Thief

Max couldn't deny what he saw; he had seen plenty before. Despite Lorna's composed demeanor as she casually questioned Max, the situation felt anything but ordinary.

Here they were, two solitary souls sharing a room, and Max couldn't shake off the unease settling in the pit of his stomach.

Moreover, Max found himself in a state of lingering dissatisfaction after the gene Integration.

Seeing Lorna's calm eyes, Max shook his head and said nothing.

Lorna sat down, untied her shoes, took off her jeans, and went into the bathroom. It didn't take long for the sound of water to echo from the bathroom.

After a while, Lorna emerged from the shower.

"You'd better go take a shower first. The hot water supply here seems to have a time limit," Lorna said to Max.

Max nodded and went in to take a shower.

When he came out, Lorna was already leaning on the bed, her fingers wiggling, and coins flowing between her fingertips. Seeing Max come out, Lorna asked, "Are you planning to find the X-Men to deal with the Sentinel project together? It should be enough for your team to have members from our side, right?"

Max shook his head. "Not enough."

"The Sentinel plan definitely has more than one location. Attacking just one won't be enough," Max said as he came to the other side and leaned against the head of the bed, mirroring Lorna's posture.

The conversation stopped abruptly, and it seemed there was no way to proceed.

No one spoke, only the sound of coins circulating in Lorna's fingertips.

Suddenly, a sharp and abrupt moan came from the neighboring room.

The coin fell off with a clatter.

Lorna awkwardly picked up the coin and set it aside. "It's getting late, I'll go to bed first."

"Good night."

"Good night."

They exchanged goodnight wishes and lay down. Lorna waved her hand and clicked, and the light in the room went out.

The room became quieter. The two of them lay side by side with only a pair of quilts between them, and they could feel each other's breath. The voice from the next room seemed to become clearer.

Even if they didn't want to listen, the sound was in their ears.

Fortunately, the voice didn't last long, and the two of them could finally rest quietly.

After what seemed like a long time, Max was brought back to reality by a knock on the door. He got up and opened the door, seeing Esme standing outside.

"How is it?" Max asked.

Esme shook her head. "Nothing, I'll look around tomorrow."

"Well, get some rest," Esme said before Max could fully process the news she had just received. Surprised by the quick update, Max turned back and returned to bed, attempting to catch a few more moments of sleep.

The night passed uneventfully, and Max awoke to the gentle sunlight filtering through the curtains. He found himself still holding Lorna in his arms, the two of them nestled together face to face.

As Max stirred, Lorna slowly opened her eyes, meeting his gaze with a blank expression. After a moment of silent contemplation, she turned away from him and continued to rest.

Maxgot ready and left the room.

Upon returning with breakfast, he found both Lorna and Esme awake, their demeanor seemingly unaffected. After a quick meal, they discussed their plans for the day. With Esme continuing her inquiries, Max and Lorna prepared to venture out, knowing they couldn't rely solely on Esme for information.

"It seems like the atmosphere here is more favorable compared to Atlanta. No one seems to have recognized you yet," Lorna remarked as they walked along the street.

"We're near the port, where there's a lot of movement. It's natural that we haven't been identified so quickly. Plus, we've only just arrived, and we look like regular humans for now. If they discover we're Mutants, things might not be as comfortable," Max explained with a chuckle. "Have you thought about contacting the underground organization here? Do you have any leads or contacts?"

Lorna shook her head. "I know there are underground organizations here, but I don't have specific details."

"We'll need to find out," Max replied determinedly.

As they wandered through the bustling streets, they noticed the vibrant commercial atmosphere and the abundance of street vendors, a quarter of whom seemed to be of African descent.

Legend had it that Florida was once a gathering place for Native American tribes.

"Spare the thief! Stop the thief!" A sudden cry interrupted their thoughts as a disheveled-looking man in a tattered windbreaker, his head concealed under a hood, dashed towards them, clutching a bag of apples.

"Damn bastard, dare to steal my things!"

A robust black man cursed as he chased the perpetrator. Within moments, he caught up, reaching out and grabbing the thief's headgear. The thief attempted to evade by slightly bending over, but the headgear was firmly gripped.

With a forceful pull, the headgear came off.

"Oh my God, what kind of monster is this?"

"The head is actually full of mouths."

"He's a Mutant! Kill him, don't let him escape!"

The crowd erupted in chaos, passionately pursuing the man in the trench coat.

"Mutants are not always welcome here," Max commented to Lorna.

Despite the man's grotesque appearance – with several mouths covering his head, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and even the top – it was clear he wouldn't have taken the risk of stealing if he wasn't in such a dire situation.

As the man's Mutant identity was exposed, hostility from onlookers surged. Lorna was prepared to intervene.

"Come in with me first." Max opened a nearby door and ushered Lorna inside.

Once inside the dimensional space, Max opened a small door.

"Don't make too much movement; just let him escape smoothly," Max instructed.

Lorna nodded, using her control over metal to slow down the movements of the pursuers. With their actions visibly hindered, the Mutant seized the opportunity and swiftly ran away, escaping into a nearby alley.

"Keep up with him."

In the dimensional space, Max and Lorna followed the fleeing Mutant.
