The match nearing its end

Inside the Honey City Gym, the battle for the badge continued to rage on.

Lukas took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. He didn't want to make any mistakes due to excitement.

Analyzing his opponent, he comes to the conclusion that Wingull probably doesn't know any Dark or Ghost type moves.

There are none of these types of moves in the Wingull-lines natural move set, at least.

He also doubts that this Wingull would put so much time into learning moves that are effective against neutral opponents.

Normally, after having a solid foundation with moves of their own typing, Pokemon would prioritize moves that are effective against opponents with a type advantage. (Grass-type Pokemon learning Water or Rock-type moves to counter Fire and/or Flying-type Pokemon.)

Turning his attention back to the ongoing battle, he sees both Wingull and Abra constantly move back and forth, testing each other.

Lukas, "Shock Wave"

Becky, "Protect into Air Slash"

'It's good that I took Wingulls speed advantage away with Psych Up, but a fight at an increased speed won't be in my favor.'

While both Pokemon on the field are (mid)Bronze-Rank, one should not forget that Becky is in reality a Junior Elite-Rank trainer, meaning she has deeper bonds with much stronger Pokemon than Lukas has.

Even if those bonds don't give a trainer superpowers per se, it is a well known fact that aside from an increased lifespan, a trainer's general resistance to Pokemon moves and reactions are way above average humans in every aspect.

Lukas, "Use Protect and follow it with confusion."

Becky, "Don't ease up, use Swift."

*boom*

Once again, both Pokemon ended up in a stalemate.

Becky, "That's enough, if long range moves don't work well, have to switch things up a bit."

Apparently understanding something from her words, Wingull began to gain height.

Becky, "Now use Aerial Ace."

Lukas; "Bombard it with Shock Wave!"

Performing a gravity boosted Aerial Ace, Wingull began to evade the incoming electric currents one by one while heading straight for Abra. Of course, the never missing property of Shock Wave made it that the currents that missed their target simply turned around and followed the attacking Wingull.

'What is she planning?'

Her opponent is an Abra so she should be more than clear that even in the best case scenario Wingulls attack would still miss because Abra could simply teleport away.

'Should I use "it" now, or should I gamble?'

Lukas, "Teleport away once Wingull gets close, then use Hypnosis."

He decided to gamble in the end, knowing that the most difficult fight was still up ahead.

Abra and Wingull both followed their trainer's orders and just as Wingull reached a dangerous distance to her, Abra used Teleport to evade the attack.

In the instance Abra began to glow in the light of Teleport, Becky used her heightened reaction speed to search the battlefield for the spot Abra would appear at.

Her eyes lit up, noticing a pale magenta light begin to glow near the field's corner to Lukas right.

Becky, "NOW use U-Turn." she shouts while pointing at the spot Abra appeared at.

Just a second before hitting the ground, Wingull lit up in a light green light before making a sharp turn, shooting in the direction of Abras new location.

Lukas clenched his hands into two fists. He was hesitating whether to go back on the defensive or continue with his gamble.

'NO, I can't.'

Lukas, "Use Flash before blocking with Protect."

Blinded by Abras Flash, Wingull had to reduce its speed a bit in order to make sure it still managed to successfully land the attack.

*boom*

In the end, the attack landed on Abras Protect, which managed to barely hold out, at least for now.

*crack*

Just a moment into their stalemate, Abras Protect began to crack, showing signs of wearing off.

*buzz*

Becky, "Damn, unlucky."

Lukas, "Yes! Abra Psychic, use everything you've got."

Hearing the buzzing sound of Abras earlier Shock Waves, both Becky and Lukas realized that Wingull hadn't been fast enough.

*shatter*

*Boom*

Shortly after Wingulls U-Turn managed to break Abras Protect, and it seemed the attack would finally reach its intended target, the combined power of multiple Shock Waves, U-Turn and Psychic resulted in a small explosion that resulted in a large cloud of dust.

A few seconds later, the dust cloud subsided, showing a clearly hurt Abra sitting in front of a fainted Wingull.

"Wingull is unable to continue the winner is Abra, does Challenger Lukas want to switch his Pokemon?"

Though the chances for Abra to beat a (high)Bronze-Rank Pokemon in her current state are minimal, Lukas still had a reason for keeping her in.

