Chapter 47
Laura, not sure what is going on, excused herself from Edward and walk to where everyone is gathered to see what has happened and to her horror, Mira is standing in front of Mrs Hugh with her poker face and annoying smirk
"What on earth is going on here?" Laura demanded and stares digger at Mira who act like she doesn't care and rolled her eyes at her
"Mira is just telling us what a golddigger of a mother-in-law you have" one of the ladies answered behind her and Laura turn to see it's Kayla.
"Miss Laura, I don't believe you will be so unlucky to get married into a family like hers who only wants a daughter-in-law for money" a woman from the crowd said with a look of disgust on her face.
Mira looked happy to see that she has been able to put Mrs Hugh in her place even after she stole everyone's attention with her exquisite dress and appearance to the party.
Mira approached her when she saw that Laura is no longer with her and she was with a group of ladies talking.
Mira greeted them all and introduced herself then start to spew nonsense about how Mrs Hugh is from a low background and actually wanted to get her married to her son but when she finds someone more wealthy, she continues to deceive her and lied to her.
She made it up so perfectly that she start to tear up and says she would have gotten married if not for her lies that her son likes her and even told them about how she lived in Chris's house even after they got married.
Diana and her friends also move closer knowing that it something about Laura and is happy for an opportunity to laught at her openly.
Everyone start to pity her after hearing her story and make bad comments, Mrs Hugh tried to speak and explain but no one was ready to hear her out because they believe that is there is no way Mira could be lying since she even has evidence about living in the house and Mrs Hugh couldn't deny it.
Mrs Brook after seeing that everyone is attacking her, step backwards without helping her, she would have easily told everyone to shut up and not believe this girl here but how dare she treat Laura like that? She watch as they insult her and turned her face away like she didn't hear them but when she saw Laura coming she walk up to her
"Laura, is everything this girl said here true? Did her son bring in another woman immediately after your marriage?" Mrs Brook questioned but Laura ignored her and make her way to Mrs Hugh then she pull her back slightly to her side
"Mom, are you okay?" She asked and Mrs Hugh shakes her head negatively.
She really did everything that Mira has said but not with those intention, she likes Mira a lot and really wants her as a daughter because she claims to love Chris but didn't except things to turn out this way.
Laura looked at Mira angrily and slapped her hard across the face, everyone was shocked as they didn't except her to do that.
Mira fell down because of the hit and held her face in pain. She turns sharply to Laura on the floor and yelled angrily then stood up and attempt to slap her in return but Laura held her hand halfways and her grip on her tightened
"You idiot!" She cussed and push her away.
Everyone gathered there and watch the drama while some start to whisper and make comments although not loudly, Mrs Brook who also didn't except Laura to slap Mira like that step forward and try to talk to her
"Laura, I know you must be angry after finding out about your husband's mistress but you shouldn't.." she said but Laura stops her rudely
"My husband doesn't have a mistress" Laura snapped and looked from one person to another to ensure they all get her message
"You don't have to lie, everyone knows Mira is close with your husband" the girl Laura saw with Mira earlier said creating more suspicion
Laura saw everyone's look of disbelief at her words and decide the best way right now is not to be fierce but use her own tricks against her.
"Mira, why are you doing this?" Laura questioned in acalm voice acting like a victim
"My husband sees you as a younger sister and always respect you, I let you spend sometimes in the house with us and you stayed with mom to keep her company but you didn't appreciate that and wanted to seduce Chris" she said pointing an accusing finger on her.
Mira was shocked by Laura's lie and tries to deny it but Laura wouldn't let her talk and continue, speaking in an harsh tone.
"When Chris wanted to send you out for having such thought, mom was the one who stood up for you and forgave you instead. How can you be so cruel to make up lies against her and my husband?" Everyone keeps silent after hearing Laura's word and then suddenly start to comment fast and point fingers at Mira for lying and trying to get away with it
"So she is the one who wants to seduce and snatch her husband?" Someone said and everyone start to criticize her and scold her badly.
How can she as the third person in their relationship have so much effrontery to lie to them, of course what else can they expect from a low class lady like her
Mira and her mother saw that the situation is no longer in her favour and panicked, Mira tried to talk and convince them that Laura is the one who is lying but no one is listening to her
"What evidence do you have to prove your words? How can you speak of my love for Chris like this?" Mira yelled admist the noise and everyone stopped to look at Laura excepting her to provide an evidence or something like that.
"Evidence? What other evidence do I need? If your so called love is true then why are you here at this party?" Laura questioned and everyone turned to Mira for an explanation then she panicked more
"It's been a few months and you are already here to seek another rich suitor" she pointed out and they start to criticize her again
Everyone knows that most ladies here tonight except those that have partners and are here for business, they are all here to see if they can catch the young prince's heart and get married into the Brook family.
Seeing that things are getting out of hands, Mrs Brook quickly silent everyone and ordered them to move away and continue with the party
"Laura, don't be angry with her. She is just a lowlife" she said and tried to hold her hand but Laura didn't let her. Edward, who has been watching the scene unfold also step forward and stood beside Laura
"Miss, you should leave here right now" Edward commanded coldly.
Mira wanted to say something but has been told of Edward's temper and how he hates anyone disobeying his orders but if she leaves then she will be totally disagraced and her family will suffer a great deal, she needs to remain at this party and earn this people's trust again
"Mr Brook.." she said but he cut her off before she could finish
"Do you need me to repeat myself, you and everyone with you should leave here right away" he roared and even Laura feels intimidated by his voice.
Mira's mother who has been silent since the beginning of everything quickly step up so her daughter wouldn't annoy him more and apologized
"Mr Brook, I am so sorry for not teaching my daughter well please forgive us" she begged and snapped at Mira
"Quickly apologize to Mr Brook" she told her and Mira did as told
"You should apologize to her" he said referring to Mrs Hugh and Mira reluctantly do that and he made her apologize to Laura also before asking someone to escort them out of the house.
The noise dies down after that and like nothing has happened, everyone start to party and drink while some are happy that an opponent has been terminated.
