Prologue

Valerie's POV

I am exhausted. Mum has been admitted in the hospital for three days now. Her chemo treatment for her breast cancer is failing. Granny and I have tried our best but it is not working again. I am so scared. I can't afford to lose my mum, she is the only one I have and she is just reaping the fruit of her labour.

Dad left both mum and I when I was five years old. He came home angrily one day, shouted angrily at mum, packed his bags and left. Mum was devastated. She cried throughout the week. That was twelve years ago. I am lost in my thought when I hear a loud beeping sound coming from the lift support machine next to my mum. I call our to the nurses and doctors and they all rush into the room. I can't lay my finger on what they are saying exactly because they are all speaking Korea but I think it has to do with me leaving the room because the nurse keeps dragging me out.

They tell me my mum will be going into surgery ASAP and I call Granny immediately. Within 15 minutes, Granny gets to the hospital and starts cajoling and petting me that my mum will be okay. After what seems like an eternity, the doctor comes out of the theatre. He and Granny starts communicating in Korea(which I don't really understand) but from the expression on Granny's face, I can tell the surgery was not successful. My mum is dead.
