Blink

Mutant Underground Base.

Anxiously waiting, John, Sonia, and the others sat with a woman beside them. She wore ripped jeans, a white close-fitting T-shirt, and a long purple hair shawl. Her eyes were unexpectedly green, with a distinctive purple line at the corner of her right eye. It's Blink!

Despite knowing that Max should be fine, everyone remained worried.

"Huh!"

A door materialized in front of them out of thin air. After a slight flicker, everyone stood up subconsciously, their expressions filled with excitement. The door swung open. Max emerged with Lorna.

"Lorna!" Sonia exclaimed with joy, rushing to hug her.

A collective sigh of relief swept through the group, and John expressed his gratitude to Max, saying, "Thanks for your help."

Max smiled and turned to the woman with the distinctive purple line. She stared at herself as soon as she came out.

"Are you the Sacred Gate? I've heard many rumors about you. My name is Clarice Fang. You can call me..."

"Blink!"

Max interrupted her before she could finish.

"Blink?" Clarice was momentarily taken aback. "Sounds good. Well, you can call me that."

"Thank you for saving her; otherwise, I would have blamed myself." Clarice, or Blink, expressed her gratitude towards Max.

Max nodded, addressing her, "Don't mention it. We can catch up when we have time."

"Sure."

"I'll remove this thing for you."

Eclipse offered to help Lorna, aligning his palm to the neck ring on her neck. With a bang, the neck ring shattered.

Lorna commented, "Max disrupted the structure of the neck ring, but wearing this thing was really uncomfortable."

Destroying the structure inside the neck ring by breaking the double doors on it was a straightforward solution.

"Hey, everyone, come take a look."

From a distance, Sage called out. Everyone gathered around Sage and watched a video playing on a screen. A school suddenly collapsed, leading to an explosion. Panicked students fled, and soon after, the Sentry Secret Service arrived to investigate the collapsed school.

"This happened recently. There might be Mutant Awakening. I'm monitoring their channel and haven't received accurate information yet," Sage said.

"In such an incident, if someone from the Sentry Secret Service apprehends him, it could be troublesome," John remarked. "We need to find him as soon as possible."

"It might be more than just imprisonment. Before I escaped, I heard that many Mutants were sent to concentration camps. They seem to use their variant abilities to perform tasks for them. Once they're done, they might be released, but the credibility of that is questionable," Blink added.

"Concentration camp?"

The atmosphere in the room grew more solemn and grim.

"I'll notify you if I hear anything," Sage announced, turning away to resume monitoring.

Despite the urgency to save people, the waiting continued until there was news. With numerous tasks to handle within the base, everyone dispersed, becoming engrossed in their respective duties. Lorna, intending to change her clothes for an unlucky outing, noticed Max deep in thought.

"What's on your mind?"

"Just thinking about someone who's made a fortune," Max remarked with a smile to Lorna.

Although Lorna doubted that Max had been contemplating this, she replied, "If you feel at a loss, I don't mind being a model a few more times, as long as Sonia doesn't mind."

"What does that have to do with Sonia?" Max casually remarked.

Lorna looked at Max in silence, then turned and left after a moment. Once Lorna left, Blink approached Max.

"Do you have a moment? I want to talk to you," Blink said.

"Go over there." Max pointed to the side and sat on an old sofa. Max glanced at Blink. "You want to discuss Abilities, right?"

Blink was contemplating how to broach the subject, but Max addressed it directly, as if reading her thoughts.

"Yes, my Ability is somewhat similar to yours, so I wanted to talk to you and see if I can enhance it!"

Max smiled gently. "Do you have any plans for the future?"

The conversation took a swift turn, and Blink shook her head. "I haven't really thought about it, as long as I don't get caught again."

"If there's a place like this—comfortable, safe, with hot baths, soft beds, coffee, afternoon sun, and the sound of rustling maple leaves—would you like to go there?" Max asked Blink with a smile.

Blink looked at Max. "Do you know why I was arrested? Simply because I look different from ordinary humans. No job opportunities. I was so hungry that I stole a few loaves of bread from the supermarket. The place you describe would be heaven for me. So, what do you want?"

"You!"

Observing Blink's composed demeanor, Max continued, "Sacred Gate is my code name, and it's also the code name of a team I've organized—a hired team. Are you interested in joining?"

"Only if you let me leave when I want to quit," Blink asserted.

"Sure, you can follow me home in a while," Max suggested with a smile before heading off to find Lorna.

Given that Blink had been rescued by Lorna and John, and Lorna faced consequences because of ther, Max felt it necessary to involve Lorna in the decision. While they wouldn't force Blink to stay, it seemed prudent to seek Lorna's opinion.

Entering Lorna's room, Max explained her intention to take Blink with him.

"As long as she agrees," Lorna responded, her gaze fixed on Max. Suddenly, she posed a question, "Don't you like for Sonya?"

Surprised by the unexpected query, Max pondered, "Why do you ask?"

"At first, you allowed Sonya to stay due to circumstances, but now that you've returned and formed your own team, you are recruiting Blink instead of Sonya? Is it because you dislike Sonya or because you have too many women, and it's inconvenient for Sonia to be part of your team?" Lorna inquired, her eyes scrutinizing Max.

With a smile, Max countered, "What do you think?"

He genuinely didn't feel guilty about the question. Sonia was kind and adept at adapting to the underground organization's life. As a non-combatant, she faced no imminent danger. Given Max's current relationship with the underground organization, having Sonia stay here or join his team made little difference.

Not just Sonia, but even Lorna and John treated Max as an integral part of the underground organization despite his status as an independent mercenary.
