Laura did some findings and finds out the Brooks has a high social party to celebrate their youngest son's birthday in a few days.
The Brook family is very powerful and can be said to be the most powerful in the country, they have three children and the other two are married being ladies and every knows their youngest son is going to inherit their fortune.
Laura has been friends with Edward for a long time but when he confessed his feelings to her in their final year, she told Avan and had to stop being friends with him and now she really feels sorry for rejecting him over Avan
knowing that the birthday celebration is just an excuse to gather young unmarried ladies in the country and pick a right bride for their son so she is sure that every rich young lady will make herself available to attend and even the unworthy ones will try their luck, even those who are looking for a business alliance with them will also be able to present their intentions at the party
Laura's company is more or less in the third rank position as the most influential so getting an invitation to such party wasn't an issue for her at all, although she is not single but she needs to show those who humilate Chris's mother and let them understand what class is.
The day for the party is Thursday and Laura had someone bring Mrs Hugh to a location where they are to get dressed for the party, the both of them wore the dress that has been delivered earlier and had some professionals do their make-up then picks matching shoes and jewelries for the occasion.
The both of them set out for the party about seven in the evening and when they arrived at the party, lots of guests already arrived.
Everyone must be eager to show off themselves to the young prince as they call him and Laura could see lots of ladies flocking around him already
She smiled when she saw how he is struggling to keep them away and searched around with her eyes, she spot Diana and her minors hanging out at a corner and talking in a whisper, she looks away from them and search again to see Mira and a girl who appears to be her friends sitting in a corner with her mother.
Laura has done her research before coming and is sure everyone of them will be there, she even used her connections with the Brooks to make the invitation available to them all, she needs to make them understand that anyone who is part of her family is not to be taken lightly
It took only a few seconds before someone noticed the clothes that Laura and her mother-in-law wore and everyone's eyes is suddenly on them and everyone start to whisper and talk about it, some are even surprised that Laura came to the party
Laura noticing their attention smiled and walk into the crowd to let them give more view of the clothes, the dress is cream in color and goes well with both of them skin.
Everyone looks at the dress on her with jealousy and envy in their eyes wondering why Laura has more luck than them to be born in such wealthy mother and able to wear a masterpiece.
As everyone's attention is turned to them and people wonder who the older woman beside her is, Mira's attention is also drawn to them and she looked at them angrily, she can't believe that after being annoyed by her parents who forced her to come to this gathering she will get to see her enemies too.
She scorned at their hypocrisy and whisper something to her friend, she knows very well the relationship between the both of them when she was still with Mrs Hugh but immediately she left, she stopped her pretense of not wanting Laura to be her daughter-in-law.
"Good for them" she scoffed, thinking that their happiness will not be for long.
Laura, after she is sure everyone has noticed the both of them together and as most of them will have guessed and concluded that she is her mother-in-law, Laura proceed to introduce her to a few higher class ladies and not those that belongs to the lower class
"Laura, it's been so long I last saw you" Edward's mother Mrs Brook said excited to see her and pulled her into a warm hug.
"Aunt, you look more beautiful and younger" she compliment equally pleased to see her
"After you graduated you never showed your face to us here" she remark and Laura apologized with a smile
She has forgotten about a lot of people while dealing with the company and her relationship with Avan, when everyone is so against her and wants her out of the business, Mrs Brook is one of the few who voted in her favour and support her by continuing to do business with them even after her mother's death
"Am guessing this is Mrs Hugh?" Mrs Brook asked to be sure and Laura nodded her head in affirmation, Laura signal to her to greet her
"Mrs Brook, am very honored to meet you in person" Mrs Hugh said excitedly, she can't believe she get to talk to the high and mighty Mrs Brook
"My pleasure, am quite surprised to hear that your son end up conquering our Laura" she said disappointedly.
She has hoped that one day Laura will break up with Avan and marry her son instead but everything about her marriage happened so fast that she did not have a chance to do anything before she gets married to him
Her son still talk about her and insist on waiting for her to break up but now that he has heard that she is married to someone else, he is devastated and finally agreed to an arranged marriage which is why they are having this party to let him find a bride among the young ladies and get married.
"What did she mean by our Laura?" Mrs Hugh thought and looks at Laura then smiles
"We are blessed to have her in our family" she replied and held her hand
"Have you seen your friend to greet him" Mrs Brook asked changing the topic
"I will go to him now, please take care of my mother" Laura said and turned to leave in search of Edward. Mrs Brook, although she is envious but still take Mrs Hugh and introduced her to her circle of friends.
"Hey, birthday boy!" Laura yelled at Edward who is talking to three girls and they turned to see who the intruder is.
Edward, on seeing Laura quickly pull the girls aside and walk closer to her. He feels soffocated having to listen to all their hypocrisy and lies and is happy to finally get a way to flee from them
"Laura!" He exclaimed with a wave of excitement and hugged her before she could say another word. Laura was taken aback but still hugged him in return and the three girls turned away and left angry at the intruder.
"Am sorry for that" Edward told her after the girls left and pull away from her
"It's fine" Laura replied although she feels strange and a bit uncomfortable, it's been long since she last saw him one on one so a hug is definitely not what she excepts from him
"I just wanted to get those girls away from here" Edward explained further
"It's really fine, happy birthday" Laura said and he replied accordingly
"I can't believe you are here at my party, I never see you at this kind of gathering and it looks like you have disappear from the city" Edward said and paused
"Of course I hear about you in the news" he added and Laura smiled
"I have been busy" she simply replied
"Congratulations by the way"
"Yes, thank you" Laura responded knowing he is actually talking about her marriage.
"Your husband? Did you come with him?" He asked again and Laura laughed at his curiosity about her life
"Am sorry for asking too many questions" he apologized
"No, it's fine. Am just surprised at the change, you use to be so quiet and shy" she said remembering the former Edward
"I guess time changes people"
"So, have you seen any girl you like? Your mom told me about the plan to get you a wife"
"She told you that? Gosh!" Edward feels shy that his mother actually told Laura about it
"It's nothing to be ashamed of, come on are you not planning to get married?" Laura asked teasing him
"If you didn't reject me then maybe I would have" he answered
"But am married now" Laura quickly point out and look at him to give her an answer to her question but before he could, they had a noise. Laura turned and saw her mother-in-law.