"Deputy Becky, please call out your third and last Pokemon."

"Alright, you'll finish it then, Scyther!"

"Scyther!"

Lukas, "Abra, start with Calm Mind."

Becky, "Let's make this quick, X-Scissor."

Lukas, "Teleport away, then Calm Mind again."

Becky, "Stop, switch to Air Slash."

Lukas, "Endure it, make sure you finish your Calm Mind."

*boom*

Becky, "Get close."

Seeing Abra finish her second Calm Mind, Lukas feels it is time to finish the setup for Riolu.

Lukas, "Use Disable, then make sure you also utilize "it"."

Despite not knowing what "it" stood for, Becky had no intention of letting them succeed regardless.

Becky, "X-Scissor, end it before they can finish what they want to do."

"Scyther!"

*Boom*

Having his long ranged Air Slash disabled, Scyther used X-Scissor without a problem, knocking Abra out.

Of course, what neither Scyther nor Becky noticed was Abras eyes lighting up in a faint magenta light just before her opponent's move connected.

"Abra can no longer continue, the winner is Scyther, Challenger Lukas, please call out your third and last Pokemon."

"It's time, Riolu!"

"RIO!"

Riolu seemed ready and excited at finally getting his turn, despite the disadvantage its typing would bring.

Lukas made the decision to challenge this Flying-type gym initially because Pokemon Types only get more and more important the stronger they get, meaning he would rather get this badge while still fighting Bronze-rank opponents.

Lukas, "Riolu, begin with Agility."

Becky, "Get close with Quick Attack, fast."

Scyther quickly closed the distance.

Lukas, "Dodge and counter with Screech."

Evading Scythers attack with relative ease, Riolu releases a high-pitched scream.

Lukas, "Keep your distance for now."

Knowing that their opportunity has yet to come, Lukas urged Riolu to stay patient.

Becky, "Attack with Acrobatics next."

Lukas, "Use Aura Sphere to delay its movement."

*boom*

A well-timed Aura Sphere from Riolu took Scythers momentum, so although its attack hit in the end, the power behind it was reduced.

Lukas, "Use the attack to open more distance between both of you."

Hearing the order from his trainer, Riolu let Scythers successful attack fling him away from his opponent.

Lukas, "Good, now Swords Dance."

Becky, "Use Acrobatics again."

She increasingly got the feeling that Lukas was waiting for something yet even thinking back to the prior two battles she didn't know what it could be.

Since her instincts honed through years as a trainer told her something was going on, she decided to trust them and bring a swift conclusion to this fight.

'There it is, finally.'

Seeing a phenomenon about to form above Scythers head, Lukas got ready for the final confrontation.

Lukas, "Use Thunder Punch, full offense, don't hold back."

Riolu, understanding that the time has come, suddenly stopped running backwards and with a stomp to the ground took off in Scythers direction in a full sprint, his right paw beginning to shine bright yellow.

Becky, "Block its attack using X-Scissor then-What?"

As she was giving orders to her Pokemon Becky finally noticed the magenta light above Scyther that quickly grew to form a shadowy figure.

Becky, "When?"

Recognizing this as the effects of Future Sight and watching as the shadowy figure strikes Scyther in the back, Becky is confused.

Becky, 'So that has to be the "it" he was talking about.'

Scyther was taken by complete surprise, the attack not only hurt very much, courtesy to all the Calm Minds Abra used, but it also stopped Scyther from taking any evasive maneuver against a powered up Riolu.

*Boom*

Admiring Scyther who still managed to stay standing after that last combo, Lukas gave the final order for the battle.

Lukas, "Finish it with another Thunder Punch." "Riolu!"

*Baam*

Unable to gather its wits, Scyther was also at the receiving end of the second Thunder Punch, this time it couldn't stand up anymore.

"Scyther is unable to continue, Riolu is the winner. Deputy Becky has no more eligible Pokemon to fight with, thereby the match is over, the winner of this Honey City Gym-challenge is the challenger Lukas Emerald."

"YES!" "RIO!"

Happy about their victory, Lukas and Riolu started to celebrate together until they noticed Deputy Becky approach them having just recalled her Scyther.
