Chapter 10: Poor Ben!

"Jess!" the girl beside you cries out before rushing to the debris.

As the distant sirens signal the arrival of police and firefighters, you and the girl work together to remove the scrap metal and uncover another young girl.

Her clothes are all torn but there is not even a scratch on her, and you knew that although the girl is unconscious, she must be completely fine.

As she is Jessica Jones.

Although she was just 16, and was even in the same class as your sister MJ, she could probably kick your ass easily. As she has some serious superpowers.

She will go by the same name in the future too, and her powers will grow and mature considerably.

The girl beside you, trying to wake Jessica up, is Patricia Walker, her sister.

They are not blood-related, as the Walkers have adopted Jessica.

Patricia Walker (Patsy), right now 17, will grow up to be Hellcat.

She is a small-time hero, but you have a soft spot for cats.

"Lucas, she's not waking up," Patsy tells you, panicking. Just as she says that, you see Jessica's eyes flutter.

"Haa," Jessica yawns, getting up as if she had just taken a nap.

"Jessica, thank God you're alright," Patsy says, hugging Jessica tightly.

Jessica looks at Patsy confused but then notices you standing there.

"Lu-Lucas, why are you here?" Jessica asks, blushing.

"He saved us, Jess," Patsy says with a big smile.

You look around and see that the fire is almost gone now. You give your jacket to Jessica, whose clothes are torn, and then lead the girls out of the area towards your car.

Meanwhile, Patsy keeps pestering you about how you used magic to save her, while Jessica listens silently.

You settle them down inside your car and then head back towards the bridge, where you can hear everyone applauding and see multiple news helicopters surrounding the area.

You hear from the crowds how the four people with powers saved a lot of people, including a firefighter truck and a children's bus.

You arrive at the scene of Ben trying to approach Laurie, his fiancée, but she backs away and then removes her engagement ring, keeping it on the ground.

You stay back away from the crowd, not wanting people to notice you, but Laurie comes in your direction with tears in her eyes and notices you instantly.

"Luke," she says, sobbing, and hugs you.

Laurie Holden, you remember her not just because she was Ben's hot fiancée but also because she played a role in the TV series 'The Walking Dead.'

"I can't take his shit anymore," Laurie says, sobbing into your chest.

"Alright, let's leave here," you say, taking her away towards your car, not wanting to make a scene in public.

You see Susan and the other Fantastic Four members being escorted towards the emergency services. Knowing that going there would only add to the chaos, you decide to leave a message for Susan.

You reach your car, and Laurie has calmed down now. You asked the girls if they wanted to visit the hospital, but both of them were adamant to go back home, so you decide to drop off the girls at their house.

Both the girls and Laurie stayed in this area, so you reach the girl's apartment quickly and ask Laurie to wait in the car as you drop them off.

"Do you want me to tell your mother about what happened today, or do you want it to be a secret?" You directed the question more towards Jessica.

"Dorothy will not care about it; all she cares about is money," Patsy spoke venomously, and Jessica remained quiet.

Knowing their family dynamics quite well already, you didn't ask again.

As you reached their door, Patsy took out the house keys and opened the door.

"Jess, you go inside; I have something to talk about with Lucas," Patsy said.

"Okay, thank you, Lucas," Jessica murmured shyly and went inside the house.

You smiled at her cuteness and then focused on Patsy, who was standing there with a hesitant face.

"What's wrong, Patsy? You know you can tell me anything," you said softly.

"Dorothy is forcing me to start taking those kinds of movies," Patsy said with misty eyes.

"But isn't your contract under my mom's agency? I don't think she will even let you apply for anything like that," you asked her, confused.

"Some director approached Dorothy, and he is paying a lot of money for me to star in his film … but that film is basically porn," she said with anger.

Well, Patsy was a famous child star under your mother's agency; she even had a show revolving around her called 'It's Patsy,' so it made sense why people would pay top dollar to see her naked.

She leaned forward and hugged you. "I don't know what to do, Lucas," Patsy said, sobbing.

"Don't worry, I will have a 'talk' with Dorothy personally; after that, she won't force you into these kinds of things again," you said, patting her back softly.

