CHAPTER TWO

As ridiculous as it was, these men claimed they were from the government. Aunty Margaret led them into the small room she used as office and they were there for a long time. When they came out, they said their goodbyes and said they would be coming back in a few days time.

One of the men gave me a weird smile which I found very very suspicious.

Whatever they said in there was bad enough because that night aunty Margaret called me into her room after we had dinner. She asked me if I knew why she called me but I answered no.

She told me she loves me and she wouldn't want anything bad to happen to me. She said I was too special for my own good. She then told me that the men who came in the afternoon would be coming in some few days time to take me. She said they were good guys and they would take very good care of me.

To me, that was like the most ridiculous nonsense I have ever heard. They were good because they were from the government... why then did they want to take me away from the only family I know?

I was only about to clock six years old but the thought of going with those men didn't seem right to me. Were they going to use me for experiments? Is it because of my eyes?

I voiced out these questions though it wasn't intentional and aunty Margaret for the first time scolded me. She told me I would go with those men unless I wanted bad things to happen to everyone at the foster home.

It was then I realized that they threatened her. I accepted involuntarily but I wept that night in bed with aunt Margaret since she allowed me to sleep in her room. She comforted me as best as she could.

For the next few days, I had to force down every food I was given. Everyone at home was suspicious but I said nothing to them. Even if I did, what was the chances that they wouldn't tell me good riddance.

Duncan though was very attentive. He wanted to know what was going on and he decided to ask aunty Margaret herself who gave him a very simple but complicated answer.

She told him the government was adopting me. I can still remember the look he gave her while he asked her if the government ever adopted children.

I was still day dreaming when those men came back. It felt like a joke but it wasn't. They said I shouldn't bother packing anything since I wouldn't need them. Of course, I was tempted to run away before they came but I was a child who had nothing and nowhere to go. Infact, I wasn't sure if I wouldn't be kidnapped.

I took one last look at everyone. Aunty Margaret came forward to hug me and also Duncan. I noticed he slipped something into my pocket. I wasn't going to cry so I wore my big girl's pants and stepped out of the house.

I got into the car though it was more of a van.

Immediately, a black cloth covered my small face. For the first time, I felt fear. Real fear. it haunts me till date.

Then a man spoke up. He told me not to bother struggling and not to try to escape if I loved myself. I cried silently in the vehicle till we got to the place.

We came out and a very big camp stood before us.

I might not be right about the experiment stuff but I forgot to mention that they could turn me into a weapon. This camp was a military camp and the least of my problems was just beginning.
