Underworld: Carbon

When the world changed all those years ago and people started to gain superpowers everyone thought they were living their wildest dreams. Everyone knew that things were about to change, that the world was about to enter a new age, an age of evolution. When I first got my powers I had no idea what to do with them, not because I didn't know what to do with them but because I didn't know where to start. I had no direction, but I had ambition. I knew I wasn't a good person and me gaining my powers wasn't going to change that either, I knew I wanted to reach the top but I didn't know the journey that I would take would be more brutal and dark than anything I've ever faced before. Looking back at it people have asked me if I had any regrets on my path and every time they ask I look back and everything that I've ever done and everything that got me to where I am. I laugh and turn to look at them and say this: "Fuck no. If I had the chance I would do it all again." *** I don't own the cover *** Earth in this novel is set in an alternate reality/universe so don't use common sense here.

First Task I

I followed Taze in silence for another ten minutes before he stopped before a long line of people.

The line was mad long, I couldn't even see the front of the damn thing.

"There's no way you brought me here just to wait in front of this long ass line," I complained as I turned my head to the left to look at him, "This is where you're supposed to reveal your presence and everyone moves out the way but instead we're just standing here."

Taze laughed and looked at me, gleaming in amusement, "What you thought this was? You thought I was some big shot and could make the world bend to my will with my clout alone?" He asked.

"Nah, I thought you would at least be close enough to know those types of people. I thought you were their number one dicksucker with that Grade A cranium you got attached to your neck, but it seems that I was wrong. Did you accidentally bite the tip when you were trying to kiss it instead?" I smirked, seeing his growing anger, "it's ok you can tell me. I promise you your secret is safe with me-"

I was cut off by a chill that crept deep into my heart and I felt the look Taze was giving me. I wisely decided to shut up for now before he sent my soul into oblivion.

"Look I was just joking. Damn. No need to get all bloodthirsty and shit." I hurriedly pleaded while putting my hands up as a sign of surrender, "Try to be a good friend and this is what I get in return."

"Friends? We haven't even known each other for twenty-four hours. The fuck you mean we're friends?" Taze retorted.

Before I could begin my rebuttal I was stopped as I sensed a presence coming toward us. I turned my head to the source of this presence and was at a loss for words at what I saw.

It was the same woman that I saw when I first arrived at the Continental, only this time, she wasn't with her goons and it was just her by herself.

She seemed to have drawn the entire crowd's attention as everyone stopped what they were doing to lay their eyes on her. It was like the president had just walked into the room and everyone was both enchanted and on edge.

I could even hear distinct whispers of some of the people in line that the woman walked past as she seemed to make her way towards my direction but due to my low grade, I couldn't pick up on what they were saying.

She finally stopped walking when she was about three feet away from Taze and me, I was finally able to see her up close in person and I had to admit that I was not disappointed.

She wore a luxurious black dress that wrapped tightly around her curvy body and a Cuban link chain with rose gold diamonds around her smooth neck, wearing black heels that made her look like a bewitching and alluring dark goddess.

Her silky smooth waterfall of onyx black hair fell halfway down her back and her magenta eyes gleamed with interest as her gaze lingered on me for a little while before they flashed to Taze with recognition.

"Hello, Taze. I didn't expect to see you here at all." She greeted before turning her attention back to yours truly, "It seems that you found yourself a new prospect."

"I don't know about the prospect and all that other stuff, as far as I know, he's just giving me a beginners tour of the criminal underworld so I don't end up going out bad all due to the fact I was uninformed about things that I should've known," I said and looked at the woman.

She frowned and narrowed her eyes and dreadful feeling enveloped my body. It was like I was looking at the abyss itself, void, dark, and neverending.

Cold sweat drenched my back and my soul howled with fear. I stumbled back in fear and lightheadedness.

Feeling the gazes of everyone around the room looking at me I refused to pass out from a mere stare and with whatever willpower I was able to muster up I remained on my feet and stood up straight after I caught myself.

The woman's eyes opened wide in shock and then irritation flashed in them as she gritted her teeth and started to step closer to me as the spectators began to clear the area quickly in fear of their lives.

But it seemed that someone didn't want me to die today.

Taze sighed and waved his hand, a cool energy washed over my body and healed whatever damage I may have suffered from this bitch's attack.

"That's enough Katherine." He said and stepped in between us, "I'm disappointed that you still feel the need to assert your dominance on people far weaker, especially with the level of power you've achieved."

"This ant has the nerve to hold his gaze at me. I had to bring him back to reality and remind him of his place." Katherine retorted and said in a justified tone as if she was doing a good deed.

No one came to my defense which was expected. This was a power means everything world. Being weak was the biggest sin one could make and something that would be answered with only one thing...Death.

"But I am impressed," Taze complimented as turned his head back towards me, "For you to take a soul attack from a Peak B-Grade Esper and still be on your feet is nothing short of astonishing. You sure you're not the bastard of some major family or megacorporate CEO?" He asked.

"If I was do you think I would be in the criminal underworld?" I asked rhetorically.

Taze laughed, "No, I guess not," He said and began walking towards the entrance of the building, "Well, I'll see you later Katherine. Try not to get yourself in trouble in the future ok? Your father can't protect you from everything." He warned as he vanished through the revolving door.