"Oh, Lucas, thank you so much," she said happily with a smile. Then she looked into your eyes and tiptoed to kiss you.

You kissed her back, making out with her just outside her door.

"That was my first kiss," Patsy said breathlessly. Then she gave you a peck on your cheek. "A reward for my hero, for saving me," she said and then skipped into her house.

You could still taste her sweet lips as you got back to your car.

Laurie was absentmindedly looking out of the car window; she stayed that way until you reached underneath her apartment.

"Would you like to come upstairs for a cup of coffee?" She asked, looking at you vulnerably.

You agree, as Laurie definitely needs company right now.

A house can tell you a lot about the people living there. From the minimal furniture and decoration, you can tell that Laurie's financial situation is not looking good.

"You can sit here; I'm just gonna grab a cup of coffee for you," Laurie says, and you nod, sitting down on the single sofa.

She turns on the TV, and the news channel is on.

"… people are calling them the Fantastic Four! One of them can stretch really long, the other can be on fire, one of them is just a thing made of rocks, and the most powerful of them all can grab objects with her mind and can even become invisible."

With the commentary are scattered shots and videos of the four of them using their abilities to save people. You are surprised to see in one shot Susan using multiple shield constructs to get many people out of danger.

Instead of going to the kitchen, Laurie sits back down beside you, watching the television intently.

Then there was even an interview from the team.

"We at Watson Labs, together with the Baxter Foundation, are planning to do extensive research so we can understand our powers better," you hear Susan speak confidently to the reporters.

"Yes, we will have to see what kind of other symptoms such a genetic mutation would pose," Reed adds from the side.

"So it's a disease?" asks a reporter sharply.

"No, we should call it a gift," Susan interjects.

"Yes, what else would such power be if not gifts?" says Johnny from the side with a laugh.

"But what about him, this doesn't look like a gift," says the reporter, pointing at Ben.

Laurie grabs your hand tightly, clearly nervous.

"Doesn't every team need a mascot? He is ours," Johnny says, patting Ben on his rock shoulder.

The reporters laugh in good humour. Laurie beside you just sighs sadly.

"Shouldn't you go to the government with this? What if people are in danger because of your powers?" asks another reporter sharply.

"There is no one more qualified to research this new development than our team, and for the people today who suffered in such an unseen accident, the Watson Relief Foundation would like to provide you with aid," Susan speaks with a charitable smile, and the crowd around erupts in cheer.

You are glad that Susan followed the plan you sent over. A bit of charity will make the public see them in a positive light.

"So who is the leader among you all?" a female reporter asks, looking at Susan expectantly.

"I am," Susan says, looking at the other three, all of them nodding.

You raise an eyebrow at this. So now that Susan is not Reed's girlfriend in this world, she has decided to take on a more leading role. Well, that's good; you are proud of Sue.

"People are calling you the new Heroes, the Fantastic Four. What are your thoughts on that?" a reporter asks.

"We love it… We are the Fantastic Four Woohooh!" shouts Johnny while hugging Reed and Ben.

Laurie shuts down the television.

"Sorry, I can't watch it anymore," she said while shaking. "We had such a good thing going on. We were about to get married…"

Laurie goes on a whole rant about Ben and how he is practically a servant of Reed. She had repeatedly told him not to go on this space mission, but he didn't listen to her.

You were also not surprised to find out that Laurie is very poor, as Ben doesn't earn much and she had to make ends meet by working as a waitress in a nearby restaurant.

Well, if not for your funding, Reed's Baxter Building would have gone under a long time ago. Reed knows nothing about finance and just dumps all the money into his research, so Ben not getting paid much is normal.

You look down at Laurie, crying in your chest, hugging you tightly. You caress her back to calm her down.

"I am so tired of all of this… What will I even do now? Why can't I have someone as good as you?" she said, looking up at you teary-eyed and then moves up, kissing you aggressively while undoing your shirt buttons.

You had thought about such a thing happening from when you accepted her invitation to her house, so you are not surprised and even excited, who can refuse such a hot body delivered to their arms?
