Chapter 2

"Oh dear, that was very anticlimactic." Ayoub whined, trailing off.

"Bro, everyone is dead. What the fuck are you talking about?" Connor shot.

"Man, calm the hell down! If you're panicking, we have a lower chance of escaping." Ayoub retorted, glaring.

The five of them were all huddled up and trembling in fear. They were terrified, unsure of what to do next.

"Hey, we'll get through this. Don't panic." Adam said, his tone sounding slightly authoritative.

"Thanks," Ren said, grabbing his hand. "I can't believe the zombie outbreak happened at our school! But at least we're still alive."

"How did we even end up getting the stuff in the first place?" Adamo complained.

"We were just studying, minding our business," Connor answered.

"Connor I know your ass wasn't studying." Adamo said.

"Well, I tried. But I guess I couldn't focus on my studying. And now we're probably all going to die here because I was such an idiot," Ren whimpered.

"Let's calm down; we don't know what's going to happen. We should figure out a plan to get out of this school alive, or else we won't be able to get out of here." Adam said.

"Yeah, as Adamo said before, there are tons of them out there, waiting for us. Let's figure out how we can get out of this school and away from them." Connor agreed.

"Ren, stop panicking! It's not helping anyone," Adamo demanded, shaking Ren vigorously.

"You're right, sorry," Ren said sheepishly, wiping away her tears.

"Alright, now that we know how many of them are out there, it's time to get a clear grasp on the situation. Let's figure out how strong they actually are," Ayoub suggested.

"Okay, okay, good idea. Now, did you see how they broke through the barricade so easily and burst through the entrance?" Connor pointed out.

"There were like a thousand of them; I'm shocked it took them that long to even get into the building." Ren added.

"Really?" Adam asked, his voice softening.

Ren nodded and walked toward the entrance.

She watched as the creatures got to the barricade and attempted to knock it down. Ayoub, who'd stayed quiet and hadn't participated in the discussion, was standing beside Ren with his arms crossed.

She took a couple steps back and went over the notes that she made with her friends about zombies and how the infected became infected, and tried to recite that information in her head.

She pointed toward a lone man and declared, "They all look pretty slow; they must have a harder time moving than the normal zombies from horror movies and the like. The bite is how most humans turn, but some just get a little bit on their skin or something. I know that people who are turned away usually stay in hiding until they show up randomly and kill."

"Ren, you're wrong; these things aren't any normal zombies. When one attacked Adam and me, it was fast, and when I stabbed it's brains, it got right back up. These things are tougher than you think." Adamo said.

"Which brings on our next order of business," Adam said. "Do these zombies only have a taste for the living, or are they a threat to us living folk, or are they cannibals and only eat the dead and inedible?"

Before anyone could respond to Adam, Ayoub stepped on a piece of glass, and it shattered underneath his foot, startling the group of them. Everyone held their breath.

The five of them froze in place.

They all stayed quiet, their hearts pounding. After a few tense moments, nothing happened.

"I'd say our next course of action is to be more careful."

Everyone began moving around again, trying to calm themselves. They then looked out through the glass and saw nothing in particular, aside from the horde of zombies waiting outside.

"These are faster, they don't stumble, and they only attack humans and any other flesh," Ayoub suggested.

"SHIT BEHIND YOU, AYOUB!" Ren screamed.

"AGHH, OH MY GOD." Ayoub gasped, whirling around, but his scream was muffled, for a zombie grabbed him, and right before it plunged it's teeth into the back of his head, it was knocked down by a familiar entity. "Shit, that was a close one."

Ren screamed in horror as more zombies began flooding into the room, each of them looking different than the last in various stages of decay.

"Tamer?" Adam was shocked, and then it quickly wore off into fear.

"O-oh." Tamer said, shaking with nervousness as he realized the situation he was in.

"RUN!" Adam screamed.

"HELP!!!" Tamer exclaimed, beginning to retreat from the crowd and quickly hopping out of the broken window.

Ren quickly dashed along with the group to exit, leaving the safety and sanctuary of the building. They reached the entrance. Adam reached for the handle and attempted to push the door open. The group hurried, each taking a step outside in hopes that they could escape and survive; however, they heard several snaps, cracks, and clicks.

The five of them quickly looked up and saw the ropes give way, and large wooden beams crashed down onto them, knocking all five onto the ground. The ropes snapped, and wood shards and broken pieces of concrete flew out, embedding themselves in the backs, chests, skulls, and arms of the young heroes and knocking Ren down.

Connor took hold of a particularly long piece of wood that was about four feet long. As the five of them continued sprinting away, Tamer lagged behind and tripped on a rock, getting mauled by zombies. Tamer crawled towards his classmates, as the pain was unbearable, and let out an ear-splitting scream.

"EVERYONE, WE NEED TO GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE NOW!" Adamo screamed.

"Agh!" Ren cried, clutching at her foot, blood gushing out of a huge hole, and a part of the sole peeled back like the flesh on an orange, exposing raw flesh and tendons. Ren kicked at the ground to get up, but slipped and fell forward. She immediately got to her feet. "SOMEONE HELP!"

As the horde got closer, one of the zombies fell into the same trap. Another got its leg caught and let out an eerie howl. Adam ran back to grab Ren and continued running with the rest of the group. Everyone was holding back tears of shock, and everyone was fighting against the will to pass out and faint. They sprinted down Greenbank Road as the zombies continued to chase them and got to the edge of the road, heading into a parking lot in Riocan.

"Any cars?!"

Connor kept running, and the rest followed suit.

They circled a car, the keys already inside. "THANK THE HEAVENS!"

The group filed into the car as quickly as they could. The car reversed out of its parking space and accelerated rapidly towards the city. The sounds of the undead quickly faded out, and the five began breathing a sigh of relief.
