Underworld: Carbon

When the world changed all those years ago and people started to gain superpowers everyone thought they were living their wildest dreams. Everyone knew that things were about to change, that the world was about to enter a new age, an age of evolution. When I first got my powers I had no idea what to do with them, not because I didn't know what to do with them but because I didn't know where to start. I had no direction, but I had ambition. I knew I wasn't a good person and me gaining my powers wasn't going to change that either, I knew I wanted to reach the top but I didn't know the journey that I would take would be more brutal and dark than anything I've ever faced before. Looking back at it people have asked me if I had any regrets on my path and every time they ask I look back and everything that I've ever done and everything that got me to where I am. I laugh and turn to look at them and say this: "Fuck no. If I had the chance I would do it all again." *** I don't own the cover *** Earth in this novel is set in an alternate reality/universe so don't use common sense here.

Techniques

Stepping out of the elevator I walked down to the other side of the hall and stopped in front of a sleek black door.

The door had no handle, it only had a scanner and a shine that allowed one to see their reflection.

"At least they aren't cheap with the presentation." I scoffed and pulled out my card and placed it on the scanner. The scanner lit up in a green flash and the door slid open.

I stepped into the room and scanned the entire place with my eyes. I nodded my head in satisfaction at what I was seeing, I couldn't lie, the room was nice.

It was the definition of a luxury apartment although this was a real hotel room. A large circular bed in the middle of the room had perfectly laid out black velvet sheets and pillows. There were small stairs that led to the open kitchen to the right of the bed, the smooth black wooden flooring along with the sleek silver metallic oven gave the whole room a high-class vibe.

As I walked throughout the room it was being dimly lit up by the motion sensor lights that were hung around the room.

After completing my tour of the room and taking a much-needed shower to clean myself of the dried-up impurities, I changed my clothes jumped into my bed, and began to plan out my next moves.

"I need to get my hands on a Gene Refinement Technique." I mumbled as I stared at the ceiling of my room, "But it needs to be the right one, while Espers have infinite paths they do have restrictions that will destroy them if they don't tread carefully."

I picked up a datashard from the nightstand next to my bed and inserted it into the tablet next to it. A hologram of a string of words appeared and illuminated the room.

I skimmed through the knowledge but could perfectly retain everything my eyes had read. I had a very good memory even before I became a Superhuman but now it seems that my memory has become photographic.

The information I was reading might seem normal or even pointless in the eyes of the majority of superhumans but in the eyes of people like me who have barely even entered the doorstep of the world of Superhumans this information was priceless.

All superhumans absorbed the energy in the atmosphere and used it for their purposes. But to use that energy to its maximum potential we have techniques that are unique to each profession but they all work the same; to cultivate and become stronger through the use of energy.

Every high-class Superhuman had a technique to help them absorb energy but it varies on what Profession the Superhuman is.

The energy techniques that are used by Pugilists are called Qi Cultivation techniques or Mantras, they use these techniques to turn the energy into their qi to use for their purposes. But due to the many branches of the Pugilist tree, there are an almost infinite amount of techniques of all different kinds.

For example, there is a branch of Pugilist that is known as Body Refiners that use the Qi they derived from the neutral energy to refine their bodies and make them damn near indestructible. They were far stronger than the usual Energy Cultivating Pugilist when it came to melee combat but due to them specializing in their body they held a disadvantage when it came to artes and spells using energy. But there are those monsters who practice both, giving them no weakness and making them invincible in combat, but practicing Body Refinement was extremely hard and very costly, it could give the entire Engineering Profession a run for its money.

It burned through resources like how Engineers burn through cash and most Pugilists saw dual cultivating both energy and body as pointless and detrimental.

If I were a Pugilist I would pursue the path of dual cultivating body and energy, sure it would take a lot of time and consume so many resources but the benefits outweighed such steep requirements, and that was only one of the branches of the Pugilist path.

Psychics use Mind and Soul Techniques since those were the aspects that they used the most. The Soulforce of Psychics was immense and truly killing them was very hard. Some Psychics can possess another body whenever their original one gets destroyed.

Mind Techniques were rare, very rare. They could protect the mind from mental attacks such as spells, illusions, and dreamscapes. These were highly sought-after artes that were hoarded and restricted by the strongest.

Arcanists don't use their energy to make themselves stronger, making them one of only two Professions that don't use energy the conventional way. Arcanists use the energy as a catalyst to cast their spells, their goal when it comes to energy is to only increase their reserves as much as they possibly can so they can cast spells more efficiently.

They would use spells or formations to augment their bodies or wear enchanted robes that have all kinds of spells to make up for their weaknesses.

Engineers are also like Arcanists when it comes to energy, they don't use it to make themselves stronger but use it to improve their creations which is their real strength.

Engineers would make extremely powerful weapons and gadgets to help them gain the upper hand against their enemies and this went for engineers who aren't combat oriented and those who are usually in combat would have a mechanical suit to help them out in battles or amass a mechanical army to overwhelm the opponent.

Espers had DNA Refinement Techniques, it was similar to the Energy Cultivation Techniques of the Pugilist but instead, the gathered energy would be used to refine the Gene Chain of the Esper. Refining the Gene Chain of the Esper would not only make them stronger but give them new ways to use their abilities and control their powers better. There were even Espers where depending on their DNA Refinement Technique their Esper Ability can go through a mutation and gain a new ability or it could become something else entirely.

But where there are pros there are also cons. While DNA Refinement Techniques were amazing and very unique there also came with restrictions that were very head-racking and could cause a lot of hesitation and doubt.

Unlike the other Techniques, DNA Refinement Techniques couldn't be changed once one started using them. This was because of the nature of DNA Refinement Techniques, the runes would bond to the Espers Gene Chain and completely assimilate with it making it an irreversible process. There was no going around changing DNA Refinement Mantras since if you switched you switched your technique you risked your entire Gene Chain collapsing, killing you in the best-case scenario and making you a cripple in the worst.

This was why Espers were so hesitant when it came to picking a DNA Technique. It was without a doubt the most important decision they would make in their lives and one would have to be an idiot to take it as a joke and I was no different.

With the foundation that I have along with my Energy Manipulation, I wasn't going to pick a DNA Technique unless it was the best for me. I could only choose once and I wasn't going to waste my potential and jeopardize my future all because I'm in a rush.

Finishing the last sentence of the information I removed the datashard from the tablet and turned off the lights, I then closed my eyes and let myself fall asleep.

While I have become a superhuman and recovered from the feeling of fatigue I was feeling after making it to shore, I was still exhausted mentally, from the betrayal, from getting shot and falling into the sea and thinking I was going to die.

Honesty, I'm surprised I even made it to my room without passing out.

Sorry for the late upload again. I'll try to catch up on all the days I missed.
