Unexpected Encounter Part 2
[Narrator's POV]
A few minutes before the barrier cracks...
James sat cross-legged in the air, his eyes closed as he reached deep within himself, feeling the familiar surge of power. The air around him crackled with energy as he tried to synchronize his Trinity to enter the Mana Lord state. Nearby, Lyra floated anxiously, watching as the vessel's shield was relentlessly battered by the Kraken's tentacles.
"Hurry up, James,"she thought, her worry growing as the barrier began to falter.
"By Gaia, it's going to break!"
As the barrier threatened to collapse, Lyra reached out to warn James. But before she could, his eyes snapped open, glowing fiercely with a blue light. He raised his hands, and a runic seal appeared, shooting a condensed projectile of mana. The attack was both furious and silent, parting the surface of the sea as it soared through the air. It struck the Kraken's head with a force that made the creature reel back, its roar shaking the air.
But the Kraken was relentless, not easily deterred. It lunged for another attack, lashing out at the ship and spitting poison stings towards James. One massive appendage slammed into the vessel's side, sending several crew members flying. Another tentacle rose high, poised to strike at the heart of the ship.
James acted quickly, dodging the poisoned projectiles. In his boosted state, he arrived just in time, thrusting his hand forward to summon a protective barrier that shimmered with golden light. The Kraken's tentacle crashed against the barrier, sending shockwaves through the ship, but the shield held firm.
Lyra focused her magic, drawing upon the surrounding water. With a sharp motion, she transformed the swirling water into sharp ice spears that shot towards the Kraken, piercing its scales. The creature roared in pain, withdrawing its tentacle as it struggled against the icy assault.
Now free of the Kraken's grip, the vessel began its barrage of counterattacks. Plasma-like projectiles launched from hidden compartments, streaking through the water like shooting stars before exploding against the Kraken's body. The air filled with the creature's enraged cries, but the vessel did not let up. Sonic emitters activated, producing high-frequency sound waves that disoriented the Kraken, causing it to thrash wildly.
James, feeling the final push was near, tapped into his Mana Sea, a reservoir that had been growing since his awakening on the island. In the face of this ancient threat, something primal and unstoppable stirred within him. The hum of mana and the formation of a runic seal in front of him made for a breathtaking sight, a tribute to the force that had sent him into this world.
"White Meteor,"James whispered.
"James..." Lyra whispered back, a mixture of awe and concern in her eyes as she watched him draw an immense amount of mana.
With a deep breath, James unleashed his power. The air around him shimmered as a white meteor, trailing like a shooting star, lit up the atmosphere and impacted the Kraken.
'BOOOOOMMMMM'
What happened next was like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. The sea rose to a height of a kilometre, the winds turned into tornadoes, merging into a cocktail of destruction that threatened to capsize the ship. James, feeling the strain on his Trinity, still managed to muster enough mana, with the ship's energy as aid, to create a shield to prevent disaster.
The storm subsided within minutes, and the Kraken's whereabouts became unknown—whether it was dead or had retreated to the depths of the sea was unclear. James floated shakily onto the ship, collapsing to one knee as the last of his power ebbed away. The aura around him faded, and his glowing eyes dimmed. Lyra was at his side in an instant, her hand on his shoulder as she helped him to his feet.
*"You did it,"* she said softly, her eyes filled with admiration.
He nodded, still catching his breath. *"We did it,"* he corrected, glancing at the vessel, which was still afloat, though battered. The strangely armoured crew members were already at work, repairing the damage and tending to the wounded.
Captain Nerida approached James and Lyra, her expression one of deep respect.
"You have saved us all,"* she said, bowing her head. "The people of the Atlantic continent owe you a great debt."
Hearing her statement sent shockwaves through James' body. He had suspicions about the era of the DC world he was sent to, and now it all started to make sense—the island, the fantastical creatures, the Atlanteans using a water vessel, and their description of home as the Continent of Atlantis, not an underwater city.
Reorienting himself after noticing Lyra's worried look, James shook his head. "There's no need for that. We did what we had to."
Wanting to confirm his suspicions, he asked, "Is there a certain empire with the name USA?"
Not thinking much of it, and eager to fulfil her saviour's request, Nerida answered, "No."
Confirming his suspicions, James looked out at the calm sea and sighed. Returning his attention to her, he said, "I would like to rest if there is any room for accommodation."
"Absolutely, that is the least we can do. Follow me,"Captain Nerida said, leading them into the interior of the ship after delegating the role of overseeing repairs to her second in command.
And so, the journey of James and his fairy companion continued, even as he found himselve thousands of years in the past.
