The Academy was buzzing with excitement. Word of Rayne's fight had spread quickly, and now, the once-overlooked orphan had become the center of attention. Some saw him as an ally, others as a threat, and a few were still undecided. Among those watching him closely was Sasuke Uchiha.
A few days had passed since Rayne's clash with the Uchiha student, and the atmosphere at the Academy had shifted.
Naruto stuck to Rayne more than ever, bombarding him with questions about how he'd learned such incredible moves. Rayne kept most of his answers vague, not wanting to give away the true extent of his Copy Talent. He liked Naruto, but even his over-eager personality was becoming a bit much.
Still, Naruto's enthusiasm was infectious.
"Hey, Rayne, you're gonna show me some cool moves after class today, right?" Naruto said with a grin, practically bouncing as they walked through the Academy's halls. "Maybe you can teach me that fireball thing!"
Rayne chuckled. "We'll see, Naruto. I've got some things to work on myself."
Before Naruto could continue pestering him, they entered the classroom and took their seats. Iruka-sensei stood at the front of the class, preparing the day's lesson.
"Alright, everyone, settle down," Iruka called out, getting the students' attention. "Today, we'll be working on team coordination exercises. You'll be grouped into teams of three for the rest of the afternoon."
Rayne's ears perked up at that. Teamwork exercises? This would be a good chance to observe how the others fought and worked together. He still hadn't interacted much with Sasuke or the other prominent students, and this could give him some insight into their strengths and weaknesses.
As Iruka-sensei started calling out names for the teams, Rayne listened carefully.
"Team one: Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji. Team two: Kiba, Hinata, and Shino. Team three…" Iruka paused, looking at his clipboard before continuing. "Sasuke, Naruto, and Rayne."
Rayne raised an eyebrow. Of all the possible combinations, he hadn't expected this. Working with Naruto was one thing—he was unpredictable but had a good heart. But Sasuke? The tension between them was palpable, especially after Rayne's fight. Sasuke had been watching him more closely than anyone else, and Rayne could feel the rivalry brewing between them.
Naruto, of course, was ecstatic. "Yes! We're gonna be an awesome team, believe it!"
Sasuke, on the other hand, said nothing. He just stood up from his seat, his eyes narrowing slightly as he glanced at Rayne. It wasn't a look of disdain, but more of a challenge—a silent declaration that Sasuke was watching, evaluating, and would not accept being overshadowed.
Rayne didn't mind. If anything, Sasuke's competitive nature would make this exercise more interesting.
The team coordination exercise took place outside, in a spacious training field near the Academy.
Iruka-sensei explained the rules: each team would compete in a mock mission to capture a flag guarded by a few Academy chūnin. The objective was simple—work together, use strategy, and retrieve the flag as quickly as possible.
Rayne, Naruto, and Sasuke stood together, forming an awkward triangle as they prepared for their turn. Naruto was excited, bouncing on his heels, ready to charge in headfirst. Sasuke remained calm and analytical, his eyes scanning the field and taking in every detail of the terrain and their opponents. Rayne stood in between, watching both of them, already thinking about how to approach the situation.
"So, what's the plan?" Naruto asked, glancing between his two teammates. "I say we just run in and take them by surprise!"
Sasuke scoffed. "Idiot. If we do that, we'll get caught in an instant. We need a strategy."
Naruto frowned, crossing his arms. "And what do you suggest, Sasuke? You think you're better than everyone else, don't you?"
Sasuke didn't respond immediately, instead turning his gaze to Rayne. "You're the wildcard here. What do you think?"
Rayne wasn't expecting Sasuke to defer to him, but it made sense. Sasuke was testing him, wanting to see how Rayne's mind worked. Fine. He could play along.
"Rushing in would be suicide," Rayne agreed, glancing at Naruto, who groaned in frustration. "But we don't need to overthink it either. The key is distraction. Sasuke, you can create a diversion with your Fireball Jutsu. Naruto, your unpredictability can keep them busy. I'll use that opening to get close and grab the flag."
Naruto scratched his head. "Wait, so I just run around like a maniac?"
Rayne smiled slightly. "Exactly. It's what you do best."
Naruto grinned, seemingly satisfied with that answer. Sasuke, though silent, nodded in agreement.
The exercise began.
Sasuke was the first to move, forming hand seals quickly and unleashing a controlled fireball towards the chūnin guarding the flag. The flames forced them to scatter, dodging the intense heat. At the same time, Naruto charged in from the opposite side, yelling loudly and causing a commotion. True to form, he drew their attention almost immediately, darting around wildly.
Rayne stayed low, his movements precise and controlled as he made his way through the brush, closing in on the flag. His Copy Talent was already analyzing the terrain and the movements of the chūnin, identifying the best moment to strike.
As one of the chūnin moved to intercept Naruto, Rayne saw his chance. He darted forward with lightning speed, his feet barely making a sound as he sprinted toward the flag. His fingers brushed against the cloth, ready to grab it.
But then, a flash of steel.
One of the chūnin had anticipated his move and hurled a kunai straight at Rayne. Time seemed to slow down as Rayne's instincts kicked in. His Copy Talent reacted, allowing him to dodge the kunai by twisting his body at the last second, the blade grazing his side but leaving no real injury.
Without missing a beat, Rayne grabbed the flag and leaped backward, narrowly avoiding another kunai. He landed beside Sasuke, who had been watching the entire exchange.
"You got it," Sasuke said, sounding almost impressed, though his tone remained neutral.
Rayne nodded. "Let's finish this."
Naruto, realizing they had succeeded, let out a victorious cheer, charging back toward them. The three of them stood together, holding the flag as the chūnin acknowledged their win.
After the exercise, Iruka-sensei gathered the teams for feedback.
"You all did well," he said, nodding to the group. "Especially you, Team Three. Rayne, your strategy was sound, and the execution was excellent."
Naruto beamed, clearly proud of their performance. Sasuke remained quiet, though Rayne could sense the wheels turning in his mind. This exercise had shown Sasuke that Rayne wasn't just another nameless orphan—he was someone worth watching.
As the students began to disperse, Sasuke approached Rayne, his expression serious.
"You're good," Sasuke said, his voice low. "But don't think I'll let you stay ahead of me."
Rayne met Sasuke's gaze, unflinching. "I wouldn't expect anything less."
The unspoken rivalry between them solidified in that moment. Sasuke saw Rayne as a challenge, a competitor who could push him to greater heights. And for Rayne, Sasuke represented the pinnacle of natural talent—a benchmark for him to surpass.
Naruto, oblivious to the tension between them, slung an arm around both of them, grinning from ear to ear.
"Man, we make an awesome team!" he said, laughing. "Let's do this again sometime!"
Sasuke pulled away, muttering something under his breath as he walked off, but Rayne couldn't help but smile at Naruto's enthusiasm. Despite everything, the blonde knucklehead had a way of lightening the mood.
That evening, Rayne sat on the roof of his small apartment, staring out at the village below.
The rivalry with Sasuke was just beginning, and Rayne knew that their paths would cross again, not just in training but in more serious battles ahead. But there was something else on his mind—something darker.
His Copy Talent had been growing stronger each day. It wasn't just copying movements and techniques anymore. He could feel it expanding, reaching out, trying to understand more complex things—emotions, thoughts, even the essence of life itself.
What would happen when he pushed it further?
Rayne clenched his fists. For now, he would control it. But deep down, he knew that the day was coming when he would have to face the true power of his gift—and the consequences that came with it.
The wind rustled through the trees, carrying with it the sounds of the village settling down for the night. But Rayne couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming—something that would change everything.
And when it did, he would be ready.
