The time it all began

'Silent.'

'Eerie.'

'This is the world of souls, where I could finally acquire my power! I am excited; with this I will rewrite my whole life…'

A toothy smile blossomed on a young man's face as he watched the formation of ball-like blue lights dancing through the void. They looked transparent, ethereal, as though they were the most beautiful condensations of smoke that held ghastly features.

These were none other than souls!

The young man was enthusiastic and excited.

He naturally knew what was happening.

This phenomenon was called "awakening".

It was a supernatural event that washes over humans during their youth, putting them into hours, even days of sleep, and one could say even comas that they could never awoke from.

In this world, about 30% of the world population experiences this event in their youth, determining the very future of the lives, testing whether or not they were worthy of being a superhuman. They could wake up without nothing, a pathetic ability, or become a real superhuman.

But the negative things aside, this was a turning point of anyone's life no matter how insignificant they might make their lives out to be.

The reason?

The most important point was that they could develop powers, abilities that goes beyond the measure of normal.

Theoretically, these dreams would activate the soul, and call one's dormant powers forth to reality. One will become a superhuman, which the world dubbed as "dreamers".

What caused it?

Nobody knew.

Still, it was a part of people's lives since the very beginning of time. A part of this world's very nature of things.

As expected, this was a very big deal.

If somehow, someone experienced it, they had to be protected and developed.

But it had to be said, most people could not really wish of even dreaming this experience, as only some, the luckiest ones people should say, of the population was entitled to the whole opportunity to become a superhuman, 30%. This 30% were the only ones who had the power to do it, or the blood to experience it.

Obviously enough, these select group of people were not normal. They were the wealthy, the higher-ranked people of the social caste, and over time, only those who had their blood could learn powers, and experience the 'awakening', while everyone else remained normal people.

As for these normal people, the rule was if they never had the genes in them, it will remain a dream forever. This was the rule that haunts them for their entire life, from generation to generation.

Some people with marvelous that can grow claws out of their fingers, shoot fireballs out of their palms, spew beams out of their mouth like a dragon, and soar to the skies like birds, and engulf a whole forest into fire. And all they could do was stare at them like they were Gods, and beg for them to save their lives, once a problem that they could not solve appears.

How lucky could someone be to have these kinds of abilities?

Well, they were obviously very lucky.

What were the chances of a normal person developing powers? Well, it was not impossible, but it was very unlikely.

Hence, instead of dreaming about such things to happen, the normal Joe was better to think of surviving, making sure they could earn a job in the future, put food to the table, and support their family so they could live a safe and happy life.

A very boring approach. Sad ordeal. Passive and loser's mindset. But it is what it is.

The sad reality of the world, probably of all worlds, was everyone could never be born equally, that the world was unfair.

This was the world Moon was born.

It was not just a weird world, but also a world of unfairness.

While some kids live inside warm luxurious houses and wear good clean clothes, some lives under a bridge, begs in the streets, and wore ragged clothes for the next several years without ever learning what a shower looked like.

Though, Moon, the MC, wasn't exactly underprivileged. In fact, he was the exact opposite and rich as hell.

He was a noble and his family had no problems financially. He always had the opportunity to wear nice clothes, get a tutor at a young age, eat expensive foods three times a day, and live in a big house with a garden, tenths of rooms, and with butlers and maids.

Furthermore, he wasn't even ugly, nor could he be called dumb in general. In addition, he wasn't ill, physically and mentally. He was a boy with a nice future set in stone.

The only problem was his attitude. He was too lax, complacent, lazy, and irresponsible. As you expected, he later became an underachiever, despite his overflowing talent and too many opportunities.

When he was young, he was actually known as a genius of his generation as he proven his talent to become a dreamer. As results said, he could become a monster among "dreamers" (superhumans) of his generation, yet he hardly cared.

Until the world taught he hardly cared of, permanently took the most important things in his life.

Money? No, he never lacked money, but he never really saw wealth as an important thing in life.

House? His family was a noble house, and they had many businesses and rest houses where he could visit and go unannounced, and he would be treated like the President of the Country.

What about his potential or talent? His potential and talent was a part of him, and no one could ever take that from him, even if they killed him.

Looks? No, too. His face had always resembled a handsome model advertising the best of skincare, and his hair was as flawless and silky as always. He never had scars on his body as well, nor did he lost an eye or an ear.

What the world took from him was his family, all those whom he cared about.

And now, he was ready to make those who took their breath pay for it.

With his dark crimson eyes, Moon gulped as his gaze went down the golden ancient cup cradled in his palms.

The cup was like a treasure found in the deepest lore of some undiscovered dungeon or something belonging to a royalty of the distant past or something that belonged to a rich supernatural collector.

One look at it, he could tell its expensive value that could make pawnshops go crazy. On the sides, it was intricately riddled with the design of snakes and skulls that bore no aesthetic flaw in his perception.

As for the liquid, it was covered by a thin layer of eerie grey gas, not hot or cold, as if it was just an illusion hovering on top of the dark glistening liquid that rested like calm dead water in some haunted sea.

Moon could feel his emotions tremble and well out of his face.

Once he drank this cup, his life would finally change.

He wouldn't be a normal person anymore, but a supernatural existence that could bend the laws of nature at will.

Though, as he would find out later, his powers will turn him into something else, a creature only found in fairy tales.
