front of the child. Her beautiful eyes looked coldly at Emma, and her momentum inexplicably weakened.
Elizabeth's eyebrows furrowed and she pulled Emma over. "Let's go, she's too strong for us to control anymore."
"Mama, Grandpa and Grandma are bad." Jack couldn't hold back any longer when they left. He was about to cry when he saw his mother being treated unfairly.
Jane hugged him gently, smiled and whispered, "It's okay, Mom still has you and Jill."
At least the two babies still loved her.
Jack sniffled and held back his tears. While he held back, Jill had already been crying for over half an hour.
John and Mark took her to a restaurant for dinner, but the little girl cried harder and harder in the private room, making the two grown men frustrated, especially her father John, whose brows were knitted into a knot.
"Tell me, why are you crying so much?"
Jill sobbed, tears streaming down her big watery eyes, "Daddy is bad... Daddy didn't protect mommy... Mommy's face... got hurt."
The little girl stuttered and explained the reason behind her crying.
John and Mark fell silent instantly.
Perhaps this is blood relationship. Even though Jill was not raised by Jane, even though she had heard many bad things about her mother, she still loved and protected her.
Mark glanced at John, whose expression was slightly stiff, and sneered, "The Emma couple are not good people either."
For the sake of not implicating Jane's family, they turned a blind eye to their daughter being beaten and forced Jane to kneel. These parents were simply outrageous.
John reached for a cigarette in his pocket and was about to light it up when he realized Jill was there.
He held the cigarette between his fingertips and silently watched the little girl stop crying. After a few seconds of silence, Jill jumped off her chair and snuggled up to him, shaking his arm with her small hand, and timidly spoke up, "Daddy, Jill misses mommy, can you bring mommy back home..."
His heart clenched suddenly.
If she hadn't betrayed them, they would have been a happy family of three.
It was her who ruined their family and their happiness.
"Let's eat first." He frowned, and Jill pouted before finally sitting down to eat.
