A Simple Hero

Hero’s are chosen. I’m born one. Hero’s are needed. There’s enough to go around. Hero’s are special. There’s enough not to be special. Hero’s are powerful. I can’t snap metal with my fingertips. Hero’s are worshiped. No one knows me. Hero’s are good. That’s debatable. Hero’s are kids. They shouldn’t be. Hero’s are the best. Only when they save people. Simplicity is plain. So it is what I follow. I’m not special or physically strong. I’m just an average guy who isn’t needed in the grand scheme of things. So why should I care about anything at all? After all, I’m the kind of person heroes kill whilst ‘protecting’ the city. So when I can just die at anytime, I might as well be simple. Because simplicity doesn’t lie, unlike all those around me.

Entrance Exam

The walls were painted cream, bright from the sun with the shadowing leaves dropping from the neighbouring trees. I looked right, and then left. Extending far beyond, I guess it truely is a big school.

I guess those gentlemen at the cafe told me the right instructions. I thought that they wouldn't have believed me.

I sighed and stuffed my hands in my pockets, picking up my feet only to freeze midway.

"What?"

On my right, appeared a girl. Not just any girl, but a majestic and beautiful women. With pale, yet vibrant skin. Long locks of black hair, eye catching in front of a colourful environment. Blue oceanic, strange eyes, seemingly out of place with her looks.

Clothed in a well fitted uniform, though clean and fragile. I knew it definitely wasn't.

"Ehem! May I help you?"

The porcelain-like girl stood still, whilst gazing into my eyes. What so special about them? I mean, it's not like deep brown eyes were uncommon around here. Or in general.

"If there isn't something bothering you, then I have to go"

I reached into my pocket and grabbing my tangled headphones, I scowled.

Damn it!

I swear I spent at least a full 10 minutes just untangling them, before reaching into my other pocket to grab my phone.

Attaching the plug into the headphone socket, I pressed shuffle on my playlist.

Walking closer to the gates of the school, it stood tall as I gazed on it from below. Obviously tall, yet reachable for any individual to touch if they just jumped.

Strange.

I entered through the gates, hands in pocket and music blasting into my ears.

Maybe I could've eaten a bubblegum while I was at it. To look a bit edgier...

What am I thinking?

I continued walking, plopping my feet in front of me in a rhythmic fashion. The school was nearly empty, with very few students wandering the footpath to their destinations.

The entrance to the school looked like a very long cat walk through buildings and facilities. Passing by I read the names, 'Controlled Disaster Unit', 'Civilian Protection Application', 'Battalion Services', 'Canteen'.

The canteen looked interesting, I wonder what food they have?

As I wondered through the school, a guy came up to me. I took off my headphones and pocketed them.

"Yes?"

Unlike the previous strange girl, this man responded.

"Excuse me, are you here for yearly entrance exam?"

I nod my head, also bopping to the music stuck in my head. The man checked his phone as I responded, specifically looking at the clock.

"Your pretty early, not many come at this time. Especially since a disaster had just attacked the city"

I hummed in agreement, pretending to listen with my music oriented mind. I hate it when a song gets stuck in my head!

"If your looking for the arena, then turn right at the boys dormitory, and then pass the 'Military Weapons Unit'. After a minute or so, you can see the arena"

The man snickered at the end. I rose an eyebrow. I hadn't been listening, but I only managed to catch the arena part.

"Arena, why are you telling me directions towards the arena? Wait, don't tell me...!"

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

The man laughed at my misfortune.

"I guess this year is doomed too. Not many like the arena exam, but if your willing to wait another year, I guess they can chose a different event. But it's the luck of the draw, I wish you good luck my friend"

I nodded sadly at the waving man.

Ugh, why does it have to be the arena!? The one thing that encourages us students to beat each other into oblivion. With people that can snap metal like toothpicks and people that can barrage you with meteors. Nobody is safe when it's a powered verses powered.

I grumbled whilst I followed the directions of the man. That just ruined my day, even though there wasn't much to ruin. Though, I guess it's ok to assume no one wants to have their day ruined.

The trees were scattered through the school grounds, but surrounded the arena just enough so that you could see the top.

Covering the top of my eyes, I squinted at the roof of the arena.

It was a handsome man that looked straight back with an intrigued gaze. I guess I would too if you saw a man stranded in the middle of the footpath.

I looked around myself, seeing no one else had yet to arrive. I guess I could just kill some time.

Sitting down on the bench, I reached to grab my phone only to reach into an empty pocket. I sighed and looked up at the man.

"Can I have my phone?"

My bored expression surprised the man enough to nearly fall off the edge of the roof.

Recovering, he looked back at me with a finger going back and forth to me and him.

'Follow'

I sighed and stayed put. I don't have any obligation to follow him, plus I have my phones backed up. I could just by another one.

"Aren't you going to follow me?"

The voice appeared in front of me, along with a figure of a tall and lean boy. With the same uniform as the girl at the gate, and the same blue eyes. I figured that they were siblings.

"Do I have too?"

"Do you want to die?"

I tapped my chin and hummed.

"Eventually..."
