Memories of an Old Lane

"You only love me because I'm the person who got your past girlfriend's heart." Tears rolled down on her cheeks. She clutched on her left chest as her heart was aching. No, it's not her heart. She just borrowed it. She borrowed it from the girlfriend of the man she loves the most. He tried to reach for her but she just shoved his hand away. He never wanted to hurt her. He never wanted to make her cry. "Don't touch me! If you want her heart again, I will give it back to you!" He slowly shook his head, feeling his voice got stuck in his throat. He wants her to stay by his side but why can't he voice it out? "Fuyu—" "I regret loving you. I wish I just died that day."

"Don't forget the seatbelts. Buckle up." The twins' father smiled at them and Makoto helped her by putting the seat belt on like what he used to do. She looked outside the windows and saw him standing at the side while watching them leave the hospital. She waved her hand and called him.

"Sensei, let's go to a museum someday!" She smiled widely and he smiled back, nodding his head and waving his hand. It can't be denied. She is the carbon copy of his late girlfriend.

"Why does she need to look exactly like you?" He muttered while walking back inside the building. He smiled at the patients greeting him and when he arrived in his office, he flopped himself on the couch and closed his eyes for a few minutes.

"Sho, what do you think? Does it look good on me?" She showed him a royal blue satin dress and he nodded while smiling widely. They were out shopping. They will attend a party that weekend and she decided to have the same outfit colors with him.

"You will be the most beautiful there, Angel." He gently cupped her cheeks. They have been together for three years and five months from now, and they will celebrate their fourth anniversary. He is planning to propose to her but he is still looking for the right ring.

He stared at the ring inside the small velvet box while reminiscing the old happy memories he had with her. He closed the box and placed it back inside the drawer. It's been forty-nine days since the day she died from a car accident. He visited her grave earlier and brought her favorite flowers. He met her parents as well and they advised him to start moving on. How can he do that? He spent years with her. Though he also knew that it was for his sake. They are also heartbroken for what happened to their only daughter.

"Just.. let me love you until my heart gives up." He mumbled with his eyes closed. He can't move on for now. Perhaps someday but not now. He heard the doorbell ringing, so he stood up in front of his desk and walked out of his work room.

"It's been a while." He let out a soft chuckle when he saw a plastic bag full of beer cans. He let her inside his apartment and closed the door behind them.

"What brings you here? You had a fight with your husband again?" He asked and she scoffed, placing her bag on the couch.

"Not really. He will come here to join us. He is just finishing some papers." She said while opening the boxes of food she bought from the stalls. There's a huge night market a few kilometers away from his place, so she passed by quickly for the food.

"I can't drink too much tonight. I might get a call from the hospital." He said and she smiled. She knows that he is busy because of his profession. Though he is busier this time.

"Just drink. We will take care of your things here if you get a call." She said as she gave a can to him.

She noticed that his apartment is getting messy. It is because his late girlfriend used to clean it when he is on call. She was also the one to bring him food to work. She was a bookstore owner but now, it is being handled by her older cousin. Her family can't close it down because the money used to build it up was from her own pockets. It is one of the best memories she left in them.

"I will look for a housekeeper. You need one. You can't say no. Let's keep your place clean and organized, okay?" She said and he just laughed. Indeed, he needs one.

"I have been your best friend since we were in cram school. I know you, Yamamoto Shogo. You can't fool me." She squinted her eyes and he opened the can of beer.

"One of my patients looks exactly like her. She is the younger version of her." He suddenly confessed to her. He took a long sip from his can and she stared at him.

"She is also the one who got her heart. I don't know if fate is playing me but it is just too much of a coincidence. She is five years younger than me. She is a student. Why does she need to look exactly like her? For what? To keep me in love with her? Will she bring her back from the dead?" She just listened to his pain. She patted his back gently while trying to control her tears.

"Sho, we know you missed her so much already. We also missed her. We can't live in the past, right?" She hugged him gently while crying. They were supposed to have a drinking session and not a crying session.

"You know how much I love her, Gia. You know it." He cried in her arms. She nodded and tightened her hug around him.

A few moments later, Riku finally arrived. He didn't miss the crying session since he was already at the doorstep when they started crying. He didn't get a call that night, so they finished a few packs of beer cans. Gia picked up the empty cans and cleaned up everything before getting some blankets to protect the two men from the cold. She looked at the displayed photos on the dividers and smiled faintly.

"We miss you so much already, Fuyu." She whispered. On the other side, Makoto's twin sister suddenly sneezed while opening some gifts she got from her classmates.

"Is it cold?" Makoto asked and she pouted, nodding her head while holding the new journal planner she received from her closest friend in university.

He turned the air-conditioner off and opened the small window instead. The night breeze is much better than the air-conditioner. He sat beside her and wrapped a blanket around her shoulders. As the older twin, he is happy that his sister is back home. She got a small paper bag and opened it. She smiled widely when it contained two keychains. She gave the large chick to him while she got the small one.

"It is so cute. Coni gave these to us and I know the large one is for you." She chuckled softly while showing him her keychain. She attached it to her bag, feeling excited that they will attend university again.
