It's Surging Time

After a week, Smaug had gathered 880 DP and enough XP to level up. In doing so a new prompt showed up.

"I haven't actually done any fighting, the closest thing is my run-in with that one party, so I guess increasing my MATK is optimal as my only form my attack right now, Yeah I think becoming an up-close magic caster is what I want, and to do that should I be fast or tanky… well until I get more scaling skills I'll build off of those but for now, let's put all three points into INT"

"Perfect, now I just need to get out of DP debt and start replacing the monsters I lose the death rate on my side has started going down ever since I re-organized the teams to put all the strongest kobolds together, but that is only a temporary fix, eventually someone is going to start taking out my forces and then they will just steamroll my dungeon and I'll be screwed."

As Smaug was whining about the situation he put himself into, the system gave him a message, a long-awaited saving grace.

"Oh? This was mentioned earlier, this must be what the 'Surge event' is, I probably won't be able to break, but this will definitely help me replenish my forces, I could probably even start prepping for prisoners buying meals and kobolds to help prep them, there are many things that I need to do. At least no one has beaten any of my bosses yet. I could really do with another DP injection from that Giony fellow."

Later as the day went on it eventually hit night.

Switching locations, we are in the guild master Giony's office. He pressed into his communication device and spoke.

"Denise, I have some more paperwork that needs to be filed on your way to collect it bring me anything that may be of importance."

"Right away sir"

The voice on the other end promptly cut out and not even a minute later Denise walked into the room, with a small stack of papers and set them on his desk.

"Here you go, some unique quests that you need to approve and assign grades to, some letters of gratitude from other branches as well as various reports of monster activity abnormalities in the area as you requested."

"Perfect take this stack here and put them where they go, after that you should be good for the day. There are some graded quests as well as official documents in there for recent business statements, order forms, as well as other things."

"I'll get right on that, I'll see you tomorrow, make sure you eventually fall asleep in a proper bed today ok?"

"Rest is for the weak, I can't get behind on work, the surge was only delayed it can still very easily happen at any time, and if its strong it might be trouble for us. I'll tell you what if none of these reports are signs of an imminent or D rank and above surge, I'll put some of the less essential stuff off till tomorrow."

"Sure whatever you say."

The night went on and Giony slowly worked through the pile of paperwork with every passing paper making the bags under his eyes grow bigger and bigger. Eventually, he got mid-way through and was reading through it.

"What's this a large number of frenzied monsters? This can't be good… lets's see upwards of E rank and in high numbers uh oh. This is one from the flaming forest around the 23rd sector, it's safe to assume this is happening in the surrounding areas also. It may not necessarily be strong but it is definitely ilmenite, ugh I guess I won't be getting a full night's rest, let's see where is that quest drafting paper?"

As the night goes on Giony was up until the bright rays shined over the horizon behind him through his window. He was exhausted both mentally and physically and in desperate need of a break to sleep, but there was no time, in as little as a week there might be a surge that can lead to countless deaths if it isn't properly handled, luckily after going through all for the reports, the surge seemed to be low level. It still would be a problem, but the quest would be D rank at best which is about the base requirement for being a 'real' adventurer beyond just registering with the guild.
