Chapter 5: An Unexpected Encounter Part 1
A few hours after departing the island
[James POV]
As James and Lyra soared above the ocean, guided by the compass, a sense of calm settled over him. The world was breathtaking. Birds of various species flew freely, while schools of fish, in all their sizes and shapes, swam gracefully through the clear waters below. Everything seemed perfect, except for one issue—the compass failed to indicate the distance to the nearest landmass.
"It was a bad idea to fly," James whispered to Lyra.
"By Gaia's mercy, I told you we should have made a water ves—"
*Roar*
[Narrator's POV]
*Roar*
The sea surged with a ferocity that sought to emulate Poseidon's wrath. Waves crashed violently against the protective energy barrier of an unknown vessel, sending torrents of water cascading over its shimmering, golden envelope inscribed with arcane sigils.
Pausing in mid-flight, James, with Lyra perched on his shoulders, quickly cast a mana barrier to shield them from the violent winds and water. He steadied his heartbeat, a mix of nervousness and excitement coursing through him, knowing that this situation was a consequence of his actions wanting to come to such a world. He waited, tense, for whatever being was causing such turmoil.
The horizon darkened, and the sky was choked with storm clouds crackling with lightning. But it wasn't the storm that filled the hearts of the crew and the air occupants with dread—it was the creature rising from the depths.
The Kraken, an ancient beast of unimaginable power, had awakened from its slumber. Yet nothing could have prepared them for the sheer size of the creature that now loomed before them.
With a deafening roar, the Kraken broke the surface, its massive tentacles reaching high into the sky. The creature's skin was a mottled mix of dark greens and purples, covered in scales that glistened with metallic light. Its eyes, glowing with malevolent intelligence, fixed on the vessel, and it let out another earth-shattering bellow.
"Be ready to help," James said, his voice barely steady amid the chaos.
Lyra nodded, her hands already moving in intricate patterns as she began to channel her magic.
The creature snarled and wrapped its massive tentacles around the ship.
The water vessel responded in kind. Energy cannons fired concentrated beams of light, slicing through the storm and striking the Kraken's tentacles with pinpoint accuracy. Harpoons, tipped with explosive charges, were launched from the sides of the ship, embedding themselves into the creature's thick skin before detonating in bursts of fire and electricity.
...
A woman dressed in a body suit made of metal-like fish scales stood at the front of the ship, barking orders. She was six feet tall, with long, wavy dark hair and piercing eyes. Her beautiful face was currently painted with a serious expression, tinged with worry.
"What is the integrity of the energy shields, officer?" she asked hurriedly, as she supplied mana into a crystal mounted on a pedestal.
"Captain Nerida, energy levels are dropping rapidly. If the bombardment of the shield continues, it will deplete in a few minutes, even with your mana being supplied to the energy cry—"
*Crack*
A sudden silence fell over the ship as everyone turned toward the sound.
The barrier had cracked.
