Memories of an Old Lane

"You only love me because I'm the person who got your past girlfriend's heart." Tears rolled down on her cheeks. She clutched on her left chest as her heart was aching. No, it's not her heart. She just borrowed it. She borrowed it from the girlfriend of the man she loves the most. He tried to reach for her but she just shoved his hand away. He never wanted to hurt her. He never wanted to make her cry. "Don't touch me! If you want her heart again, I will give it back to you!" He slowly shook his head, feeling his voice got stuck in his throat. He wants her to stay by his side but why can't he voice it out? "Fuyu—" "I regret loving you. I wish I just died that day."

"Are you going to leave me like the way she left?" He asked and her eyes were ready to spill tears. She forced a smile and shook her head. How can she do that? She did everything to continue her life. Why would she waste her second life?

"Is that what you always think, Sho? That I'm going to leave you? If I will leave you, I should not have accepted her heart. Are you expecting me to act like her?" She asked but he didn't answer her questions.

"Do you want her heart back? If you want it back, I'm sorry. I will not give it back to you." She walked out of the bedroom and completely left his house.

Her phone vibrated and she saw that he was calling. She wiped her tears but she cried more when someone pulled her wrist. He hugged her tight, whispering his sorry countless times. She clutched her chest tightly and started gasping for air. He quickly got his phone to call for an ambulance. She can't breathe properly and she didn't bring her breather. The ambulance arrived and they brought her to the nearest hospital.

"It's a sudden lung failure. She has two more days left to live." The doctor said and he felt like his world completely shut down. He is also a doctor but why didn't he see this coming?

He walked in the hallways, lifeless while still trying to grasp on the reality. He shifted his gaze on her. A ventilator is attached to her mouth while sleeping in the hospital bed peacefully. He sat on the chair beside her and held her hand gently. It is a little cold. Their friends and her family arrived and until now, he doesn't know what to do. The doctor repeated what he said to him earlier. They did everything for her to have a normal life. She did have one but it was too short. He tightened his grip on her hand, burying his face on it as he started crying. She just told him earlier that she will not leave him. What happened to their plans? Her family can't blame anyone or even him. They know that they did everything and he will keep on repeating those words even though he is feeling numb already.

She slowly opened her eyes and realized that she was back in the hospital. She smiled faintly while staring at the ceiling. The sterile but heavy scent of the hospital is not new for her. She moved her fingers and felt that someone was holding her hand. She tried to move her head and she saw that it was him. He lifted his head and smiled weakly. She has been asleep for a day already. He shifted from his spot and kissed her forehead.

"I love you, Fuyu." He whispered while crying silently. She nodded her head while staring at him. She is feeling bad that she can't say those words back to him.

"I know you love me, too. I just know it." His voice cracked and more tears fell from his eyes. She started crying as well as she knew that she would not last any longer.

"Look. I bought this for you a day before our museum date. It is a shame that I only showed this to you now." He said while holding the small velvet box he kept for four years.

He pulled out the silver bands from it and wore the smaller one to her finger. He wore the remaining one and forced a smile while looking at it. Why does their story need to end up so quick and like this? She lifted her hand and tried to caress his hair. She always wanted to cut his hair short but she never had the chance to do it. She gestured to remove the ventilator, knowing that if she would just continue on fighting, it would be more painful for her. He called for a nurse to remove it. He has no energy to use his medical knowledge on her.

"Sho.." She smiled but he could see how difficult it was for her to breathe without the ventilator. He kissed her forehead a few more times.

"Sho, I love you.." She was supposed to say those words in front of the altar with him but there is no more time for her.

"I love you more, Fuyu.. Always and forever." He whispered, leaning closer to kiss her lips lightly. She can rest eternally now that she learned what he feels for her.

He removed all the tubes attached to her body and carried her out of the hospital. He hailed a cab and went to the museum whereas it is closed because it is already late at night. He looked up and saw a lot of stars in the night sky. He sat on the stairway and settled her in his lap while hugging her gently. She smiled softly and rested her head on his chest. It will be her first and last stargazing with him.

"I'm happy.. that you became a part of my life." She mumbled and he kissed her forehead. When he thought that his late girlfriend's last words were the most painful, he was wrong about it.

"I wish.. to be your love in our next lifetime." She added, lifting her arm to reach for his cheek. She caressed it gently and he leaned down to kiss her lips.

He felt his phone vibrating. It's been half an hour since her last words and breath. He doesn't have any more energy to cry. He answered the call and told Makoto that they were in front of the museum. The younger one didn't ask any more questions when he arrived. He hugged his twin sister for the last time and they went back to the hospital for the proper procedures. The two men sat on the side while the twins' parents worked on everything they needed to do. They decided to have a three-day proper wake for her before the burial.

"I don't know how this happened but you're diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and it is already in the last stage." He felt like smiling when he heard those. He noticed the symptoms before but he didn't bother because he preferred helping others.

"I don't want to get a treatment, Riku." He said and the older one understood why it was his decision. It's been three months since Fuyu died. They are still weeping for her.

"I understand where you are coming from but think about your best friend. Are you sure you want to leave Gia?" Riku asked and he shook his head. They both know that it will be useless if he will still have chemotherapy. Though it will lengthen his life span for a bit.

"Take care of her. I'm just.. tired. I want to be with Fuyu already." He whispered and Riku let out a deep sigh before writing the results on his medical records.
